In the 1960’s technology hadn’t been fully developed therefore ways of advertising and marketing proved to be more difficult than they are today. For this being the case producers had to make do with the very best that they had, during the making of the 1967 Jungle Book Disney advertised their new release to its target audience by designing and developing film posters which would be displayed throughout public places. Whereas due to technological advances the 2016 edition had the ability to advertise their film via online platforms as well as all the ways that the 1967 version did.Disney used the advanced technology to the best of their ability in the 2016 version of the jungle book to advertise it, some of the ways they used the technology was online games that people could do about the new jungle book eg such as, social media posts with the actors and their characters and online interviews of the actors in the jungle book to promote and advertise it more that way. Star marketing Through this people could see who was in the new Jungle Book making them ultimately want to go and see the new film, this pushed the advertisement of the new film further. The darker tone brought with live action in the 2016 version appealed more to the male demographic, they highlighted darker movies in the trailers such as “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Iron Man”, this attracted men more as the darker visuals and storyline lead to Favreau deciding to taking out the songs all together, consequently making the whole film a scarier version of the original. Hence, why they attempted to attract the male demographic as men typically like darker visuals, storylines and less light-hearted songs. In order to attract a wider and more sophisticated target audience than was initially targeted in 1967 which was largely under 10 year olds. Another key example of technology used in marketing was the virtual reality IMAX experience used to advertise the 2016 Jungle Book. This allowed fans to come and experience the brand new CGI jungle through Mowgli’s eyes. This built up anticipation for the live action remake as audiences could experience the brilliant technological advances for themselves before seeing the story. As the 2016 version used the same storyline as the original from 1967, technology was at the forefront of the marketing strategy. To this day Disney’s live action remake of the jungle book is one of the best marketed films of all time. To conclude technology wasn’t used that much to market and advertise the 1967 version of jungle book as the internet and social media wasn’t such a big thing at the time but instead did posters and what they had at the time to malt? and advertise and the 2016 version had the advantage of having new technology as they were able to offer different experiences with technology as they used CGI and VR to create a market and advertise the film, technology having a huge impact on how the film was advertised. Good start, but only three marketing examples in total. You need to include as many as you can, you’ve got live action, star marketing and IMAX but what else was used? Not enough for a 25 minute question.
Technology has changed production of films due to the advanced CGI on the live action animals and scenery, and the use of green and blue screens to place actors in scenes that have been created to add effect. CGI has had a major effect on films especially in the jungle book (2016), this is because they had to create the animals and make them life-like and seem natural in the way they move and do natural things for an animal. For example Compared to the 1967 version of the jungle book the film is a lot darker, this means the new jungle book is more popular and distributed.?
Especially, in the 2016 remake of the Jungle Book, fans were promised outstanding, ground-breaking visual effects. Keeping the same storyline however using a darker tone, consequent from the live action, Favreau focused a lot of time onto visuals. Developing ground-breaking CGI. Everything on screen apart from Neel Sethi (who played Mowgli) was CGI. From small puddles of water on the ground, blades of grass to the massive, truck like build of Sher Kahn. They did this by creating a skeleton of the animal in order to get the natural, animalistic movement they use, actors wearing green suits with spots on them wouldn’t have been the same, they couldn’t capture the movement without this. After creating the skeleton, they wrapped it with muscle and over lay this with fur. Good examples link to question.
The improvement of technology also allowed the 2016 version of the jungle book to be watched in a different way as you could watch it in 3d something you couldn’t do with the original, also enticing audiences to watch the film again to see it in a different away giving allowing Disney to make more money. You cou Complete. What other ways can you watch it now? All the technologies and platforms.
The technology used in the 1967 Jungle Book was just as ground-breaking for it’s time. The use of Multiplane cameras as well as Xerography had a huge impact on the film industry especially animation. Disney provided motion depth using the multiplane camera. The scenery was split into three layers, the foreground, middle ground and background. The foreground and middle ground were moved closer whilst the background remained still. This technology that was developed in 1938 was used up until 1989 when the Little Mermaid was released. Xerography allowed animators to not re draw each character and the scenery, making production faster. Great example.
In conclusion technology has had the biggest impact of anything on the film industry. Furthermore, films nowadays can be based purely around the technology they use to create them. Some of the most attractive propositions of films is the technology they use. For example, Avatar in 2009 did so well because it was ahead of its time and the CGI they used was ground breaking. And without the technology all the great stunts and explosions wouldn’t be possible, and a lot of films wouldn’t be as entertaining. Furthermore, technology had a massive impact on the live action remake of the jungle book as it wouldn’t be possible without it. The whole marketing campaign boasted the technology they used as they showed off how they brought the animals to life for the film. Ultimately, technologies impact on the film industry changed things for the better.
This question is also asking about distribution and circulation so another paragraph would need to be included (as well as the technology egs from q1) to discuss the marketing campaign as well as all the different ways the audiences are able to access the films nowadays.
Explain the importance of technological convergence for film industries and audiences.
Refer to The Jungle Book 1967 and The Jungle Book 2016in your answer.
(Rohan) Disney is a multi-million dollar conglomerate, in 1967 the Jungle Book had ground breaking technology, using a water colour based background and layering the images on top of one another it gave the whole film a more 3D look, as opposed to a simpler background which resulted in a more 2D feel of older animated films. Each image layered could be moved and shaped which also gave more interaction with the environment. Furthermore, with the characters themselves, it was easier to use previous designs of animals, such as their shape, than create an entirely new design for a new production. Consequently, the shapes of Baloo (the bear), Shere Kahn (the tiger) can also be seen as cameos in other newer productions.
Disney’s ground-breaking technology in 1938 with their multiplane camera allowed them to make classic animations that are beloved to this day. The awards given to the company for their great technological advances were not in vain. The 1967 Jungle Book used the multiplane camera, as aforementioned the paintings were layered. They are split into the foreground, middle ground and background. These individual layers could be moved separately to create motion depth making animation feel more real than ever before. This enticed audiences into the cinemas to watch Disney films such as The Jungle Book.
Xerography allowed them to copy and paste other characters from other Disney films as sheer khan and Bagheera were used on another Disney movie ‘jungle cat’ this meant they could save time and money having to draw and reanimate the movement on some of the characters meaning they could focus on other things and just make the overall film more appealing and stick with the children friendly design.
In the 2016 live action remake of the jungle book technology was the main focus for Disney as they wanted to make sure they brought everyone’s favourite characters to life and could make it as realistic as possible. This arguably lost the sense of a story in the live action remake though as so much time was spent making sure the CGI and picture were great that they forgot about the reason why everyone loved the Jungle Book and how the story and personalities of the characters along with the songs made the jungle book what it is today.
Therefore, if it wasn’t due to the earlier success in the ways that the 1967 version took to its attention to detail then we might not have been fortunate enough to have experienced a 2016 edition. Technology that was used in the 1960’s was extremely expensive and time consuming to achieve but it did serve something special for the 1967 Jungle Book because the animated characters will forever be talked about whereas, although the 2016 version has some fantastic CGI effects regarding the animals and the backgrounds it does take away the whole purpose of this child friendly magical film.
Technical convergence is one of the most important ability to have in film industries and audiences. It plays a massive part in consumption, production and exhibition. In the production of the Jungle Book 1967 version Walt Disney was very limited in his production line as Disney were not as popular and rich as they are now.

Technological advances helped Jon Favreau make realistic animals for the audience so adults and children could watch the film without the film being too childish. With realism and the children like play the movie was for all ages. Whereas the 1967 was primarily for younger audiences because of its cartoonish nature. (adults wouldn’t watch it)

In 1967, technology was not as advanced as it was in 2016. When The Jungle Book was first released, it was groundbreaking due to it’s detail in the landscape and including the shadows of the animals. Because of this, a wider audience wanted to come and see it as they were being treated to something new that no one was able to do beforehand. This is also similar in the 2016 version of the Jungle Book. Even though technology had advanced massively and it wasn’t a massive surprise to us that they could make animals realistic and look like they were talking, it was still amazing to see a movie, that used to be a box office hit and undoubtedly one of the best movies released in it’s time, do so well and be brought back to our big screens in a more modern way. This all came with the invention of CGI and the advances that technology had made. The ability to be able to do this was major in making the movie as big as it is today.
Thom
Technology also had a major impact on changing the exhibition of a film. When the 1967 Jungle Book was released it was released in cinemas and then on VHS. It was also put in the vault and only re-released on VHS and DVD every couple of years. This help increase demand for the film. The 2016 Jungle Book was released in a variety of different formats to try and make audiences watch the film. The film was released in 3D and Imax as well as in 2D. This would entice audiences into going to watch the film as it would be the first time an audience has watched a film in that format. Therefore, the technological advancements ensured that the 2016 Jungle Book made the most money as possible. This version of the film was quickly put on streaming services which meant that the demand for the film quickly diminished after release.

Disney is a multi-million-dollar company, one of the largest within the film industry. They have bought numerous franchises such as Marvel and LucasFilm as well as other big companies, for instance Sony. 2019 was Disney’s biggest grossing year, the other members of the ‘Big Five’ did not come close to Disney’s over 2 billion dollar profit. Therefore, you could argue that Disney being the biggest conglomerate would put restrictions on the creative aspect of the production. However, you could also argue that having an easily available large budget could provide advances to the production.
Mesy
In the jungle book 1967 Disney used its own studios and to animate and produce the film and were able to add their own influence to the movie as Disney were on top of the animation game at the time and had no real competitors at the time. Walt Disney and his production team were able to decide on everything and put their own influence in the film as the original script of the jungle book had a much darker tone and was closer to the book since Walt Disney owned the production companies it meant that he could scrap the script and he did, they were able to create the version of the jungle book they wanted.
Ben
Furthermore, when the film industry heard about the production of the upcoming 2016 Jungle Book everyone wanted to get in on the act. This was due to how successful the original 1967 one was. You had some of the biggest names in the film industry lining up to help work in this production. To extend on this, the fact that this film was already so successful and was being made again by the biggest company in the world in Disney, the excitement around it would grow massively. The importance of it being Disney was huge as a lot of funding would have to go into the production.
Hannah
During the time that The Jungle Book was produced in 1967 Disney didn’t really have much competition within the industry, this was due to their earlier successes. However, in order to continue being successful they needed to maintain what they were doing well, so films such as The Jungle Book were vital for providing Disney with that name that we all know and love today. Furthermore, because Disney managed to continue producing exciting films all throughout the 90’s it meant that they became the largest company in the industry – meaning that their budget increased so they could hire huge stars.
Kelsie
Therefore, it is important for Disney to keep production of films high and to a decent high quality standard, always putting money into the production of their films and including good well-known actors in their films to keep people hooked and interested in what they are producing and making for viewers but also include variation in what they are making to keep originality to the films so Disney carries on being a well known in the film industry.

Explain how the production and distribution of major Hollywood films has changed since the 1960s. Refer to the two versions of The Jungle Book to support your answer. In your answer you must: Explain how historical and economic contexts influence the production and distribution of major Hollywood films.
Ben
Firstly, the production and distribution has changed significantly since the 1960s for major Hollywood films. This is arguably mainly due to the development and advancements we now have in technology. For example, the 1967 Jungle Book became a huge success after its initial release and it heavily influenced future Disney films. At the time though there were not as many ways to distribute the film and get it out there across the world. However, now with the remake in 2016 it was significantly easier to get the film distributed around the world due to the advancements in technology and the popularity of Disney.
Hannah
Another difference regarding the way that films were produced in the 1960s compared to the present day is that there tends to be more people behind the production team. During the time that Jungle Book was first created in 1967 Disney only had a small minority who would produce and work on the film itself. This has changed when you compare it to the 2016 version as the production team was huge meaning there are greater ideas involved.
Kelsie
The 1967 production of the jungle book was mainly done by multiple paintings of the scenes and then the actors voicing over the top so only a certain amount of the images were created and because certain movements were the same they added them onto other parts of the film. Similarly this is done in the 2016 version but instead the scenes are made with CGI and green/blue screens to create the scenes and setting of the film and some of the settings and sections from the CGI animals were repeated if similar scenes and actions were done again.
Rohan
Production naturally changes and gets better throughout time, with the 1967 version technology was limited and what then was ground-breaking is now old and outdated. With new advancements comes better ideas and better visuals. For instance, to create shadows on actor Neel Sethi who was the only thing not CGI onset, everything else was animated, they needed to make this sense of realism. They used LED lights and manipulated them around Sethi to create this image that the animal is passing him, with CGI magic you cannot tell the difference between real life and CGI. Production gets better through more outbreaks in technology.
Monique
Distribution of the 1967 Jungle book was strategized to bring in the most profit. After its initial release date, the film was brought back into cinema’s numerous times. The time periods between each release relied on loyal fans from the previous screenings to come again and bring their new or perhaps old families with them. After this the jungle book was released on DVD for viewers to watch at home. Now with our infinite streaming platforms it would be harder to re release films into theatres and acquire a good turnout. Therefore, Disney built up a lot of anticipation for the 2016 jungle book and released once for a couple weeks in the cinemas. This differs extremely from its original whom its success is thanks to the rereleases.

Explain how changes in production and/or distribution methods have affected the film industry?
Changes in production and distribution have affected the film industry in a massive way and this evident from the changes between The Jungle Book 1967 and The Jungle book 2016. Production has been affected by new technology, which allows the filmmakers to make photorealistic animals and sets, instead of having to draw it. Ways of distributing the film has also been affected by technology. While both the 1967 and 2016 Jungle book would have used trailers and posters to market the film, the 2016 Jungle Book was also able to use social media and cross promotion, so the film appeals to a wide audience.
In 2016 a lot more methods were available for them to distribute the movie, because of social media this allows them to promote the movie with trailers and teasers without having to spend any money. And because Disney has people sharing and tweeting these posts this allows the trailers to go around to a larger audience so people can see what is being released. The 2016 version was also able to be released in 2d and 3d, and could be watched through DVD, Blu-ray and amazon video and google play. This differs from the 1967 version where they had to spend a lot more money to promote the film as not no social media was available.
In 1967 the availability for distribution was limited as the demand for film was a lot lower than it is now, because of hard copy media distribution was made possible and allowed Disney to spread awareness of the 1967 Jungle Book. Production of films in 1967 where also basic and cheap as they need less people to work on the film, The jungle Book 1967 used one artist to draw the animations and a few more people to help film and edit this really differs to 2016 as hundreds of people will work on a couple seconds of the film at a time.
In both 1967 and 2016, the films were mainstream therefore they could be watched in cinemas. This meant that people could pay to watch the film before it is released anywhere else which increased the demand because people didn’t want to wait however long if it already available to them. Also, cinemas were social events and in 1967 there wasn’t a massive variety of places for people to go as there are now therefore, people are more likely to visit the cinema with their friends.
Disney is an international conglomerate business and It is very important of who owns the production companies of films for example the 1967 version of jungle book Disney owned had his own production and even distribution such as Buena vista.
ben
Furthermore, Disney are a much more well-established enterprise right now and have a significantly large budget than the used to, therefore the production of their films is a lot easier to work through nowadays. For example, big name actors will be attracted to the prospect of working for Disney and being in a Disney film. This therefore increases the popularity of the film as the public see their favourite actors involved. An example of this is when the Beatles ejected the proposition of working in the 1967 Jungle Book film however actresses such as Scarlett Johansson agreed to work in the 2016 one.
Hannah
Due to Disney’s well-established name it means that their doors are wide open when it comes to reaching big stars, some people will only go to watch a film because a certain person happens to be in it. Therefore, this is great for Disney and because their budget is high, they are able to capture these big Hollywood actors which in the long run will expand and branch out their film to a much wider audience.
Rohan
Due to the large budget that Disney has and being able to afford the biggest star actors it creates a much larger desire to create the film well and make sure it is a well thought through production so you can relate And know it is a Disney production so they can keep audiences hooked into watching any further Disney films to come out so they keep the importance of Disney going and they are still well known.
Kelsie
Consequently, Disney is able to create bigger, better movies now due to their rise in popularity, their ownership of the media, such as Lucasfilm, Marvel and 20th Century Fox. Allowing them to create big budget, highly anticipated movies followed deeply by their loyal fans who have seen their films and loved them.
Explain the importance of ownership in the production of films. Refer to the two versions of the jungle book to support your answer.
Ownership is incredibly important when you come to production of films, this is due to the money, popularity and experience in the film industry.
Disney produced the 2016 Jungle Book which was a major success, this was because of the quality of the film and this was due to the ownership. Disney are very wealthy making it easy to use high tech equipment and produce outstanding editing and effects which increases the quality of the film. The jungle book was able to have these animations and effects due to Disney owning it, this shows ownership is a big importance in productions of films as if it was a smaller company with a limited amount of money the Jungle book would not be so well edited and would therefore effect the quality of the film and the success overall. Another factor in the importance of ownership is the popularity of the company, for example Disney are very well known and have made many successful films so they are experienced with advertisement and plugging the film. This gives the Jungle book an advantage over smaller companies as they know the correct ways to advertise films such as theme parks and social media. This shows ownership is one of the most important factors in the production of films. - Immy.
The 1967 model was produced by Walt Disney productions and was directed by Wolfgang Reitherman and so was the 2016 version despite the two films having a slightly different ending they are still owned and directed by the same. Disney’s ownership is very important because it has helped them gain their popularity over the years. The more ownership that Disney has the more control they have over the film production therefore they can change it to how they want, and because of Disney’s high popularity they continue to do this.- imogen Bowerman
The Jungle book is fully owned by Disney in both films, In the 1967 film Walt Disney and Roy O. Disney, would have had the full ownership as he produced all the of the films. But in the 2016 film it would have changed to giving Jon Favreau most of the ownership along with a man called Brigham Taylor as they were both the main in making this movie a success. Giving them most of the money from this film. Finally, Rudyard Kipling would have got a lot of money as he created it. (Except he died a long time ago)
Overall ownership is very important in the film industry as it strongly impacts how well the film will do, when a certain company has a good reputation and is well known it makes the public interested in the film as other films made by the same company were good. On top of this if a major film company makes a film the public will be intereste as the company would have a lot more money therefore better technology and more advanced people and actors working on the film, better actors are more likely to appear on bigger company films. – Owen

Both versions of the jungle book (1967 and 2016) were both made by Disney. Disney’s ownership is vertical integration. Disney own multiple companies such as Pixar and 21st fox. In this essay I will be writing about the importance of Disney’s ownership over the production, distribution and consumption of both films. Danniella
The ownership of a film such as the jungle book is important because it can affect who will see the film. If the film is not under the right ownership it may affect who will see the film. Cinemas and tv is 1967 were not as high quality standard due to this the first jungle book was not viewed as much, as well as this DVDS were not sold and could only really be seen at the cinema however cinemas were not very popular however once the remake was made in 2016 lots of new technology and venues are running so the remake was much more successful and made a lot more money, this was because of big cinemas around the world, CGI to make characters and animals in the film have a virtual realistic effect. As well as this things such as TVs DVDs, SKY etc allowed the number of viewers to increase massively due to there being so many new ways to watch it. Louis
With Disney being a wealthy popular company, it broadens the audience size as more people know who they are and watch there films. This is particularly due to them being a company who makes generally a lot of family films, this plays a big factor in the production of the film as they know if it is suitable for families the success rate of the film will be higher as families will watch the film in a group rather than as an individual. This shows ownership is a big factor in the production of films as due to Disney’s reputation it increases the success of their films. Immy
Overall ownership is a very important for the production of films . We see this in the 1st jungle book 1967 compared to the 2016 one . If one film is not in the right ownership then it will affect who can see it . Disney’s popularity is growing vast due to their ownership being very important. Disney are a well-known company producing family films showing their success . the only way that you could watch the jungle book in 1967 was at the cinema therefore Disney having full control over this . whereas the 2016 you can asses it on YouTube , Netflix google play and many more . This shows Disney’s ownership has changed from the 1967 to the 2016. Imogen
