The World Masters Orienteering Championships will be held 2.-9.8.2024 in Turku, Sauvo and Rymättylä.
World Championship medals are contested in the women's and men's 35-95 age groups. More than 4200 competitors from 42 countries will participate in the World Championship. The most distant orienteers come from New Zealand, Australia and Brazil. There are 1850 Finnish competitors.
This is the biggest Veterans World Cup in its history. The largest number of participants is in the men's 65-year-old category, where there are nearly 420 competitors. More than a hundred men and women over the age of 85 are also vying for World Championship medals. The oldest of them is Sole Nieminen from Jämsä's Retkiveikko, who orienteering in the women's 95 series.
The qualifying competition for sprint orienteering will take place in Turku around the Paavo Nurmi Stadium on 3.8. and the sprint final in the vicinity of the Cathedral on 4.8.
Middle distance qualifying 6.8. and the final on 7.8. will be navigated in the terrain of Sauvo. The competition week culminates on the open cliffs of Rymättylä on 9.8., where the medals of the World Long Distance Championships will be contested.
A total of about 65,000 maps have been printed for the competitors. Half of these will be used as race maps and half will be distributed to participants after the race as a keepsake. The maps used in the competition are collected from the orienteers after the race, so that the race tracks remain secret until everyone is in the terrain.
During the World Veterans Championships, there will also be a Fin5 public competition. The public competition will be contested in the women's and men's categories between the ages of 8 and 21. During the week, there are more than 700 competitors from 28 different countries.
The event is organised by volunteers and a total of 570 volunteers participate. The organisers are Turun Suunnistajat, Paimion Rasti, Liedon Parma and Mynämäen Suunnistajat -52. The City of Turku, the Finnish Orienteering Federation and the International Orienteering Federation IOF are also involved in the cooperation.
