Soft Surplus
is a collective studio / project / event / community space
to learn from each other by making things near each other.
Our priority is to welcome people whose creative practice is integral to their life practice, who want to create a curious, playful, radical, and empathetic community together. The space is organized through collective decision-making processes and in a continuous process of being built and created together.
We’re a community of 20+ members and many many friends, working on art, design, architecture, biology, dance, aerial, illustration, reading, film, performance, technology, and teaching, who want their creative and emotional care to support a community with a healthy gender and racial balance. Most of us are women or non-binary, and most of us are POC. Through our nomination process, we prioritize trustful and personal relationships with each other over our professional and work relationships.
Like a communal garden, our space undergoes constant collective change and co-creation! We tend to it together, through regular weekly ‘gardening’ meetings, where we make collective decisions, host events. Like a communal kitchen, this sometimes means that our space is a little messier and disorganized than we’d like it to be, but this also means that we often have lots of delicious smells and happenings mixing together, created by everyone!
