SOME
- Use some in affirmative sentences.
Examples:
- I have some pets.(pets is countable)
- I'd like some coffee. (coffee is uncountable)
ANY
- Use any in negative and interrogative sentences.
Examples:
- He hasn't got any water.
- He hasn't got any relatives in Chicago.
- Have you got any sugar? (sugar is uncountable)
- Have you got any pencils? (pencils is countable)
EXCEPTIONS
- Use some in questions when offering or requesting something or when you expect the answer to be ‘yes’.
Examples:
- Would you like some juice? (offer)
- Can I have some lemonade, please? (request)
- Use any in a positive sentence to mean 'it's not important which one'.
Examples:
- You can take any train.
- Pass me any spoon.
- Come over any Saturday.
- Use any in positive sentences that have a negative feeling, for example if they include never, hardly, without:
- My parents never buy any fruit.
- We hardly have any friends in Brighton.
- Jane came without any money.
