When darkness swallowed the Land and all the world became a feeding ground for the living dead, the People were lost.  They died by the dozens, only to rise themselves with the shuffling, persistent gait of the undead.  A new kind of magic was needed and was found.  This was the magic of the Warder, a kind of Cleric of the First Lich, who begs his power to use to protect the People and their villages.  The Warder is the first, last and best defense the People have against the armies of night.

There is little or no traditional Warder.  Although there are definitely (throughout fantasy literature) those who specialize in abjuration, there are few instances of those who devote their magic to stopping the undead and protecting from evil.

The Warder in Hollow Dawn is the counterpart to the Slayer.  He is the defensive line, protecting the People and the villages while the Slayers seek out the living dead to destroy.  This is not to say that Warders are passive.  If anything, Warders are often more passionate about their devotion to life and safety.  Like Slayers, though, there are those who work only for money, using their powers for selfish purposes instead of the noble beneficence for which the warding power was created.  There are even dark rumors of evil Warders who - working hand in hand with black Necromancers - protect the very undead that others so greatly fear.

Warders favor simple garb of homespun cloth.  They are rarely dressed in finery and if they are, are often mercenary Warders, showing off their success and wealth.

Special Notes: Some Powers are marked with [Ward] after their name.  These are Ward Powers and can have special effects or additional effects when Warders use them.  Ward spells often require a circle of rope or other marker.  If the circle itself is dispelled (by use of Dispel Magic, for example) that spell ends immediately: other benefits of the spell do not remain even though the circle is down.

Many of these Ward spells require the setting down of a length of rope or other material.  At the completion of the Incantation, the lain rope cannot be purposefully moved by anyone other than the caster, and anyone who attempts to do so should be informed.  Any such enclosed area used for a Ward spell will be referred to as a Ward Circle.

Warders are a Divine spell-casting class.  The Warder should choose a special symbol as her caster-sigil and mark her spell-book and packets with it.

Warder Powers

Safety Ward

Incantation: 5 minutes of Prayer or Ward Rituals

Call: None

Target: Self                Duration: Instantaneous

Delivery: None                Refresh: Long Rest

Accent: None                Effect: Refresh

The Warder can pray to the First Lich or help her community in order to recharge her spell power.  Between each Long Rest, she can spend five minutes in prayer, pledging herself to her community, her allies, and the First Lich, promising to continue the fight against the Dark. Doing so will allow the Warder to refresh Divine spell-slots.  Each Long Rest she can refresh a number of Divine Novice spell-slots equal to three times her Warder level.

The Warder can spend the five minutes channeling protective power into Ward or Haven Rituals that have been placed on buildings.  If the Ward she is enhancing is not one she cast herself, she will add one slot to the Ward, and will then Refresh one additional Divine Novice spell-slot.  She can do this up to three times per Long Rest.

While refreshing, the Warder can refresh a Divine Intermediate spell-slot in the place of two Divine Novice spell-slots.  Greater spell-slots take the place of three Novice spell-slots, and Master spell-slots take the place of four Novice spell-slots.

At 4th level, the number of Divine Novice spell-slots rises to four times her Warder level.  This rises to five times at 7th level.  At 10th level, this becomes to six times the Warder’s level.

Warder’s Purpose

The Warder can cast the Apprentice Divine ritual, Haven.

Accent: None                Effect: Divine

This divination cantrip will let the Warder know if a particular creature is Undead, a Demon, or a Lycanthrope.  Only one of the three can be detected for by any one casting of the spell.  The spell may not always result in information, due to the frenetic nature of combat.

Earthbind Undead [Cantrip]

Incantation: "By the Grace of the First I pin the living dead”

Call: “Root to Undead, Quick 100”

Target: Undead         Individual        Duration: Quick 100

Delivery: Packet (Spell-Packet)        Refresh: Special

Accent: None                        Effect: Root

Trapping the foot of one of the Living Dead by the pure strength of the First Lich’s glory, this spell is ideal for helping Slayers do their gruesome work. This Power will refresh when the target moves her right foot for any reason, including dying or going unconscious.  If the Warder does not witness the target coming free (or witness the target already free), the cantrip will refresh only when the Warder completes a Short Rest.

Revive [Cantrip]

Incantation: "By the Grace of the First, rise and fight again.”

Call: “Heal 1 to Dying”

Target: Individual                Duration: Instantaneous

Delivery: Packet (Spell-Packet)        Refresh: Immediate

Call: “Heal [x]”

Target: Individual                Duration: Instantaneous

Delivery: Touch                Refresh: Immediate

Accent: None                        Effect: Heal

The Warder can heal damage to an Individual up to the Warder’s level.  This Power, although it refreshes immediately, can only be used to grant a limited amount of healing between Long Rests.  This number is ten times the Warder class-level of the character.  For example, a 4th level Warder would have 40 total points of Healing to give out between Long Rests and could use a casting of this Power to Heal up to 4 points at a time.  Touch of the First will not work on the caster herself.

1st level Warder Spells

Allegiance Boon [Novice]

Incantation: "By the Grace of the First, By the true light of day, His power flows through me, His will I convey to grant a boon to my allies.”

Call: “Heal 2” or “Mend 2”

Target: Self, six individuals                Duration: Special

Armor of the First [Novice]

Call: None

Target: Self                Duration: Long Rest

Delivery: None                Refresh: Spell

Accent: Force                Effect: Grant Armor, Grant Protection

The caster grants herself two Armor Points.  This is summoned armor, so it can be Mended normally, but is not additive with any other physical armor or summoned armor.   It also grants her one Protect against Melee.

Augury [Novice]

Incantation: "By the Grace of the First, By the true light of day, His power flows through me, His will I convey to see the wisdom of my choices.  Boon or Bane to [some suggested immediate action]?”

Call: “Obey: Tell me if it is a good idea or bad idea to [suggested immediate action] by answering ‘boon’, ‘bane’ or ‘unknown’.”

Target: Individual        Duration: Short Rest

Delivery: None                Refresh: Spell

Accent: None                Effect: None

The Warder will only be able to successfully cast this spell if there is a Staff member close by.  The spell lets the Warder determine whether an action she is about to take will be on the whole harmful or beneficial to her and her goals.  She might, for example, ask if it is boon or bane to walk down the apparently empty hallway in front of her.  Or she might ask if it is boon or bane to open the chest she is holding.  If successfully cast, the First Lich will inhabit a nearby person (Staff member) and give an answer of boon or bane.  If there is no good answer, the answer is unknown, or there are bad assumptions in the question (“Boon or bane to trust the emissary of Straavin?” when there is not an emissary of Straavin) will all give “Unknown” as an answer.  If the answer is Unknown, the Warder may add five points into her Touch of the First pool if she has one.  The caster may not intentionally ask questions that will result in an “Unknown” answer.

Fetter Undead [Novice]

Incantation: "By the Grace of the First, By the true light of day, His power flows through me, His will I convey to shackle the undead.”

Target: Individual        Duration: Quick 100

Delivery: Packet (Spell-ball)        Refresh: Spell

Accent: None                        Effect: Bind, Slow

The divine magic of the Warder reaches out, slowing and hindering the Living Dead.  It will charge two spell-balls, one which will bind the arms of its target and the other which will slow it’s target.  The spell-balls must be thrown separately.

Rest of the Stalwart [Novice]

Incantation: "By the Grace of the First, By the true light of day, His power flows through me, His will I convey to grant you his protection even at the brink of death”

Call: “Imbue Heal”, Explanation

Target: Other Individual        Duration: Until used

Delivery: Touch                Refresh: Spell

Accent: None                        Effect: Imbue Heal

This spell can only be cast out of combat on a willing target and the Warder cannot cast it on herself.  The recipient and the caster must sit facing one another while the incantation is completed.  The power imbued is: After the character has been Dying for a Slow Count of 120, she can Heal herself for 1 Life Point.  Note that this Power can be used at any time after the recipient has been Dying for at least 120 seconds.  This ability will last until used, or the end of an Event, whichever occurs first.  The Warder should explain the effects of this power to the recipient.  If the target of this spell is at least 3 levels lower than the caster, the caster gains the benefits of this spell as well.

Warder’s Embrace [Novice]

Incantation: "By the Grace of the First, By the true light of day, His power flows through me, His will I convey to claim my Warder’s right.”

Call: None

Delivery: None                        Refresh: Spell

Accent: None                        Effect: Grant Plus Damage, Grant Radiance

The character gains a special power while in an area protected by a Ward or inside a Circle.  The Warder can do one additional point of damage with melee weapons and spells, and may choose to change the Accent of any damage she does to Radiance.

Accent: None                        Effect: Grant Spike, Grant Shielding, Refresh

This spell can be on up to six people who are within Touch range of the caster and can only be cast out of combat.  This spell can be cast one of two ways, offensive or defensive.  An offensive Bless will grant each beneficiary an additional Spike.  A defensive Bless will grant each target 3 points of Shielding.

Either casting will add two points into her Touch of the First pool if she has one.

Target: Shield                Duration: Until lost or Short Rest

Delivery: Touch        Refresh: Spell

Accent: Arcane                Effect: Grant Shield-Points

Bolster Shield adds a sheath of magical power around a shield, giving it additional hardness, adding 2 shield-points to the shield.  This can take a shield above its maximum shield points.  These points will last only until lost (i.e. they cannot be Mended) or until the shield’s user completes a Short Rest.  This spell will not work on a shield that has been Shattered.

The Warder calls down holy flame to cause another’s equipment to burn.  Any hand that is holding an item will cause that limb to be disabled.  The caster should call only the limbs they can tell are holding an item. If the caster cannot tell whether the hand is empty or not, the limb shouldn’t be called, and is not disabled.

Cure [Novice]

Incantation: "By the Grace of the First, By the true light of day, His power flows through me, His will I convey to cure you of your ills.”

Call: “Cure [x], Cure [x], Cure [x]”

Target: Individual                Duration: Instantaneous

Delivery: Packet (Spell-Ball)        Refresh: Spell

This spell can be used to cure up to three Conditions on a single target.  Casting this spell will add two points to the Warder’s Touch of the First pool if she has one.

Call: None

Target: Self                Duration: Special

Delivery: None                Refresh: Spell

Accent: None                Effect: Grant Immunity

Once the spell is cast, the Warder will gain Damage immunity for as long as she moves neither foot and keeps her hands crossed over her chest.  This will prevent the character from casting Touch spells. When struck by damage of any kind, she should call “No Effect”.  This is a Ward spell.

Safe Return [Novice]

Incantation: "By the Grace of the First, By the true light of day, His power flows through me, His will I convey to return to safety.”

Call: “Insubstantial” “Dispel Insubstantial”

Target: Self                Duration: Special

Delivery: None                Refresh: Spell

Accent: None                Effect: Grant Insubstantial, Cure

After completing the incant, the caster will become insubstantial.  She can then walk directly to the closest Ward Circle that she has laid down.  When she arrives and enters that Circle, she loses her insubstantial Condition and should call “Dispel Insubstantial”.

Warmth [Novice]

Incantation: "By the Grace of the First, By the true light of day, His power flows through me, His will I convey to warm you”

3rd level Warder Spells

Common Good [Novice]

Incantation: "By the Grace of the First, By the true light of day, His power flows through me, His will I convey to ask your boon for the common good”

Target: Self and up to six Individuals        Duration: Instantaneous

Delivery: Touch                        Refresh: Spell

Accent: Radiance                        Effect: Heal

This spell can only be cast out of combat.  The caster chooses a short phrase that praises or reveres the First Lich and repeats it for each member of the group, each of whom must repeat the phrase in order to get the benefits of this spell.  Common Good can heal a group of Individuals, which includes the Warder, for a total of 25 Life Points, distributed in any way she desires. The Warder should tell each target of the spell how much they are healed for when they say their required phrase.  Anyone who is given at least 5 points of Healing can also be Cured of any one Condition.  If this spell is cast with an Intermediate spell-slot, the number of points of Healing is 35.  A Greater spell-slot will allow 50 points of healing.  The targets of the spell must be chosen when the incantation is spoken, so if, after that, one target refuses to say the phrase, another target cannot be added, although the Life Points they would be given can be given to another instead.

Fortress [Ward] [Novice]

Dispel Protection [Novice]

Incantation: "By the Grace of the First, By the true light of day, His power flows through me, His will I convey to leave my foe vulnerable before me”

Delivery: Packet (Spell-Ball)        Refresh: Spell

Accent: None                        Effect: Dispel

Minor Circle [Ward] [Novice]

This should be communicated to others trying to touch or manipulate it.  As long as the Warder is inside the circle, she has immunity to all Effects and damage.  If the Warder steps out, or uses Powers on anyone outside the Circle, she must pick up the circle and end the spell.  This is a Ward Circle spell.

Characters returned to life in this way will have 1 Life Point.  During the incantation of this rite, the Warder may sacrifice Life Points equal to her maximum Life Point total.  Failure to do this constitutes an infraction of the First Law.  This spell can only be cast once per Long Rest.

Armor Blessing [Intermediate]

Boon Circle [Ward] [Intermediate]

Incantation: "By the Grace of the First, By the true light of day, His power flows through me, His will I convey.  As the slow break of dawn ends the shadow of night, so His power flows through me, I call forth the light, to build a boon circle. ”

Accent: None                Effect: Heal, Mend, Grant Insubstantial

This spell must be cast while inside a white cord, rope, or the like that is no longer than 10 feet long that has been laid down to make a continuous shape (usually a circle).  At the completion of the Incantation, the lain rope cannot be purposefully moved by anyone other than the caster, and anyone who attempts to do so should be informed.  While inside the circle the Warder can distribute healing to people within the Circle.   The Warder has a pool of Healing equal to 10 points.  At-will, the Warder can add 5 points of Healing to this pool by taking a Drain Effect for a Quick Count of 100 (the points cannot be distributed while drained) but cannot ever take the pool above 10 points.  The points from the pool can be given out in any increment by focusing for a Quick 100 on another person within the circle at Touch range.   If the Warder steps out, takes a Short Rest, or uses Powers on anyone outside the Circle, she must pick up the circle, ending the spell. No Warder can have more than one Boon Circle up at any one time.

If this spell is cast as with a Greater spell-slot, the initial pool is 12, 6 points can be added by taking the Drain Effect, and points in the pool can be used as Mending at a ratio of 2 points of Healing to every point of Mending.

This is a Ward Circle spell.

Holy Blade [Intermediate]

The spell allows the touched recipient to do “Wounding 1 to Undead” Delivered by Weapon until they complete a Short Rest.  This should be explained to the recipient.  An individual can only ever have one instance of this Imbue.   If the character is dropped to 0 Life Points or uses another Power, this spell ends.

Judgment [Intermediate]

Wrapping her opponents in iron bands of willpower, the Warder captures a creature and locks it away.  While the creature is imprisoned, the Warder may charge harming or healing powers to use on that creature.  After focusing for a Quick 30, the Warder may either do “[Name or Description] Piercing 2 by Radiance to Imprisoned” as a verbal, or may do “[Name or Description] Heal 2 by Radiance to Imprisoned” as a verbal.  This may be done as often as desired until the target ceases to be imprisoned.

Rebuild [Intermediate]

Incant:"By the Grace of the First, By the true light of day, His power flows through me, His will I convey.  As the slow break of dawn ends the shadow of night, so His power flows through me, I call forth the light, to make this item whole again.

Target: Shattered Item        Duration: Instantaneous

Delivery: Touch        Refresh: Spell

Delivery: Touch                Refresh: Spell

Accent: None                        Effect: Grant Life

This spell gives life back to one corpse for whom the caster knows its Truename, as given by the First Lich.  If the Spirit has already left the body, this spell will be unsuccessful, as it will if the creature has no Truename.  During the incantation of this rite, the Warder may sacrifice Life Points equal to her maximum Life Point total.  Failure to do so constitutes an infraction of the First Law.  This spell can only be cast once per Long Rest.

Incant:"By the Grace of the First, By the true light of day, His power flows through me, His will I convey.  As the slow break of dawn ends the shadow of night, so His power flows through me, I call forth the light, to bond you to your word by the power of your Truename, [Truename]...”

Call: “Obey to [Truename]: Honor the promise you make now.”

Target: Individual        Duration: Event

Delivery: Touch        Refresh: Spell

Accent: None                Effect: Obey

While the target is within touch range, the incantation is spoken and the target is compelled to honor a promise.  Once the target has made the promise, the Warder will often say some words to accept the promise, such as “The First Lich as your witness”.  Although some leeway on the wording of a promise is allowed, the implied intent of the promise is also important.  Staff may get involved if a party believes that the promise has been broken or significantly bent.  Note that if the Truename is given incorrectly, the spell will have no effect, and “No Effect” should be called as usual.
