A brief account of work done in Ph.D.: TITLE: Institutional Finance, Employment Generation and Poverty Alleviation: A Comparative Analysis” The study explored effects of institutional microfinance on type and nature of employment in three different districts of Gujarat with different levels of economic development. The study was carried out in 2002-2003, that was an early phase of the microfinance movement in the country, when government promoted this innovative financial practice through commercial banks. Main finding of the study was that the microfinance supported economic activities were competitive in nature, hence soon the beneficiaries lost the competitive advantage to many entrants to the market that depressed the prices. Microfinance helped in sustaining the beneficiaries without uplifting them from their current economic status. Comparison of three districts showed that the beneficiaries from developed districts (Mehsana) with well developed infrastructure were able to gain relatively more, where as in backward district (Panchmahals) could not overcome their vulnerabilities with microfinance. However, it provided with an easy institutional source of credit to beneficiaries helping them to get away from the clutches of private money lenders. The study also observed that access to microcredit to women was a major source of women empowerment. The study recommended that microfinance alone was not adequate in generating sustainable employment generation and hence poverty alleviation. The microfinance has to be integrated with infrastructure development programme in order to strengthen the economic base in order to improve the nature of credit absorption. | ||
