USCCO Competition Rulebook
Developed by Trey Farmerͳ
The USCCO (United States Collegiate Organization) Competition Rulebook is composed of two sections: The Requirements and the Competition Outline. The Outline comprehensively describes the format. The Rulebook contains all the details the participant and any other involved entities need to know to fully understand the guidelines to the USCCO competitions. The USCCO board reserves the right to revise this Rulebook at any point and time. References were relied upon for certain sections of the rulebook and format creation. Please find the accredited authors in the References respectively.
Requirements
General Requirements
The requirements outlined within this section apply to all the events within the competition.
Eligibility
Any participant may enter the regional or national competition if the participant is enrolled as a full-time student for the institution they represent and is registered with their group within the USCCO. A school calisthenics club membership is not required to be part of the USCCO.
Equipment and Attire
Participants may use arm sleeves, gloves, chalk, or tape as needed for grip and safety during events.
Long and flowy pants, baggy t-shirts, and hoodies or sweatshirts shall not be allowed as they may hinder judges' ability to assess proper form [2]. Tight fitting sweatpants are allowed.
A warm-up area of at least 1 pull-up bar and one set of dip bars shall be present for all the participants to freely prepare themselves for the event as they please.
Pull-up bars used for events must be competition grade with the following dimensions and tolerances: Height: 7.8 ft (with a tolerance of +/- 1.3 ft), Width: 5.6 ft (with a tolerance of +/- 0.3 ft), Bar diameter: 1.3 in (with a tolerance of +/- 0.08 in) [2]
Parallettes used for events must be competition grade with the following dimensions and tolerances: Height: no higher than 6 in (with a tolerance of +/- 0.6 in), Bar diameter: 1.5 in (with a tolerance of +/- 0.4 in) [2]
Parallel Dip Bars used for the events must be competition grade with the following dimensions and tolerances: Bar height: 4.6 ft (with a tolerance of +/- 0.6 ft), Distance between centers of the bars: 1.8 ft (with a tolerance of +/- 0.26 ft), Bar diameter: 1.9 in (with a tolerance of +/- 0.4 in) [2].
Dip Belts used for the events must be competition grade with the following dimensions and tolerances [2]: Total weight of the belt not higher than 2.2 lbs., Length of the steel chain: 30-34 in, Widest part of the belt width (back): 6.3 in, Narrowest part of the belt width (front): 3.9 in
Crash Pads used for the events must be competition grade with at least the following dimensions: Length of 6ft, Width of 4ft, Thickness of 3in.
Timing
All regional & national competition details must be made public through means of website at least 3 months before their anticipated dates. Details include: (1) Competition layout of selected events from sets/reps, power, freestyle, statics, (2) Event details of specified movements and reps for the Sets/Reps and Power events, of specified weight plate numbers & movements for the power event, and of specified performance durations for the statics & dynamics events.
After the announcer has called the participant’s name to begin their performance, the participant has 60 seconds to commence their performance, otherwise, their performance will be considered terminated/void, and the event continues to the next participant.
All participants are allowed 5 minutes rest time between performances within an event. I.e. between head-to-heads for statics/freestyle & between weighted pull-ups & weighted dips for power. The Sets & Reps event has no break in between.
Format
The Competitions must indicate the selection of general format layout of “sequential” or “parallel”. Rules for each competition layout differ & are stated explicitly for their respective sections.
Sequential format competitions must hold their events one after the other, for example: (1) Sets & Reps, (2) Power, (3) Statics, (4) Freestyle.
Parallel format competitions must hold their events in pairs, for example: (1) Sets & Reps and Statics, (2) Power and Freestyle.
There must be a minimum of 2 participants for the event to be held.
If there are enough participants from each classification, each event will have subsequent tournaments or sub-events within the main event for each classification of participant: the biological male & female.
Both classifications will have their own separate events for the Statics & Freestyle Event.
Both classifications are allowed to interchange for the Power and Sets & Reps Events. Both Male & Females are allowed to compete at the same time during Power & Sets & Reps, but will be ranked separately for finish results.
Staff
- Before the month of August of the preceding Competition year, The board members of the USCCO shall select one Competition Director for each of the Regionals and Nationals competition to be responsible for planning and managing the operations for the day of the competition.
- Before the month of August of the preceding Competition year, the board members of the USCCO shall select any number of Competition Architects to be responsible for constructing & coordinating all of the details for that season’s competitions.
The set of judges for each competition event shall be chosen for each event by the Competition Architects 1 month before the competition date.
The set of chosen judges cannot change during their assigned event to maintain consistency of judging.
If eligible to participate, satisfying Requirement 1.1.1.1, Judges are allowed to compete in other events of the competition besides their event of judging.
All Judges must complete the mandatory judge training before the start of the competition.
Right to Power
Competition Architects reserve the right to modify or remove events and sub-events based on factors like participant numbers, time constraints, or equipment availability.
Judges reserve the right, at their discretion, to terminate a participant’s set for safety, should that participant be displaying signs of absolute muscular failure and risk injuring themselves. Common risks of safety include having to “snake up” & complete a rep with uneven arms, intense shaking of muscles, more than 5 failed attempts at a successful repetition of a movement.
The Competition Director and Architects reserve the right to, at their discretion, disqualify & eject any participant from the competition premises, should that participant be unsportsmanlike, cheating, engaging in verbal abuse, or using performance-enhancing drugs.
Team & Roster
For the “sequential” style competition format, each USCCO club/group is allowed 2 participant slots per male and female category per competition event.
For the “parallel” style competition format, each USCCO club/group is allowed 4 participant slots per male & female category per competition event.
Participants of a maximum capacity team roster shall enter in no more than 1 event.
If a team’s maximum allowed roster size is not full, that team’s members are allowed to participate in any of the other available slots for events within their team to fill out their competition event slots.
Logistics
All competing participants shall check in at the sign-desk or hub.
All competing participants shall fill out a Liability Contract when registering for the competition online.
- All competitions will recognize & award the overall winning team of the competition, as well as the individual participant winners of each event.

Competition outline
Statics + Freestyle/Dynamics
USCCO sees statics and freestyle as two separate events of two separate definitions:
- Statics: Holding stable positions and poses, often requiring significant strength, balance, and muscle control. These exercises focus on maintaining a fixed position for a set duration. Common static calisthenics moves include Planche, Front lever, L-sit, Back Lever. Statics also includes power dynamic movements such as handstand press, front lever pull-ups, planche pushups. This event category is mainly defined by the available equipment of parallel dip bars, parallettes, and floor space.
- Freestyle: Composed of freestyle dynamics (360s, giants, geiners, etc.), static elements (front/back lever, planche, handstand, etc.), and power dynamics (muscle-up, handstand press, front lever pull-ups, etc.). Performing a series of two or more of the three calisthenics constituents is called a “combo” and is another aspect which judges will score upon. Thus, the aggregation of the four areas, freestyle dynamics, static elements, power dynamics, and combos, all form the participant athlete’s routine during a freestyle competition. This event category equipment is limited to only the high pull-up bar.
Format
Both the Statics & Freestyle Event format is a combination of points based and a final head-to-head style sequence-based round between four participants. This method, also referred to as the “hybrid” format for the events, consists of 2 rounds. The first round, the points-based round, in which all participants of the event will compete for 60 seconds with a panel of three judges to score each participant. Then, the top 4 highest scoring participants from the first round will be selected to compete in the second & final round, the head-to-head.
The head-to-head is a series of 30 second sequences in which competing participants will interchange with one another. Each competitor will perform in intervals, switching out with one another once their 30 second slot is finished, with no break in between switching. Once the first participant completes their 30 seconds and exits the event area, the next participant moves in and their 30 second slot begins, & the third participant follows with their 30 seconds, and so on. Each competitor will perform 2 sequences of 30 seconds, and each participant will have the opportunity to perform for a better score once their turn comes back to them, as the participant’s best score of either of the 2 sequences will be used in the final ranking. Within their 30 second round, the participant may perform any movement of their choosing on the given equipment in the area, and/or on the ground. If a participant wishes to not perform for the entirety of the 30 second round, but to instead take rest & recover for their proceeding round, they may wait in the event area until the 30 seconds is complete & the next participant swaps in. For an example of the head-to-head style, please refer to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4YxqbaW1_Q and any other Burning Gate Competitions [3], but instead we will have 4 athletes interchanging.
The total number of points a participant may score from successful movements and other factors will determine the winner. The movements that a participant performs will be scored by the event’s Judges based on general criteria of movement execution and transition fluidity. These parameters, & if the movement is performed properly, are entirely held at the Judges’ discretion & rationale. Not only will the judges credit each participant for each successful movement performed, but they also have the option to give extra points to a participant for aspects outside of the execution of a movement. Extra points may be given for fluidity of the movements, transitioning between the movements, and having a unique style of performing, and many more, all which may be delivered at the Judge’s volition. During the round, the judges will only focus on the participant and watch for cues successful & “clean” execution of the movements performed. One staff member is responsible for recording the specific movements the participants performed, also marking which round of the sequence the movements were performed. This responsibility is to allow the judges to focus completely on the finer details of the participant’s form rather than continuously recording which movements were performed. The staff members shall use the respective USCCO Scoring chart on a laptop to keep record. At the end of the sequence of rounds, the judges shall then review the staff’s record of associated performed or attempted movements of the participants and will edit the baseline score of each movement to their liking, whether removing the movement due to insufficient performance criteria, subtracting points, or adding points. The total score for any participant shall be an average of each of the three judges’ scores for the respective participant’s best sequence round. After adjusting the baseline score for each participant, the results will be announced by a Staff member both vocally & physically by the act of raising the winner’s hand, as well as the subsequent following finishers if needed.
Power + Sets & Reps Events
General Rules
For these events, participants may perform in parallel in no more than 4 teams or participants at any given time. One judge per participant competing is required, each judge to count out loud the number of total reps & indicate whether a rep is deemed a “successful” rep or not. The judge also holds the power to terminate a participant’s event, should the judge witness that the participant is reaching muscular failure and risking injury (i.e. having to “snake up” & complete a rep with uneven arms, intense shaking of muscles, multiple failed attempts at a successful repetition). This ability is solely as a safety precaution, so that no participant will injure themselves at the cost of finishing an event.
Power Event Outline
Format
Participants will complete their performances for both movements and their results of both will be used for total scoring of the power event to determine the winners. The final rep score of each athlete, as well as the athlete’s body weight, will be used in the ISF Coefficients formula [4] for normalization to rank differing participant body weights with their performances. The outcome of this score will determine the overall placement of the winners. A dip belt is required for this section of the competition, and will be provided by the event hosts.. Any dip belt may be used for this event, if the participant is not satisfied with the chosen belt, then they may choose to bring their own for use, but the equipment must satisfy the requirements outlined in Section 2.1.2. Before the set commences, the competitor will put on the dip belt however they would like (weights in front or behind) and put the appropriate weight plate on their belt. Then, the participant may use any means necessary to move into his/her starting position of either dead hanging from the pullup bar or support holding above the dip bars. This includes, and is not limited to, a stool to step up onto and other people lifting the competitor into position. Once in the starting position, & verified as so by the judge, the judge will verbally indicate that the competitor is free to begin their set with “Go” or “Start”. Once this has been called, the competitor has ten seconds to start their set. For each successful repetition, defined in each respective movement’s sections, the judge will verbally count to communicate to the competitor what his or her total amount of repetitions are. If the participant does not meet the criteria for a successful repetition during the movement, the judge will simply restate the amount of repetitions as the same as the previous with a short statement of what criteria the participant did not meet (i.e. “Two! You need to have your chin entirely over the bar!”). The participant has three attempts at a successful repetition before the judge terminates their set. During their set, the competitor may not remain motionless for more than three seconds [5], the judge will verbally communicate to the competitor if he/she is nearing that time constraint with a loud statement of “three!” as a warning to the competitor and to which the competitor must initiate their next repetition, or their set will be terminated by the judge. For the entire duration of a competitor’s set, their hands may not be removed from the bar. There are four scenarios in which termination of a set occurs: (1) If the participant’s hands let go or are removed from the bar, (2) If the participant remains motionless for more than 3 seconds (at the judge’s discretion with warnings given out), (3) If the participant has bypassed their maximum allowed three attempts of a successful repetition, (4) If the Judge feels there is a strong risk of safety for the athlete.
Weighted Pull-Ups
Logistics & Weight for Participant Class
Each participant is to perform the maximum amount of successful repetitions as possible with their respective classification weight plate attached to a weight belt. The weight is as follows:
- Male Competitors: 90 lbs
- Female Competitors: 25 lbs
Successful Repetition Criteria [5]. Pull-up successful rep criteria is outlined within respective sections of The Judging Guidelines Document.
Weighted Dips
Logistics & Weights for Participant Class
Each participant is to perform the maximum amount of successful repetitions as possible with their respective classification weight plate attached to a weight belt. The weight is as follows:
- Male Competitors: 135 lbs
- Female Competitors: 45 Ibs
Successful Repetition Criteria [5]. Dip successful rep criteria is outlined within respective sections of The Judging Guidelines Document.
Sets & Reps Outline
Format
The Sets & Reps events must be selected by the Competition Architects from a Variety Template or past notable Sets & Reps events. The Variety Template is the list of acceptable movements based on participant classification. The template is listed within Section 4.2.3.2. This is to encourage creativity & variety for the differing competitions, as well as to ensure safety & prevent overuse injuries. Certain notable sets & reps events in the past are also included as an option for the Competition Architects to choose from. Both Regionals and Nationals competitions of the same season will make use of the same selected Sets & Reps event format.
The Sets & Reps Events can be solo or tag team style. The event style & movements/reps must be decided upon & published to the website/social media accounts at least 3 months out from the competition date to give participants time to prepare, as mentioned in the Underlying rules Section 2.1.3. The Sets & Reps event is constrained to the maximum time of 1 hour. Releasing teams or participants in heats is strongly encouraged to meet this requirement.
Variety Template & Acceptable Movements/Reps
The Variety Template, for the Competition Architects selected movements, should they wish to create their own unique event, shall be as follows:
- Movements must be chosen from a list of acceptable movements contained within Table 2.
- No participant solo/team performance may exceed 30 minutes total time (to be tested by one of the Competition Architects).
- The event must be under an hour in length, taking all the participants into account.

Participants
Classification
All participants will be grouped for each competition according to their classification of sex. For the competition, each of the main events will be held for each separate classification (I.e. there will be a statics & freestyle tournament for the males & females). Then for the power & sets/reps events, classifications are allowed to interchange but will still be ranked among each’s own class. It is recommended to group together the similar sex participants or teams for the power and sets & reps events.
Team Score Logistics
The competition will award a first, second, and third place team finishing of the male and female teams from the overall pool of schools that entered, as well as the top three athlete finishers for each event of the male and female. The score for determining the winner of the competition will be attained by normalized highest score of the team’s participant finish place. The team with the highest overall score wins the competition. Each event & sub-event in the competition, namely the statics, freestyle, power, and the sets & reps, all yield points for the participant finishers of each event or sub event. Following the equation scheme below, total team points can be generated from the participant finisher’s points.

In the event that a tie still remains after calculating the team scores, there will be a tiebreaker between the two competing teams. The “Sudden Death” tiebreaker is decided from a Best of three that requires that each team send forth three champions to compete for the overall competition win. “Sudden Death” format entails the competitors going back and forth completing one repetition each until one of them can no longer perform the exercise cleanly. The three events that make up the “Sudden Death” include: endurance, with push-ups, power, with 45 Ib or 0 Ib weighted explosive pull-ups (shoulders at least reaching level with the bar), and skills, with 2 rounds of 30 second intervals between the two participants being judged. If one team is to win any two of these events, they are crowned the overall competition winners.
