November 18, 2025
Portola Valley, CA — The Portola Valley School District (PVSD) is pleased to announce the provisional appointment of R. Kang-Xing (“KX”) Jin to the PVSD Governing Board, following a thorough public interview and selection process. Jin will fill the board vacancy created by the seat left vacant by the resignation of Amod Setlur, and will immediately begin serving in this role, completing the remaining year of Setlur’s term.
Jin, a longtime district parent and active community member, brings a deep commitment to public education, strong governance experience, and extensive expertise in technology and organizational leadership. A graduate of Harvard University with a degree in Computer Science, Jin has spent his career at the intersection of technology, innovation, and public service. He previously served in multiple leadership roles at Meta from 2006–2023, including as an Engineering Vice President and as the company’s Head of Health. He now works as a consultant in technology and business strategy.
In addition to his professional experience, Jin has been an active contributor to both local and national organizations. He serves on the boards of Civic News Company and Rebuild Local News, and is an advisory board member for the Stanford Center for Digital Health. Within PVSD, Jin currently volunteers on the AI Task Force, supporting the district’s efforts to integrate technology and artificial intelligence in effective, student-centered ways.
In his application and public statement, Jin expressed a strong desire to contribute to the district’s ongoing work in teaching and learning, governance, technology integration, communication, wellness, and safety. He emphasized the importance of supporting the district’s Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) goals; helping PVSD leverage the benefits of new technologies while mitigating risks; strengthening academic programs such as the Science of Reading initiative and the CA Math Framework; and maintaining transparent, thoughtful governance practices that keep student learning at the center.
As a parent of two PVSD students, Jin highlighted his gratitude for the district’s strengths and his desire to help sustain excellence while navigating change. “We are fortunate to be a part of PVSD, and I would be honored to help support it,” he wrote in his personal statement.
PVSD Board President Aimee Armsby and Superintendent Roberta Zarea welcome Jin to the Governing Board and appreciate his willingness to serve the community. His appointment will remain provisional for a 30-day period, as required by law.
