- Allow others to join games. Be honest, play fairly, and take turns.
- Stop play if someone is injured, and notify the nearest adult. If you cause someone to fall down, you stop, check on them, and apologize!
- Comments to others should be positive and encouraging. We do not allow trash-talking, name-calling, or put-downs.
- Disagreements are resolved by a vote of all participating players.
- Chase or tag games are only allowed on the ground - not on the playground equipment.
- No playing behind the pavilion or near the baseball fields/ bleachers.
- Do not climb on fences, posts, or trees.
- Sticks, branches, rocks, and mulch stay on the ground.
- Living creatures are not toys - Give critters personal space.
- Lunch food stays in the cafeteria. Do not bring lunch food outside.
- Lunch recess conflicts get solved during lunch recess time - not back in the classroom.
- Report unsafe or inappropriate behavior to the recess adults right away. If it is important enough to report, it is important enough to stop playing and report immediately.
AGE RESTRICTIONS
- Kindergarten students stay on the Blue (North) Playground, unless the weather indicates the need for “Blacktop Only.” No balls for Kindergarten recesses.
- First grade students are allowed full access to the playground and to use the recess balls, but they are not allowed to use the Gaga Pit.
PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT
- Recess balls should stay out of the mulch areas.
- No climbing, sitting, or standing on top of railings/bars. One person on bars at a time.

- No twisting, jumping from, running under, or standing on swings.
SOCCER
- Players need to create fair teams to begin the game. Take reasonable turns playing goalie.
- No climbing or hanging on soccer nets or poles, and no digging in the sand.
- There is no ‘fouling’ people on purpose. Soccer at school is a no-contact sport.
- No tackling, slide tackling, or tripping other players. Bodies should stay upright off the ground. Repeated warnings to play safely will lead to loss of play privileges.
- No using hands (except by goalie or for throw-ins) while playing soccer.
FOOTBALL
- Players need to create fair teams to begin the game. Take reasonable turns playing quarterback.
- No tackling, slide tackling, or tripping other players – “two-hand touch” only. Bodies should stay upright off the ground. Repeated warnings to play safely will lead to loss of play privileges.
GAGA BALL
- Only 10 students inside the Gaga Pit at a time. The rest of the students wait in line outside the entrance.
- Players hit the ball with one open hand.
- Players are only allowed to hit the ball one time until it hits the wall or another player.
- If the ball hits a person below the knee, even off another person or the wall, that person is out.
- Players are also out if they scoop, kick, or throw the ball, hit the ball with 2 hands, or hit the ball out of the pit.
TUMBLING & GYMNASTICS
- Students should not be lifting other students off the ground for any reason.
- Adults can use their discretion to decide if individual tumbling (somersaults, cartwheels, round-offs, etc.) feels safe given the setting, age, and ability of the students.
KICKBALL
- Players need to create fair teams to begin the game. Take reasonable turns being the pitcher.
- Each team will keep the same “kicking order” for the whole game. Students joining the game will be added to the end of the order.
- If the ball is kicked and rolls out of bounds before going past first or third base, it is called a foul and the kicker must try again.
- Teams switch sides after three outs or nine runs are scored.
- Older students (grades 3-5) are allowed to throw the ball at a runner below the shoulders in order to get that player out. A throw that hits above the shoulders is not an out and results in an extra base for that runner.
- No tackling, pushing, or tripping other players. Bodies should stay upright off the ground. Repeated warnings to play safely will lead to loss of play privileges.
BASKETBALL
- Players need to create fair teams to begin the game.
- There is no ‘fouling’ people on purpose. Basketball at school is a no-contact sport.
- No tackling, pushing, or tripping other players. Bodies should stay upright off the ground. Repeated warnings to play safely will lead to loss of play privileges.
FOUR SQUARE
- One player starts in each square, and the other players wait in line off to the side.
- Play begins when the server drops the ball once into her/his square then hits it into a different square.
- Each player needs to hit the ball with any part of his/her hand into an opposing player’s square after it has bounced only once in their his/her square.
- If the ball lands on a line, or goes out of bounds before it bounces, the player who hit the ball is out. If a player catches or holds the ball, or the ball bounces in their square more than once, that player is out.
