Junior High Summer Reading

All students entering grades 6, 7, or 8 for the 2019-2020 school year are required to read at least two books: one must be an award-winner; the second must be within the student’s current Lexile range. The required books must be at least 100 pages. Any genre is acceptable.

For book suggestions, see the following sites: www.ala.org/yalsa/booklists www.ala.org/alsc/awardsgrants www.lexile.com

Each student’s score can be found on the standardized test results that came home in the progress report.

Students are encouraged to continue their one/half hour of reading each day as that will be their homework requirement during the school year.

Each of the websites listed has good lists that should be helpful in locating appropriate books.

If your student does not already have a library card, consider visiting your local library to get one.

There will NOT be any tests on the chosen books, but each student is expected to be able to provide a thoughtful story summary and all other relevant information, such as Lexile level, in a September book talk on one of the chosen books.

Take the summer challenge: Read every day. Don’t get caught in the “Summer Slide”.
