Week at a Glance

This week’s lesson addresses the following learning standards:

K.2B demonstrate & apply phonetic knowledge by:

(i) identifying & matching the common sounds that letters represent.

K.2C demonstrate & apply spelling knowledge by:

(ii) spelling words using sound-spelling patterns.

Lesson Frame:

We Will: identify and learn different sounds that letters represent.

I Will: identify the letter Mm and produce the sound.

So That I Can: become a fluent reader and writer and be able to enjoy books.

Lesson Delivery (What do we want you to learn?):

 We will practice identifying the letter Mm and the sound it makes. We will practice reading and blending CVC words, onsets and rimes, as well as -en and -et words. We will listen to stories provided, as well as read independently with books at home. WOW words will be practiced as well to help learn words by sight.

Engage and Practice (What do we want you to do?):

  • Practice the letter Mm and create a defining map all about the letter.
  • Choose a phonics activity from the phonics choice board.
  • Try to read independently or to a partner each day.
  • Enjoy the read alouds posted all about Weather.
  • Practice your WOW words by choosing an activity from the WOW word choice board.

Create and Submit (What do we want you to turn in?):

  Submit your letter Mm thinking map (picture or video) by uploading it to your SeeSaw journal.

Optional Extension Opportunity (What do we want you to do if you want to extend your learning?):

  • Can you think of more than 3 words that begin with the letter Mm for your defining map?  Take your thinking map to writing and write about an object or objects  that begin with the letter Mm. Illustrate your writing.
  • Create a letter Mm craft. Letter Mm crafts    After you create, write about and explain how you made your craft.

WRITING

K.10(B) develop  drafts - organize ideas in oral, pictorial, or written form

Lesson Frame:

We Will: develop a writing draft.

I Will: take my time to develop a writing draft and focus on writing one complete sentence and a detailed drawing.

So That I Can: Become a Better Writer!

Lesson Delivery (What do we want you to learn?):

Based on a topic, write on topic and draw a picture that reflects your writing.

Engage and Practice (What do we want you to do?):

Practice writing skills:

  • Writing portion: Capital letter, spaces between words, sounding out words (please refrain from helping them spell words correctly), period at end of sentence, occasional use of “because” and “and”
  • Drawing portion: at least 5 details in picture, real colors, no scribble, draw all of picture with pencil before coloring, color in the lines, draw yourself, picture matches drawing

Create and Submit (What do we want you to turn in?):

By Sunday, upload to Seesaw (video or picture) of the prompt 3 ( “I wish it would rain ________ because_________.”)

Optional Extension Opportunity (What do we want you to do if you want to extend your learning?):

  • Choose one letter of the alphabet and have them write a sentence with 2-3 words starting with that letter. Ex: "Anna the alligator ate an apple."
  • Free write about something that interests you.Try to write more than one sentence on the same topic.
  • Tell me about your best friend.

MATH

This week’s lesson addresses the following learning standards:

K.3A  Model the action of joining to represent addition and the action of separating to represent subtraction

Lesson Frame:

We Will: add and subtract to create and learn the part-part-whole relationship.

I Will: create number sentences/stories using +, - and =.

So That I Can: compose and decompose numbers to learn basic math facts.

Lesson Delivery (What do we want you to learn?):

We will model the action of joining to represent addition and the action of separating to represent subtraction.

Engage and Practice (What do we want you to do?):

  1. Using any objects as counters, create an addition and subtraction story.
  2. Solve your story problems.
  3. Write your stories in sentence(s) with words .  

Ex.  One time I saw 3 butterflies then I saw 2 more butterflies.  I saw 5 butterflies in all.

  1. Write the number sentence.  Ex. 3+2=5
  2. Illustrate your sentences.   +     =  5

Create and Submit (What do we want you to turn in?):

All work is to be completed and turned into SeeSaw by Sunday.

  • Write and illustrate a joining (+) story problem with a number sentence.
  • Write and illustrate a subtraction (-) story problem with a number sentence.
  • Take a picture of your stories and upload to SeeSaw.
  • You may also make a video in SeeSaw telling about your joining story and your separating story and reciting the number sentence for each story.
  • When in SeeSaw click on the green + icon.  There are choices to upload your work.  You may choose a photo, video or you can upload a photo or video from your phone..

Based on your observations, describe how weather can change from day to day and how weather changes in different seasons.

Engage and Practice (What do we want you to do?):

Make a Weather Recording Sheet  (like this or make your own) for each day this week. Write down the date, the temperature (either in numbers or words; hot, warm, cool), what’s happening in the sky (cloudy, rainy, sunny), and the type of clothing you should wear.

Create and Submit (What do we want you to turn in?):

Record a short video and pretend you are the weather person on the news. Tell us about the day’s weather and what kind of clothing we should wear. Upload your video to SeeSaw.
