 Presentation Outline-

Eyes in the Field – Participatory science as an essential activity in conservation research

Why Document?

In short: To protect insects we need to know about them.

Reality? Abysmal data gaps at all levels.

Action! EwA is doing its share of work.

Reminder: Science, therefore participatory science, has to be intentional, methodical, accessible, and usable!

⚠️ Caution! Beware of questionable citizen science projects.

EwA's model goes beyond contributing data to existing projects in that the community also co-creates opportunities and initiates projects when necessary. The data collected directly serves EwA's conservation projects and local and national scientific efforts. The result is a rich place-based natural history that helps understand the impact of land use and climate on urban natural habitats. This type of grassroots natural history community brings a new voice to the conservation world, one uniquely positioned to advocate on behalf of local ecosystems and complement the viewpoints of professional and governmental science.

In 2022, we were busy increasing our data inventories and strengthening the quality of our records.

All studies saw an increase in the number of observations.

Quality standards are important to maximize data usability for science and conservation management. We strongly encourage complete observation sets to increase our crowd-sourced identification rate and strengthen the impact of our records. EwA developed a rich set of iNaturalist observation fields to create annotated datasets that support interaction network studies (including our own). In 2022, this enabled the documentation of more than 9,643 plant associations, 4,134 arthropod signs (phenology indicators), and 3,482 behavior indicators.
