Disabled People Against Cuts Cymru (DPAC Cymru) in the press
Swansea - Cardiff & Valleys - North Wales
This is a partial list of DPAC Cymru press coverage. We haven’t got copies of everything e.g. we are missing out appearances on BBC Radio Wales, LBC radio, That’s TV, etc.
Aside: in most cases, the editor picks the title of the letter. Sometimes it isn’t what we would have chosen.
Accessibility: this document contains scans and screenshots that won’t be suitable for screen readers. Online editions are provided in some cases - in others, the original plain-text press release is available and linked to instead.

The PCS Wales leadership “has now been instructed to campaign against future cuts alongside campaign group DPAC Cymru, work to improve workplace services and support for disabled people, support demands for an independent review of the Personal Independence Pay[ment], and pressure the incoming Senedd to tackle poverty among disabled people in Wales.”

Swansea councillors will vote today on a package of more than £12 million of cuts, but campaigners have called for them to rebel, warning the council is completely unprepared for the pressures it will soon face from disability cuts.
Ben Golightly, a coordinator for Disabled People Against Cuts Cymru (DPAC Cymru), will say today that “despite our warnings to the council over the pressures it will face, Swansea council shockingly admits it has made ‘no provision’ for any increased costs or reductions in income arising from disability cuts. The council is in for a shock when in April, people newly unable to work through disability will be more than £200/month worse off than disabled people today.”
The group will ask the councillors to “rebuke the UK Government for its disability cuts, voted for by 25 out of 26 Welsh Labour MPs, and call for the funding at all levels - council, Welsh Government, and UK Government - for a needs budget to end what the UN calls the continuing ‘grave or systematic violations of the rights of disabled people’ in the UK”
Swansea Trades Council says it is calling on councillors to set a “legal, no-cuts, needs budget that is formally ‘balanced’ by the use of prudential borrowing powers and reserves, in order to build time for a mass campaign for adequate government funding, while still maintaining the functioning of the council.”

Trade unionists in Wales discuss workers’ political representation
The UK disability minister, Sir Stephen Timms, has faced criticism after declining a meeting with the Senedd cross-party group on disability, who had raised concerns about failures to consult disabled people over recent welfare changes.
Campaigners say Timms’ refusal adds weight to calls for the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) review to be run independently and led by disabled people, a position supported by members across the Welsh parliament.

“
At the last meeting of the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) all-Britain steering committee we discussed a letter from Swansea Disabled People Against the Cuts (DPAC). They have been campaigning to get their local Labour MPs to publicly debate their position on the proposed cuts to disability and other welfare benefits. There is supposed to be a ‘public consultation’ on the plans, so why not tell the public what they think?
It was agreed to fully support their initiative and encourage similar campaigns elsewhere to also put Labour MPs on the spot before a parliamentary vote.

The statement reads: Torsten Bell is, yet again, publicly insulting us and calling us liars. When will he sit down with us, in front of a journalist and the public, and have a proper discussion? Our open letter backing our call for a fair and respectful public debate has been signed by more than 250 individuals and organisations, including a national Labour-affiliated trade union. Unlike Torsten, we are not interested in trading personal insults on social media. We want to debate his policies. We want to defeat the disability benefit cuts and the flawed proposals that he and his government defend.
