ISAIAH 27 - Deliverance of Israel
NOTES BY VERSE
Note: each ** comment in this document is listed in numerical order according to the verse(s) from this chapter
** The first verse of Isaiah 27 paints in vivid symbolic language the judgment against the great world powers (specifically Assyria, Babylon and possibly Egypt) who had shed blood against the Lord’s people <C32>
“Leviathan” (a large sea vessel/creature) first appears in the book of Job and represents a Supra-mundane power, and is a symbol of Satan himself; visions often incorporate animal imagery
Isaiah 27:1 NIV
[1] In that day, the Lord will punish with his sword---his fierce, great and powerful sword---Leviathan the gliding serpent, Leviathan the coiling serpent; he will slay the monster of the sea.
Job 3:8 NIV
[8] May those who curse days curse that day, those who are ready to rouse Leviathan.
Daniel 7:2-7 NIV
[2] Daniel said: “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me were the four winds of heaven churning up the great sea. [3] Four great beasts, each different from the others, came up out of the sea. [4] “The first was like a lion, and it had the wings of an eagle. I watched until its wings were torn off and it was lifted from the ground so that it stood on two feet like a human being, and the mind of a human was given to it. [5] “And there before me was a second beast, which looked like a bear. It was raised up on one of its sides, and it had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth. It was told, 'Get up and eat your fill of flesh!' [6] “After that, I looked, and there before me was another beast, one that looked like a leopard. And on its back it had four wings like those of a bird. This beast had four heads, and it was given authority to rule. [7] “After that, in my vision at night I looked, and there before me was a fourth beast---terrifying and frightening and very powerful. It had large iron teeth; it crushed and devoured its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left. It was different from all the former beasts, and it had ten horns.
Ezekiel 29:3 NIV
[3] Speak to him and say: 'This is what the Sovereign Lord says: “ 'I am against you, Pharaoh king of Egypt, you great monster lying among your streams. You say, “The Nile belongs to me; I made it for myself.”
Ezekiel 17:3 NIV
[3] Say to them, 'This is what the Sovereign Lord says: A great eagle with powerful wings, long feathers and full plumage of varied colors came to Lebanon. Taking hold of the top of a cedar
** God will protect Israel and she will flourish; should briars and thorns (enemies of Israel) spring up, then the Lord would take care of them <C32>
Isaiah 27:2-3,6 NIV
[2] In that day---“Sing about a fruitful vineyard: [3] I, the Lord, watch over it; I water it continually. I guard it day and night so that no one may harm it. [6] In days to come Jacob will take root, Israel will bud and blossom and fill all the world with fruit.
Isaiah 27:4-5 NIV
[4] I am not angry. If only there were briers and thorns confronting me! I would march against them in battle; I would set them all on fire. [5] Or else let them come to me for refuge; let them make peace with me, yes, let them make peace with me.”
Isaiah 9:18 NIV
[18] Surely wickedness burns like a fire; it consumes briers and thorns, it sets the forest thickets ablaze, so that it rolls upward in a column of smoke.
2 Samuel 23:6-7 NIV
[6] But evil men are all to be cast aside like thorns, which are not gathered with the hand. [7] Whoever touches thorns uses a tool of iron or the shaft of a spear; they are burned up where they lie.”
Ezekiel 2:6 NIV
[6] And you, son of man, do not be afraid of them or their words. Do not be afraid, though briers and thorns are all around you and you live among scorpions. Do not be afraid of what they say or be terrified by them, though they are a rebellious people.
Another commentary says “briars and thorns” represent those who have fallen in the Church, as in the thorns among the harvest <B20>
Isaiah 10:17 NIV
[17] The Light of Israel will become a fire, their Holy One a flame; in a single day it will burn and consume his thorns and his briers.
** The Lord's care of His people is ceaseless...
• No parent was ever so vigilant over a precious and only child
• No gardener was ever so attentive to a delicate and favorite plant
• God visits, He watches, He supplies
• He studies our needs, and provides for each of them
• God's SUPPLY will be constant, in every season
• It will be suitable, like refreshing moisture to a thirsty plant
• It will be in small portions, as the gently falling rain
• It will be imperceptible, like the morning dews
If the Lord would cease to water, we would soon wither and die!
• It is by these divine 'supplies' that our graces are kept alive
• Our dependence on Him is absolute!
• Our obligations to His love are infinite!
Let us not imagine that we are not watered, because we do not sensibly feel it. The constancy, and the gentle gradual manner in which we are supplied, render His loving care virtually imperceptible. <S183>
Hosea 6:3 NIV
[3] Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth. ”
Isaiah 27:3 NIV

Isaiah 41:18-20 NIV
[18] I will make rivers flow on barren heights, and springs within the valleys. I will turn the desert into pools of water, and the parched ground into springs. [19] I will put in the desert the cedar and the acacia, the myrtle and the olive. I will set junipers in the wasteland, the fir and the cypress together, [20] so that people may see and know, may consider and understand, that the hand of the Lord has done this, that the Holy One of Israel has created it.
** The gathering of God's elect at the trumpet call is the gathering of Israel at the end of the Tribulation period in fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy <W213>

[1] Endow the king with your justice, O God, the royal son with your righteousness. [6] May he be like rain falling on a mown field, like showers watering the earth. They will turn to the Lord, and he will respond to their pleas and heal them. [23] In that day there will be a highway from Egypt to Assyria. The Assyrians will go to Egypt and the Egyptians to Assyria. The Egyptians and Assyrians will worship together.
