Lesson 3: Round a Number to a Specified Precision #1
[One Speaker]
Narrator: We are asked to round the number 227.18 to the nearest ten. [6 in the billions, 7 in the hundreds millions, 8 in the ten millions, 1 in the millions, 2 in the hundred thousands, 3 in the ten thousands, 9 in the thousands, 4 in the hundreds, 6 in the tens, 5 in the ones, decimal point. 7 in the tenths, 2 in the hundredths, 4 in the thousandths, 0 in the ten thousandths, 6 in the hundred thousandths, 6 in the millionths] We can recall from our place value image that our tens place is right here. So we are going to round to the nearest tens place. [2 places away from the decimal] In order to do that we look one place to the right and if we have 0,1,2,3, or 4 we round down and if we have 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 we round up. And in our circumstance we have a 7 so we are going to round up. So this 2 rounds up to a 3. So we have 230. And if we want to see this on the number line. If we've got 230 over here. We are rounding to the tens place so thats why I’m choosing 220 and 230 and 225 would be somewhere right in here. We know 227 and eighteen hundredths is gonna be right about here. [227.18 is marked between 225 and 230] So if we are rounding to the nearest tens we can see we are much closer to 230. So our answer is 230.
