When the pouakai lived, people were terrified of it because it would take men, women and children for food for itself.

The pouakai lived on the top of mount torlesse and would swoop to catch its prey from above.

One day a brave man called Hotere came to the village to see that men and women were petrified from the pouakai. So Hotere decided he would capcher the papatios bird. He immediately knew what to do. But he needed some help. So he went to the townspeople when the pouakai was feeding, and asked them if he could borrow 50 of their bravest men.

One day, at the foot of dawn he went with the 50 men to the foot of the mountain were there was a shallow pool, 60 feet in diameter which he covered in a network of manuka saplings. Next he put the 50 men under the network of manuka saplings, and then he had to luer the pouakai the the network of saplings. The pouakai got stuck and the 50 men stabbed the pouakai.
