THL Zofia Kowalewska of the Barony of the Rhydderich Hael

 in the Kingdom of AEthelmearc

Most scroll wordings regardless of the Kingdom carry a particular format:

Name of Royalty giving the Award

       Recipient’s full SCA name

Full name of award being given (no abbreviations)

       Reason for award

Date and name of event and where it is held (shire/ canton/barony)

The order in which these occur can vary.

Address -

“Pay heed all who hear”

A lead in statement is nice but doesn’t need to be there.

Intitulation  -

“We, Elvis and Priscilla, King and Queen of Graceland”

Here is the where you include the name of the King and Queen, or Baron and Baroness.

Notification and Exposition

“Having seen the great works of Cher, in her barding and dancing…..”

The Name of the Recipient (spelled correctly) and WHY they are being recognized.  This is important.  Sometimes we know what the person has done, or we as Scribes event know the person so here’s where you can Flourish the text.

Disposition

“By Our Hands do Award you Arms: ………”

The Award itself.  Always use the Full name of the award.  And be careful when using GRANT and AWARD.

Corroboration and date

“Done this 10th day of May, AS 49 in the Shire of the Angels…”

The date will often contain the modern month and day along with the Society year.  Either A.S or Anno Societatis are fine.  Also, the Society year can be numeric or roman numerals.

Signature

A note for the Illuminators:  ALWAYS LEAVE ROOM FOR THE SIGNATURES!  Many Kingdoms and Baronies will use Seals as well.

Now that you know the general order, lets talk about how to start the wording.  After so many  “All shall know that….”, it gets a bit dull.  Many Kingdoms have samples to get you going.
