Gratitude for Screen Cares First Season Transcript

November 29, 2022

Intro, both hosts:

This is Screen Cares. I'm Jennie and I'm Sarah. And we welcome you to our place to connect beyond the screen and watch better together. <music>

Sarah:

Jennie, I'm so proud of us. Are you proud of us? I'm like really proud of us because we are here and we have done so much work to get to here and I think that what we've done is really nice. I don't know. What do you think

Jennie:

I do too. You know what? I wanna go. I'm just gonna live in that statement. It's so seldom that I get to make something and be proud of it, and more than that, that I get to make something, be proud of it, and be proud with someone else that I really care about.

So yeah, I am proud of us and so I'm proud of us because we made a podcast, and you know, it's one of those things that felt so unattainable.

I know that everyone has a podcast like yeah, they do. But I didn't have a podcast and I didn't have a podcast with my friend Sarah, and I didn't know I was gonna have a podcast that I feel so proud of because it's authentically us and it's authentically our real opinions and it's our thoughts and our time and it's helped me grow as a person. Honestly, every conversation and making this has learned so much. I have learned so much.

Sarah:

We actually talk about a lot of things a lot of times, but it's really cool to see something actually come to fruition. And so, we literally had to learn all the things like you were website building, we were learning how to edit, we were learning how to post things on podcast platforms.

Like these are not things that are just intuitive skills that you're like, “oh, I'll just do that today.” No, no. These are things that we had to learn from scratch. And we've also successfully carved out time for ourselves every week.

Every week for this, not just recording, but for all of the things that go into pre- and post-production, like we actually can say the word ‘production.’ That's fancy. We're fancy.

Jennie:

And yeah, we made time for ourselves and that was probably harder than any single thing that I had to learn how to do for the podcast because, making an audiogram and fiddling with the website, like that's all hard, difficult things, but being able to say, “I need to prioritize this for myself. I will be taking this time each week and or each month or going on a trip or making these, you know, sacrifices,” and also deciding what things I can't, I can't budge on.

Sarah:

The lesson that I have taken away from this very first wonderful season is that, not only is it important to do something that you're passionate about, but it's really important to show your kids that you are a human being and that your priorities matter and that you can do things

Jennie:

And you know, I, I also love that we found the time at the right season of our life, because I can't say that I always could have done this because that's not where we were. Like, I wasn't there in a lot of other years prior to this, but, I'm there now. My kids are pretty self, you know, pretty self-sufficient and it's the time whenever they can be excited for me. They're legitimately excited to see what we've done and to ask what we've learned. And so that's always, I don't know, it feels like I've expanded the kind of window for my family. I, I don't know if that makes sense, but we all see a little bit more and we're doing a little bit more and it's just not a small thing.

We also got to collaborate with other creatives in making this podcast, Melody Hirsch helped work with us and she gave us ideas that we never even knew that we needed to help come up with the warm, what's the word that you always use, Sarah? Analog, kind of inviting vibe that our logo gave us and creating that really helped focus what we wanted screens cares to be. And so thank you so much to Melody and we'll link online to her socials and, you can see more of her work online as well. And then Sarah, who talk about some of the other people who have helped us get Screen Cares up and into the world.

Sarah:

We couldn't have done any of this without my former boss, Nia Wassink. She is, just an incredible human being, an incredible professional, an incredible mentor. And she was the one who initially was willing to take Jennie and my very inkling to start a podcast, because she has a very successful podcast of her own. And so she took the time to answer all of our questions. And now I sort of cringe when I think about some of the questions that we, we were asking because we knew nothing. So Nia, we are so, so grateful for you in helping us to really kind of just get the gumption up to do this.

And, I feel like it's also really important to give a shout out for her podcast. Her podcast is the Non-Profit Reframe. It is fantastic for anybody who's ever worked in a non-profit in any sort of way. It's funny, it's irreverent, it's insightful and interesting. So definitely check that out. But she also clued us in about Boulder Digital Arts. We took a workshop with them.

And then last, but certainly not least is, Brooks Milgate, who we've talked about before on the podcast, but, boy, what a consummate professional who was able to give us just a beautiful audio feel for what we are trying to convey with our theme music, and then also a very, very fun version for Screen Scares.

Jennie:

And an absolutely gigantic and eternal thank you to our kids and husbands. I know that mine shocked and delighted me with how supportive they were and my son's Maxwell, Patrick and my husband, Justin, are my biggest fans.

Having a team behind you who's willing to let you carve out that time is absolutely invaluable. And so I, I wanted to thank my husband and kids, and I know I also am grateful for your husband and kids as well, for them loaning you to me so often, Sarah, to do all of these things.

Sarah:

Oh my gosh. Same, same.

Alex, I'm so grateful for you because you have always been my cheerleader in all of the ways and I love so much and appreciate so much how you and Liam and Violet have been just so willing without even a question or concern of just supporting this dream that Jennie and I have had.

It makes me very, very proud that you guys listen every week, even though you've probably heard it, you know, in the background of our house as I'm editing or whatnot. It means so much that you believe in your mom and believe in your mom's friend.

Jennie:

Thank you to every single person who has tuned in and listened to this. Our first season of Screen Cares. And we invite you to come back for our second season of Screen Cares and we leave proud and grateful and I can't think of any other two ways to be when, coming to the close of a creative process.

Sarah:

Oh my gosh. Proud and grateful. That is, I feel like if we were to make merch with our logo, but for Thanksgiving we could say, you know, we could say “proud and grateful,” but that is absolutely how I feel as well. So thank you so much and thank you, Jennie, for being the best co-host and best friend that I could ask for.

I'm so immensely grateful for all of the talent and the insight and the time and the heartache and the sweat, and hopefully not blood that wouldn't be good, but the tears, all of the things that you have devoted and dedicated to this because, it's a lot. And this is our, our podbaby, as we say. So I'm, I'm so grateful for you

Jennie:

And I'm so grateful for you too. It is our pod baby, and I can think of no greater partner to make this with. You are infinitely gracious and understanding and whenever life is thrown, not, not bumps my way, but like maybe mountains, you have just been like, “yeah, okay. I'll catch you on your side. We're good. I'm here. Are you okay?” And that refrain of “friends first,” that's what makes creative processes like this end in pride and gratitude and not burnout and frustration.

We aren't going away, even though we won't be having our weekly Tuesday releases of new episodes.

But while we are gone, we will still be active on social media. We will still have some things released every now and then. And you can also always circle back through episodes that maybe you've missed or want to re-listen to. And, um, scroll through our social media and answer the questions or engage with the media that that's already there, or recommend it to a friend.

Sarah: Yes, please stay connected with us, and we are just so grateful to have gotten to share this time with you, for our very first season of Screen Cares.
