Board Member Job Description
United Way of Rome & Floyd County (UWRF)
Unite people and strengthen community by focusing resources to create measurable impact that improves lives.
The United Way Board and its individual members are entrusted by the community with the mission of United Way: they are the fiduciary and governing leadership body who steer the organization in the advancement of the mission. The Board adopts ethical, legal and financial management policies to ensure the United Way has adequate resources to advance its mission and works toward a sustainable future for the organization. Further, the Board member co-owns the organization’s mission, business, and strategy. They ensure accountability of the Executive Director and other Board members for achieving these goals while ensuring the mission is adequately resourced and that necessary infrastructure is in place. This individual leads United Way to benefit the community.
Board Members promote and protect the work of UWRF and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by the UWRF Executive Director, the Board-Executive Director relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected. Specific Member Responsibilities, which may be addressed more directly by committees of the board, include:

This expectation enables UWRF to credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals. Get: UWRF Board Members are expected to contribute to the acquisition of at least one meaningful gift to the organization from the community.
UWRF’s Board Members will serve a three-year term to be eligible for re-appointment for one additional year. A mandatory year off will be observed before a Board Member is eligible for additional re-appointment. Board meetings will be held monthly and committee meetings will be held in coordination with committee members and full board priorities/meetings.
UWRF Board service is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about UWRF’s mission and who has a track record of board leadership. Selected Board Members will have achieved leadership stature in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector.
