THE CHIMES // Design Editor

Basic function and responsibility:

Together, the Chimes design editors create layout for the entire newspaper on a biweekly basis. Design editors work closely with section editors to create stunning visuals to accompany stories (sidebars, graphics, illustrations, etc.), and make sure articles and design fit accurately on pages. Design editors also work closely with the managing editor to seek consistency within the newspaper. Design editors are responsible for casting the design vision for special issues of the newspaper.


  1. Assist the managing editor in coming up with a bold vision for the design of the newspaper.
  2. Produce visual elements including infographics, illustrations and sidebars.

  1. Meet with the photo editor to make sure visuals look good on pages.

  1. Arrange ads on pages.

  1. Attend weekly budget meetings. At meeting, formulate and suggest ideas for design to enhance stories presented by other editors.

  1. Select, help hire, and train an apprentice in spring. The apprentice should work five to 10 hours a week under the current editor.

Supervision received: Editor-in-chief, Managing Editor

Supervision of others: None


General: Creative and innovative. Strong organizational skills. Detail oriented. Demonstrate strong knowledge of InDesign. Willing to take design risks. A visual emphasis is a plus.

Education and experiences: At the time of election or appointment, have completed at least one semester at Biola University with a full-time student status and currently be enrolled as a full-time student. During the term of service, maintain a full-time student status. Prior work or class experience in visual journalism or design is preferred.
