SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES :

       Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week

       Grades 4 through 12

Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week is an intensive program that educates high school students about the American free enterprise system. Bringing motivated students together with business people from throughout the state. This unique concept in learning has enhanced the lives of nearly 50,000 young adults for more than forty years.

During PFEW, participants not only learn to appreciate our free enterprise system, but they also see from a practitioner's perspective what it takes to be successful in an increasingly competitive global marketplace. Student companies simulate the actual operation of their own business for the equivalent of three years. Facing all of the decisions that real executives are confronted by, the student companies are mentored by dedicated business volunteers who serve as Company Advisors. Sharing their knowledge and expertise, Company Advisors address the most significant issues facing business today in straightforward, informal discussions with students.

Accented with motivational speakers and interactive learning exercises, this one-of-a-kind program furnishes a real-life educational experience for eager students. Sponsorship winners grasp the value of teamwork, cooperation and leadership, and are provided with an invaluable opportunity to develop communication skills                                                                                                                                              2024 Dates: June 30 - July 5, July 7 - 12, July 21 - 26, July 28 - August 2                                      Visit our website at: www.pfew.org

Central Electric Cooperative

Youth Tour 2024 will take place June 16-21, 2024. Applications are open now!

Central Electric Cooperative (CEC) values education and training as one of the seven cooperative principles, particularly when it concerns our community’s youth. The National Rural Electric Youth Tour program, sponsored by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) and CEC, offers current high school juniors the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C., for an all-expenses-paid week of fun, learning and sightseeing during the summer before their senior year.

Selected delegates get the chance to meet their state’s congressperson, see the U.S. Capitol, and tour national monuments and memorials with more than 1,800 of their peers from across the country. Students participating in the trip typically visit Capitol Hill, the National Zoo, Arlington Cemetery, the Holocaust Museum and the Pentagon Memorial, among other sites.

The Electric Cooperative Youth Tour has brought high school students to Washington, D.C. for a week in June every year since the late 1950s. The Monday of Youth Tour week begins with National Youth Day, when students from rural America gather to learn about the rich history of electric cooperatives and the important role of being an active participant in our democracy. The Youth Day program features speakers who motivate and honor the spirit of electric cooperatives’ commitment to community and the important role of being politically aware and politically active.

Youth Day is also where the Youth Leadership Council (YLC) members are introduced. The YLC is composed of one student per state who is selected to come back to Washington, D.C., in July for a week of leadership training and fun. The selected student then also plays an active role in the NRECA Annual Meeting the following spring.

Keep in mind that the program involves a great deal of walking. Dress is generally casual, but professional dress is expected for a day on Capitol Hill. CEC is a sponsor of this trip and pays all fees for the students who participate (approx. a $2,500 value per person).

If you want to be part of this fun (free!) week in Washington, please apply at:

Cherry Tree Young Writers Conference - Washington College

10-12 grade

Our motto is “Write Your Truth.” Creative writing workshops at the Cherry Tree Young Writers’ Conference are designed to help you discover answers to questions like: What is your truth? What voice will you use to tell it? The Cherry Tree Young Writers' Conference is a vibrant literary gathering that helps rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors build both their skills and their identity as writers. The world has never been in more urgent need of young people who are willing and able to bear witness. Washington College—home to the famous Sophie Kerr Prize, the world’s largest undergraduate writing award, worth nearly $70,000—is a thriving community where aspiring poets, novelists, and journalists study with prize-winning authors to hone their craft. Writing is often a solitary art, but it needn't be a lonely one.                           At the Young Writers’ Conference, students take intensive creative writing workshops with nationally renowned authors in one of 3 genres (poetry, fiction, or journalism), discuss literature with English faculty, and attend professional readings and craft panels. They explore the world of literary internships and grants in publishing, writing, and editing. And they learn what it’s like to work at college publications such as Cherry Tree, Washington College’s national literary journal. We introduce students to literary life.                                      This summer, our 9th annual literary extravaganza takes place July 16-19. The cost is $795 per participant, which covers all costs—including our "Writing a Successful College Admissions Essay" workshop and letterpress printing demonstration. We have a limited number of full-ride merit and regional scholarships available that cover the full cost of tuition. Learn more at: https://www.washcoll.edu/cherrytree
