HIGHLAND PARK

2017-18  School Year

Math 6/7

Welcome to the 2017-18 school year at Highland Park and Ms. Croswell’s Math 6/7 class.  I hope you find this class syllabus helpful in understanding what we will be learning and how we will communicate your child’s progress.  I have also included behavioral expectations, information about ParentVue and other online resources, as well as a brief summary of our class format and homework policy.

Academic Learning Targets for 6th grade accelerated math:  Learning Targets have been developed for every class for the 6th, 7th  and 8th grades. Targets are intended to clearly identify and align the expected learning.  These targets are consistent across all eight of the Beaverton middle schools.

1)    Communicates clearly and explains my reasoning so others can follow how a problem is solved.

2)    Reasons mathematically to solve problems in real-life context.

3)    Recognizes patterns and describes them as relationships or general rules.

4)    Uses ratio concepts and ratio reasoning to solve problems.

5)    Computes, applies and extends previous understandings of rational numbers fluently.

6)    Applies and reasons algebraically using expressions, one-variable equations and inequalities.

7)    Solves mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume.

8)    Develops understanding of statistical variability, summarizes & describes distributions, & investigates probability.

9)    Analyzes proportional relationships & uses them to solve real-world and mathematical problems.

10) Applies and extends previous understandings of operations with fractions.

Assessments:  We will assess student progress on the learning targets and provide feedback to students on what must be done to improve their proficiency or mastery of the learning. We will return to targets throughout the year and will be looking for year-long growth.

Explanation of Learning Target Marks (All Assessments will be on a 4 point scale):

4 = Highly Proficient, 3 = Proficient, 2 = Nearing Proficiency, 1 = Working Toward Proficiency

                                        * = Not Assessed this marking period

Personal Management / Behavior Learning Targets:  All Beaverton middle school students will be assessed on how students can:  manage responsibilities, self-direct learning, and communicate and work effectively within a team or group.   Behavioral Learning Target Marks will be reported separately from academic learning targets using the following marks:

C/I = Consistently/Independently,  G   = Generally,  R   = Rarely/Sometimes (Needs Improvement)

ParentVue: ParentVue is a web portal that allows parents and guardians to access real-time information related to their students. Students can access this information too in StudentVue. Parents/guardians can view their child’s attendance, schedules, and scores in grade book, report card, school information, emergency contacts and other information. Instructions about how to use ParentVue can be found at: https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/PS/Pages/parentvue_studentvue.aspx

Other Resources: Homework will be posted on Canvas. However, the student planners should be the primary tool for students to use in keeping track of their assigned homework. The planner should be kept in the binder.

Class Format: We will focus on problem solving and explaining our work. Mathematicians need to communicate their understandings to others, using words, pictures & symbols.  There are many ways to solve a problem. While getting the right answer is important, we will also talk about the way students solved the problem. In-class work will be done in a spiral notebook and their toolkit.  If students are ever stuck on homework, their notebook and toolkit should be the first places they look.  There will be multiple assessments for every learning target. Most learning targets are assessed throughout the year.  Students will need to come to class prepared with the following equipment: math textbook or Chromebook, math toolkit, math spiral, planner, pencil, and homework.

Homework Policy: Homework should be legible on loose-leaf paper or worksheet with proper headings and all work shown. Late homework will only be accepted for credit by the Monday after it was due.  Expect homework every night!  If students spend 30 minutes really working on the assignment and have not completed it, they will ask a parent or guardian to sign the homework and they will receive full credit for what they completed. Absent students are responsible to make up any work missed.  They will have about the same number of days that they were absent to make up the work.

Online Resources:  We are using CPM (College Preparatory Math) this year.  Students have access to the e-book and will be using that for homework and in-class work.  CPM has a link for Parent Support ( cpm.org/parent-support/ ).  Here you will find Additional Support, Parent Tips and Homework Help.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me.  I look forward to a great school year with your student!

District Goal:  WE empower all students to achieve post-high school success.
