Student Google Account Names Changed to Student ID Numbers

Student Google account names have been changed to match their SD61 student number (see the graphic for an example). This change was made for data privacy, and systems integration reasons. Students must now log in using their student numbers, however they will still see all of their files and existing group memberships. They will also continue to receive messages sent to their old account names, and can be located by a name search as they were previously.

Teachers can print out their students’ new usernames following these instructions.

Attention iPhone Users: Check Your Wi-Fi Connection

Personal iPhones and iPads owned by staff and students may no longer be connected to SD61 Wi-Fi following an update to our network certificate over the summer. If your device is not connecting a new certificate needs to be installed. To install it on your device please follow the instructions here: https://bit.ly/sd61-wifi-update-2021 and share the url with your students.

NOTE: District owned iPads, Laptops and Android devices should continue to connect to Wi-Fi without issue. Basic Wi-fi connection instructions are available here.

Approved Apps Still Require Consent

Several new apps/digital tools are available for student use starting in September. All digital tools are subject to BC’s privacy laws which mandate informed consent from parents (K-8) or students (9-12) prior to use. Digital Consent forms are available in the Parent & Student Connect Portals, and paper forms are available in the office if necessary.

View all of the new tools on this list. A complete list of the tools can be found here. If you’d like to request an app that has not yet been approved please submit your request here.

TECH TIPS

Spruce Up Your District Email Service

Predictive Text on the Outlook Web App

Some people love predictive text, others consider it a needless distraction. The Outlook Web App has predictive text turned on by default, but you can easily turn it off. Click here to learn how to stop Outlook from suggesting text as you type.

Outlook Mobile App

The IT for Learning Department recommends using the Outlook Mobile app on all mobile devices (iPhone, iPad, Android). Using the mobile app can help you separate work email, contacts and calendars from your personal ones. It also lets you view shared mailboxes, and is reliable, regardless of your device’s age. Learn more about the app here.
