Subtraction with Larger Numbers
[one speaker]
[Equation: 954-597. The right side of the screen says:
Steps for Subtraction (Whole Numbers)
Narrator: 954 minus 597, we’ll begin by putting our larger number on top, 954, and we will write our smaller number underneath, stacked up according to place value. So we have our ones lined up, tens lined up, hundreds lined up, and now we’re going to check to see where we need to regroup. We have 7 ones that we’re trying to take away from 4 ones, which we can’t do. So we’re going to come over here and we’re going to regroups one of our groups of 10, which will leave us with 4 groups of 10.[she crosses the 5 out in 954, and changes it to 4] If I bring over one group of 10 into my ones column, that will give me 10 ones plus the 4 I already had, so that will give me 14 ones, and now I can take 7 away from 14. If I check my tens column, I have 9 groups of 10 that I’m trying to take away from 4 groups of 10, and I can’t do that. So we’re going to come regroup one of our groups of 100, which leaves us with 8 groups of 100. We’ll bring that one group of 100 into the tens column, which gives us 10 groups of 10, and we’ll add that to the 4 groups of 10 we already have, which leaves us with 14 groups of 10. Now we can take 9 groups of 10 away from 14 groups of 10. Our last column should be good because our larger number’s stacked on top, and now we can start subtracting with our column on the right. So 14 minus 7, 7. Fourteen minus 9 is 5. Eight minus 5 is 3. So 954 minus 597 is 357.
