MAURICE RIVER TOWNSHIP SCHOOL DISTRICT

3rd – 8th GRADE BEHAVIOR/DISCIPLINE POLICY

ADMINISTRATIVE GUIDELINES

Before teachers request administrative intervention to deal with a student’s behavior they must first use a classroom discipline policy, unless a major rule is violated that disrupts learning or endangers other students. Each classroom policy should include techniques such as: informal warnings, talks with students away from the class, moving seats, contact with a parent/guardian (phone, email, text, etc.). Teachers must contact a parent/guardian before referring a student to the administration, except for major infractions. Teachers should keep a record of student infractions and parent contact.

Steps for Completing a Formal Warning:

Detention:  Teachers may choose to issue detentions as part of their classroom behavior management system.  The teacher must write-up the student in Oncourse, mention the occurrence rate of the behavior, and contact the parent that they are receiving a detention. Referrals directed towards administration may also warrant detentions issued by administration.  These detentions will be held with the administration or behavior management personnel, depending on the person assigning the detention, at the school either during lunch or after school. When possible, detentions shall be held in a behavior room with a limited number of students. Administration will contact the caregivers when appropriate.

Admin/Student Conference:  The student will meet with administration to discuss their behavior. The teacher will write-up the student (in Oncourse) and describe the event.

Parent Conference:  Parents should come into the school and have a conference with the teacher and/or administration.

Repeated Violations or Major Infractions:  When a student demonstrates a consistent ongoing pattern of behavior resistant to interventions provided by faculty and administration or commits a major infraction (major infractions will be immediately referred to the disciplinarian) such as: bring drugs/alcohol/weapons into the school, fighting, bullying, vandalism, skipping class, threatening other student, etc. the administration will hold a meeting with the student’s current teachers. The meeting will discuss strategies to correct the student’s behavior such as removing the student from all or limited afterschool activities, dances, field trips, assemblies, concerts, graduation, sporting events, other school functions, etc.(out-of-school suspension will also be considered for current or future infractions)

Students with IEP’s:  If a student has an IEP, based on behavior, the administration may choose to use the chart above combined with the behavior plan stated in their IEP.
