On the tight Moynalvey pitch the spectators were treated to a fine competitive first half with no quarter asked or given as players regularly took the ball into contact or tried to play out of tight spaces which inevitably led to the concession of frees and the referee saw fit to brandish five yellow cards as both sets of players got stuck in. The home side had the better of the first half exchanges and led by 1 06 to 0 06 at the interval. Moynalvey were winning most of the breaks, soaking up any pressure and were very dangerous from quick counter attacks. By the 10th minute they led by 2, their second point being a good goal chance. Tones gradually got to grips with the game and the sides were level on 0 04 each after 23 minutes, Diamond, Blaney, Laochra O Fionnagain and O Kelly Lynch all pointing for the Tones. However 1 02 from the home side shortly afterwards gave them some breathing space and they seemed set to carry this lead to the interval. However two Cian Ward points in injury time narrowed the gap and Tones finished the half with a spring in their step.
The tightness of the first half didn’t prepare us for the scoring spree which was to come. By the 35th minute Tones had added three points, Cian Ward, Thomas Blaney and Sarán O Fionnagáin all finding the target but they had conceded 1 01 to leave the score Tones 0 09 Moynalvey 2 07. However Padraic Diamond scored two goals in as many minutes and Tones now led 2 09 to 2 07 and were ahead for the first time in the game. Diamond’s first came as he seized the rebound from a Cian o Neill goal effort which had come off the keeper. Tones built on this lead with 1 01 from Cian Ward. The goal came from a defensive error as Saran o Fionnagáin gathered a short kick out and fed Ward who clinically finished. Moynalvey were quick to respond and hit a goal within a minute followed by a point. Four goals in four minutes, this was anyone’s game. Tones 3 10 Moynalvey 3 08, forty one minutes played. However a scoring surge of 1 07,(Conor Sheppard, Cian Ward (5), Caolan Ward and O Kelly Lynch (goal) without reply saw Tones build an unassailable lead by the 25th minute, 4 17 to 3 08. Moynalvey did score a consolation goal before Robert White and Alan Callaghan closed out the scoring for the Tones.
