** Habakkuk visualized the power of God
• Habakkuk's prayer probably came from a vision of the supernatural
Habakkuk 3:2-6 NIV
Lord, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, Lord. Repeat them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy. [3] God came from Teman, the Holy One from Mount Paran. His glory covered the heavens and his praise filled the earth. [4] His splendor was like the sunrise; rays flashed from his hand, where his power was hidden. [5] Plague went before him; pestilence followed his steps. [6] He stood, and shook the earth; he looked, and made the nations tremble. The ancient mountains crumbled and the age-old hills collapsed---but he marches on forever.
• God cannot be stopped
• Non-believers will be overcome with fear when they see this power
Joshua 2:8-11 NIV
Before the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roof [9] and said to them, “I know that the Lord has given you this land and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. [10] We have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed. [11] When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below.
** Power of God gives us a message of hope because God will judge and deliver us and have victory over evil; pray that God show us His love and power around us now in our lives here on earth
Habakkuk 3:16,18-19 NIV
I heard and my heart pounded, my lips quivered at the sound; decay crept into my bones, and my legs trembled. Yet I will wait patiently for the day of calamity to come on the nation invading us. [18] yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior. [19] The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights. For the director of music. On my stringed instruments.
** What should hinder him who sees God as his Heavenly Father, and believes that all events proceed from His hand, and are managed by His wisdom, and are prompted by His love.
We have perfect confidence in God's wisdom and in His love. We only do Him the justice which we would expect from our own children, when we believe that He does not afflict us willingly, nor unnecessarily grieve His redeemed children, nor ever chastens us but in love.
His was a noble saying who, when his crops were rotting in flooded fields, and poverty stared at him from the scowling heavens, and other men cursed the weather; on being asked his reason for saying that it pleased him, replied, "It pleases God to send it, and whatever pleases Him pleases me." We are ready to envy a man whose faith could triumph over such great misfortunes.
Yet why should we not lie as calmly in the arms of God's providence, as we lay in infancy on our mother's bosom? Having an ever-living, an ever-lasting, an ever-loving father in God — how may we welcome all of His providences! <G75>
Ecclesiastes 7:14 NIV
[14] When times are good, be happy; but when times are bad, consider this: God has made the one as well as the other. Therefore, no one can discover anything about their future.
Habakkuk 3:17-18 NIV
[17] Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, [18] yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.
Job 1:21 NIV
[21] and said: “Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.”
Job 2:10 NIV
[10] He replied, “You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?” In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.
1 Samuel 3:18 NIV
[18] So Samuel told him everything, hiding nothing from him. Then Eli said, “He is the Lord; let him do what is good in his eyes.”
Matthew 26:39 NIV
[39] Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”
** The presence of a friend in trouble is cheering and consoling. but it is too often the case that our friends, like the friends of Job, prove to be miserable comforters. They do not enter into our troubles or they can not help us. The advice they give at times only aggravates our woe and adds to our distress.
Appearances may be very dark; the night may seem very long; and your pains, weakness, and fears may be many and great. But, believer, your God says, "Do not be afraid, for I am with you!" What a thought is this!
Isaiah 43:5a NIV
[5] Do not be afraid, for I am with you
Habakkuk 3:17-18 NIV
[17] Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, [18] yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.
The great, glorious, omnipotent Jehovah promises to be with me to:
• Help me
• Comfort me
• Sanctify me
• Save me
• Hold communion with me
• Listen to my sighs
• Number my tears
• Secure me from all injury
He is also with me:
• As a kind benignant Father
• In every place, in every trouble, in every conflict
• On the bed of sickness
• Through all my journey and for evermore <S183>
Isaiah 43:1b-3a NIV
[1] Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. [2] When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. [3] For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior
** Difficulty is part of life; we have a choice whether to accept it or not
• Habakkuk was terrified of the Babylonians
• In human terms there was no way out, no solution
• All Habakkuk had was God's promise of deliverance, so he was left with a choice to trust or not
• Habakkuk knew and trusted that God is love and cannot be stopped; he chose to wait for God to judge the Babylonians <C31>
Habakkuk 3:16 NIV
[16] I heard and my heart pounded, my lips quivered at the sound; decay crept into my bones, and my legs trembled. Yet I will wait patiently for the day of calamity to come on the nation invading us.
** Despite the difficult circumstances, Habakkuk chose to be at peace and rejoice
• His focus was on God not the circumstances
• When we focus on a problem, it magnifies it and we don't see God at work around us
• Habakkuk could lose everything and still be at peace because he rested on God’s promises <C31>
** Trusting in God allows us to live on the heights
• Like a mountain goat can cling to surfaces beyond our reason, so we can stand sure-footed in God
• See God as the source of wisdom and strength
• God tests us so WE find out how we can be confident in Him <C31>
Habakkuk 3:19 NIV
[19] The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights. For the director of music. On my stringed instruments.
** God uses difficult situations to get us to focus on Him and show His care/provision for us
Habakkuk 3:17-19 NIV
Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, [18] yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior. [19] The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights. For the director of music. On my stringed instruments.
** Doubting God and not believing He is with us will destroy our thankfulness; it’s easy to thank God during the good times but we need to remember to thank Him during the difficult times
Romans 8:28-29 NIV
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. [29] For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.
** What should hinder him who sees God as his Heavenly Father, and believes that all events proceed from His hand, and are managed by His wisdom, and are prompted by His love — from kissing the rod, and saying, "My Father, not my will, but may Your will be done." I say, what should hinder him from taking the agonizing cup and draining it to the bitterest dregs.
We have perfect confidence in God's wisdom and in His love. We only do Him the justice which we would expect from our own children, when we believe that He does not afflict us willingly, nor unnecessarily grieve His redeemed children, nor ever chastens us but in love.
