This Week We…

Math: Continue modeling division and multiplication using a variety of methods.  Solve word problems using the break apart method.

ELA:
 In Fundations, we learned the cursive up/down letters u and w and finished Unit 2.

In Wit and Wisdom,  we identified the main idea and essential meaning of Ocean Sunlight.  We read a new biography picture book:  The Fantastic Undersea Life of  Jacques Cousteau.  Students asked questions about key details, identified how an author groups related information together and why it is important, explained the sequence of the text and illustrations.

Science/ Social Studies: learned about goods/services, supply/demand, surplus/shortage, and entrepreneurship.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL): we discussed focussing and using self-talk.

Next Week We Will…

Math: We will begin Module 2 in math which focuses on place value concepts. Our first focus will be rounding to the nearest ten and hundred.

ELA:

In Fundations, we will begin Unit 3.  Unit 3 is a review of vowel-consonant-e syllable

and the reading and spelling procedures for two-syllable words.

In Wit and Wisdom, we will continue exploring our biography about Jacques Cousteau. Students will work to explain how quotations add meaning to the text, how an author uses illustrations, distinguish the literal and nonliteral meaning of words and phrases (personification and metaphors), identify the main idea and essential meaning, and explain the purpose of the simple past tense and use the simple past tense correctly.

Science/ Social Studies: create a good to be sold at our classroom marketplace. We will wrap up the unit with a mock market.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL): October is Dyslexia awareness month. Dyslexia affects up to 1 in 5 people, but the experience of dyslexia isn't always the same. This week we will read Brilliant Bea by Mary Vukadinovich, and discuss how everyone’s brain and experience with learning is different. Older students will learn more about Dyslexia with The Dr. Binocs show, and adults can learn more from this Ted Ed video.
