Consent Checklist

Does your consent experience achieve the following qualities?

• Gives the user time to decide.
• Doesn’t interrupt a flow or task.  
• Asks at a relevant time.
• Tells the user exactly what they are consenting to. No black box!
• Fashionably structures text into bite-sized pieces. No 20 minute reads!
• Uses language that empowers the user.
• Uses visuals to reinforce the text.
• Is clear about how the data will be used and by whom.
• Only gathers information that it has permission to use. Does not ‘pile on’ data collection without user consent.
• Neutralizes ‘yes’ and ‘no’. A neutral consent experience approaches frictionless UI patterns with caution. It does not try to influence the user’s choice.
• Offers choice. Give the user the ability to choose which data to share or for how long (as applicable).
• Gives an option to opt out at any time.
• Fits naturally into the app experience.
