Below is a list of important reminders and a short “PACK IT” list of essential items you might need for the ultimate Love Burn experience. While these lists are in no way exhaustive, or tailored to your specific needs, you may find them handy to use as general guidelines for what to pack and not forget! Please excuse (enjoy) any sarcasm. We are just trying to make this a little more fun.

Where & When
If you haven’t already; now is the time to request the time off! You’ll be spending the weekend of Thursday to Monday, February 16-20, 2023 at Historic Virginia Key Beach Park in Miami. For driving directions and site-map visit https://theloveburn.com/map/.

Volunteers
Seriously, this event only happens because YOU VOLUNTEER for the actual event (not just your camp). Go now to TheLoveBurn.com/volunteer and let's make it happen!
Safety and Masks
We want everyone to stay as safe and healthy as possible. Masks and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) are encouraged at all times. With the fun masquerade theme of the Carnavale: Masquerade of Fools, you can get super creative with your costumes and masks.
As an event that celebrates Radical Self-Reliance, you are welcome to research and share your findings with others in a positive, communicative format that lets everyone know you care and are here to share and help. If you have fun ideas for masks and PPE, share them in our group.
The event will be following CDC, State and City guidelines at the time of the event for Large Outdoor Gatherings. Rules and requirements are constantly changing at all these levels and there is no way for our volunteers or volunteer organizers to have a clear requirement at this moment since it may violate or change with future rules from the city, state or CDC level.
WHAT YOU WON’T WANT TO FORGET
Personalize your Items
Label any significant possessions (including BIKES, CAMERAS, BACKPACKS, jackets) with your name, phone number, email address, and for added perks, your camp location or staple, tape and/or pin a business card or paper with your information on it. We don't want your stuff. You want your stuff. LABEL EVERYTHING!!!

Depository of Useful Information That You Will Probably Forget by Sunset Your First Day at Love Burn.
So you did it. After years of saying you were going to go to a burn, or you have that fun friend who implored you to come because “omg it was amazing they had this thing and then we went to this other thing and holy shit you need to come”- you got a ticket. Good job! Buy the ticket, take the ride. You did the first part. I will describe the ride part below.
Hopefully this dead-tree guide (please print this out on fine, crisp linen resume paper, and bind it for safekeeping) will answer some of your questions through your laborious act of reading sentences, nodding your head when you understand, and sometimes exclaiming “Gosh be damned, now I know!”.
Pro tip: Eating an apple with a loud crunch while reading always makes the brain absorb facts. It’s a fact!
We are very happy that you are coming to your first (or ninth but never read the guide yet) Love Burn… no, really!
You may find that the online social media groups can be snarky and off-putting (you are 99.9998% correct) but trust me, every one of those bull snarks was a first-timer like you.
I know this, because I am old and was probably snarky to them online (100% correct) when they had that fresh, new burner smell themselves. Next year, with the proper training, you too can be a jerk online (I am kidding, don’t be a jerk…there is a difference between fun playful banter and being a jerk; but some never learn…). My point is, this is a fun community. We are the glorious failures, miscreants, misanthropes, black sheep, and flaming fireworks that your parents hoped you would never become (and yet, here you are…).
If you have any questions during the event, my advice is look for poorly-dressed older burners with a limp, and ask them questions. The limp is probably from something they learned the hard way, so you will benefit vicariously from their screw-ups. However, there is no excuse for being poorly dressed at a burn. No excuse at all. Fahshen, dahlin’....
It is best to cover the fluid questions first:
SHOWERS, TOILETS AND BIDETS (Sorry, no bidets)
There are showers and flush toilets. Individual stalls to boot. Open 24 hours. We also have many portapotties throughout the event. Please please please, keep these clean. You will find most burners can be really pissy and downright surly when people leave trash in the toilets, showers, and grounds.
The event is a Leave No Trace event.
We will get into that later. But for now, no cans, waste, garbage, ciggy butts, or anything else gets left behind in the bathrooms. Not even inside the toilet. It sounds cheesy, but rings true: “If it doesn’t come out of your body, don’t put it in the potty.” It is an easy thing to learn, and once you get into it, you will look at the “default world” as a very messy place in comparison.
BUGS?
It can be buggy so bring appropriate supplies. Usually, there is a fine tropical breeze that keeps the pesty critters away. However, sometimes there is no breeze, and they usually have a biting period right at dusk (which is 5-8pm).
WEATHER OR NOT
The weather is warm, pleasant, yet unpredictable (it is the sub-tropics) so we recommend bringing inclement weather gear, warm clothes and a swimsuit. Do we get rain? Yes, but not every year, and some years it is light, but one year, it was a deluge that had all of us walking around like wet cats for a day afterwards. So prepare.
DO I NEED A BIKE?
Bike is not necessary but encouraged. As Love Burn grows so does the area we occupy so be radically self-reliant and bring your bike or put your feet to work! Light it up and lock it to a permanent structure when you leave it. Do not lock it to an art car or art structure unless you don’t want it back or dragged to a different location.
HOW DO I GET ICE?
Ice is the only vending allowed at Love Burn. Ice sales typically happen from 11:45am-7pm, Bring cash.. CASH ONLY (A lot of us are still stuck in the 90s…sorry, no Venmo, Apple Pay, AssCash or GrassCash…just dollars and sense). $5 per 7lb bag. No, there is no delivery of ice to your tent or camp (Radical self reliance is what we are looking for!)
From time to time volunteers for ice will be transporting ice from location to location… if at any point you spot the ice cart they WILL be able to provide ice for you BUT, we will NOT be doing any specific deliveries for any specific person/theme camp (Unless you are really really nice and persuade us when we’re NOT busy) There will be 4 locations around Love Burn you will be able to acquire this lovely water nugget and they are: Commissary, front gate, somewhere close around the burn site, and in the back 40 before the bridge to enter Love Burn.
Pro tip: Bring a collapsible grocery cart or something small with wheels for your ice bags…
IS THERE POWER AVAILABLE?
There will be power onsite, however you must share between camps. RV’s CANNOT plug into the power grid. Try not to be a power-hungry energy vampire at the spider box hookup. There is enough to go around. Share with your neighbors. Bring good power cables, thick ones, not lamp cords. Ask your blowhard friend with the moustache to tell you what power cables to bring for power. I am sure he will talk for hours about thickness and length and throughput. Sounds sexy…but it is not. It is ok. Listen to him. He is lonely, BECAUSE of the moustache.
VENDING
There is NO VENDING at this event. If you are found selling your art, bracelets, necklaces, homemade jelly, books, shirts, juice, blood, first-born naming rights or whatever, you will be asked to leave the event. This is NOT a vending event. Please do not ask to vend. We are a gifting culture. Not barter. The difference is gifting without an expectation of receiving. Much like nookie work: if you sell it or trade, it is a crime, but if you give it away, no crime.
BRING ALL THE THINGS!
Radical self-reliance is a key principle to making this event an ongoing success. You should bring everything you need for the length of time you intend to stay. You should bring your sleeping quarters, ID, clothing, costumes, medicine, everything you need and all the food and beverages you need to take care of yourself and those you bring with you, especially your children. Try to put your ID on everything you bring. This does not work for me, as I put “Basura” on my things, and in Miami, my things get thrown out.
Pro tip: Take a photo of you holding a sign that has your camp name and your nickname. Make that your start-up screen on your phone. When you lose it (we get over a hundred a year at Lost and Found), we can quickly get it to you. Don’t make a sign with just your phone number on it. We can’t call you on that lost phone. Funny, but true. Just your face and camp name. You will be reunited.
BRING A CUP! BRING A PLATE!
Lots of camps will be delighted to gift you a fine, tasty beverage, but you need a cup. Not having a cup means a disposable receptacle, which is fancy-pants for trash. No garbage, no trace, no problem!
Here is a sample list I keep on my fridge to remind myself as I am packing for Love Burn every year:
Three (3) small bottles of model glue (with masks if possible)
Two hundred mg (200mg) of expired St. Joseph children’s aspirin- the good shit
Two (2) 8 oz tubes of KY Jelly (the one with the heat and motion effect)
A case of Jameson's Irish Whiskey (to be used as an antiseptic for cuts)
5 pairs of snowshoes, to pass out if necessary
A 5 watt green laser diode with a built-in heat sink
16 pairs of stockings (tights), black if possible
A shortwave radio that picks up old Soviet bloc radio
The 1987 issue of Playboy with LaToya Jackson on the cover
A ball-gag with a red ball (not too large, the one with the velcro, not the snaps)
Three (3) boxes of blueberry Pop-Tarts
A cassette tape of Bananarama’s “Cruel Summer”
Lots of Sysco detergent
2 Polaroid cameras with film
A bicycle chain (see lube above)
You get the idea….bring the things you need, and some extra but only what you want to take home with you too.
Now I am sure you may have other, detailed questions. Some of them may never get answered, even after years of attendance. I still have many, many questions, and here I am, writing an answer guide.
We have a Facebook group Love Burn that has a huge FAQ section.

EARLY ENTRY
There is NO early entry into the burn except for event volunteers and build crew that are explicitly authorized. If your name is not on the early-entry list, you will be denied entry.

Once you have your wristband and any passes, head to a Placement Concierge (also at check-in). They will answer any questions you have, make sure you are prepared for placement, and provide guidance on how to proceed based on your exact needs.
EVENT CHECK-IN
Check-in is located at the Arthur Lamb Jr. Rd. Look for road signage directing you to the correct lane for Check In.
RE-ENTRY PROCESS
If you had to leave the burn for some reason, you do not need to return to check-in, but may go directly to a gate wearing your official wristband. If you LOST it: Be sure to inform QuarterMasters Headquarters on your way leaving the event. If your item(s) are unable to be located, then you will have to fill out a lost & found form. We will try to list it on the Phone App, so notify someone asap.
QuarterMaster Station will host a Lost and Found box. Items that are not picked up during the event, will be sorted and held by a volunteer for a reasonable amount of time. If you need an item shipped to you, you will have to pay postage and handling before it is sent to you.
If you FOUND it: Be sure to bring any lost (or found) items to Quartermaster who will host a Lost and Found box; you may also give it to a Ranger on Duty. Bring any found phones, coats, items, etc. to Quartermaster or give to a Ranger on Duty. Theme Camps will also have Lost and Found items. General Placement FAQs + Answers
Theme Camp FAQs + Answers
Q: My camp plans on hosting clothing optional events, does that affect placement?
A: Yes, the back half of the burn is a clothing optional zone (as decided by the Virginia Key park officials) and therefore your camp will not be placed in the front field. Zones 5, 6 and 11 are clothing optional in 2024.
Q: My theme camp requested a certain spot, I’ll definitely get said spot right?
A: We try to honor everyone’s wishes to be placed at the location of their choosing however due to size restrictions, environmentally protected areas and ground clearance you will be placed in a spot that fits your camp needs. There are very few spots where multiple RVs are able to setup camp.
Q: I submitted my theme camp application but things have changed, what should I do?
A: Please, please, please update your application if anything changes: size, number of people, art projections, RVs, etc. Failure to update your application could result in disproportionate camp size or other camp issues.
Open Camping FAQs + Answers
Q: I’m not part of a theme camp, where do I camp?
A: Placement for open camping starts Thursday and is available on a first come, first serve basis. Open campers are not able to pick their location and will be placed by a placement volunteer. Open camping takes longer than theme camping because we have to find a space based on your camping situation: RV/tent/campers in vehicle, etc. If you plan on open camping your group needs to ARRIVE TOGETHER or we cannot guarantee placement together or near each other. Open campers cannot save spots for those coming later.
Department Leads: Robert H (Hatch), Joshua G (Foo)
Power requests are part of the theme camp and art grant applications.
Q: I heard love burn has a power grid, can I plug my RV in?
A: No, there are no RV hookups. We have a power grid however you will have to share with the camps around you, camps will not have a dedicated spider box.
Q: It has rained and now my power does not work. What do I do?
A: Check / reset the GFI outlet(s) which supply power to your Camp / Art Installation.
Q: I can not resolve my power problem, how can I receive additional help?
A: Find anyone with a radio then request they contact the Power Team for you. Please stay with that person until you have provided to the responding Power Team Rep your camp name, camp number, and person of contact. Please be advised that after significant weather events the power team may take some time to respond
