The Accelerated Online Degree Completion Initiative
In fall 2022, the University of Michigan-Flint launched its Accelerated Online Degree Completion initiative by offering returning adult students a clear pathway to obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Michigan. Since then, the program has grown to enroll 88 students in the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies program and another 65 students in the BBA program that just came online this fall. The 88 students in the BIS program do not include the nine students who completed their studies in August 2023.

The AODC initiative is gaining traction and will continue to attract students as the BS in Psychology becomes available in the AODC format next fall. While these enrollment statistics are significant, it is more important to remember that behind these numbers are real students whose lives have improved by being given this opportunity to complete their Bachelor’s degree.
The success of the AODC initiative is primarily due to the intentional design of the program – 7-week courses, multiple start dates, a “concierge” approach to advising and support, and the opportunity to earn academic credit for prior learning. The importance of these program features was reinforced by attending the annual meeting of the Council of Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) this past November. The collaboration with other institutions that support adult learners during the conference will result in new ways the AODC value proposition will be promoted, both internally and externally, and further expand the program offerings. These “best practices” were repeatedly emphasized as essential in supporting adult learners.
UM-Flint is clearly on a positive trajectory with its AODC programs as it serves adult learners across Michigan and beyond.
