Report on the Multilinguality of Students of the 1st Model High school of Ilion
Recently, a survey was conducted on the multilingual abilities of the students of the 1st model high school of Ilion in celebration of the European day of languages. This survey asked the students various questions about foreign languages and foreign language learning. The results of this survey are quite interesting, and that is why this report is being written.
1st question: Which languages can you already speak?
We can see that the vast majority of the students can already speak english. The two next most common languages are French and German, most likely due to the fact that these are the only other two languages except English and Greek that exist on the Greek school curriculum. All other languages people can speak are because of extracurricular education and school clubs. It must be noted that the discrepancy that we can see in this chart concerning the fact that according to it only 29.4% speak Greek is only because Greek wasn’t included as a pre-set option.
2nd question: Which languages do you learn in school?
Here we see data that reaffirms my previous claims. Almost 100% of the students answered that they are taught English at school and a considerable amount decided to add Greek to their answer. An Interesting fact that this chart shows is that 16% of students chose German over French as the language that they would be taught in this school.
3d question: Which languages do you learn besides school?
This chart shows that a sizable majority of students have extracurricular lessons to learn other languages. Most of the students have English, German and French classes however there are some that learn Italian and Spanish, and even some that learn East Asian languages like Japanese and Korean.
4th question: How do you learn that/these language(s)?
90% of students say that they learn with a tutor with private lessons or in a classroom. 10% do these lessons online. 40% consume media that features this language, while 11% say that they use freely available learning materials online.
5th question: Which languages do you want to learn ?
This chart is about the languages that students want to learn. The data shows that a lot of students want to learn Spanish or Italian, possibly due to the lack of these languages in the Greek school curriculum. It also shows that the students of this school have very diverse interests in language learning, as evidenced by the sheer variety of the answers.
