2 CORINTHIANS 11 - False apostles and suffering

NOTES BY VERSE

Note: each ** comment in this document is listed in numerical order according to the verse(s) from this chapter

** Paul applied the imagery and symbolism of marriage to the body of believers in Corinth, known as the church  <G72>

• The church is comprised of those who have trusted in Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and have received eternal life

• Christ, the Bridegroom, has sacrificially and lovingly chosen the church to be His bride

• Just as there was a betrothal period in biblical times during which the bride and groom were separated until the wedding, so is the bride of Christ separate from her Bridegroom during the church age

• Believers in Jesus Christ are the bride of Christ, and we wait with great anticipation for the day when we will be united with our Bridegroom

• Her responsibility during the betrothal period is to be faithful to Him

• At the rapture, the church will be united with the Bridegroom and the official “wedding ceremony” will take place and, with it, the eternal union of Christ and His bride will be actualized (Rev 19:7, Rev 21:1-2)

2 Corinthians 11:2 NIV

[2] I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him.

Revelation 19:7 NIV

[7] Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready.

Revelation 21:1-2 NIV

[1] Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. [2] I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.

** People have been deceiving one another since Adam and Eve, so Paul's warning not to be deceived was clearly about something more extreme  <G7997>

• Today, lying and deception have become industrialized (Jan 2025)

• We now have machines with which to spread lies like no generation before us

• More than that, we have machines with the ability to create their own lies

• The internet and artificial intelligence (AI) have done for deception what paved roads did for cars

• The truth is, AI is not just another tool in the belt of technological progress

• It is a mirror and a magnifier of the values, intentions, and ideologies of its creators

• AI is being built in an increasingly post-Christian society

• As such, the values infused into AI systems often reflect secular humanism, progressive morality, and relativistic ethics

• It doesn’t operate in a vacuum; it learns from data sets curated by humans, and it is trained on vast corpuses of information, both helpful and harmful, truthful and deceptive

• Once viewed as a helpful assistant (managing calendars, writing emails, or summarizing research), AI is now transitioning into a source of authority

• AI is not just a battle over jobs or convenience, but is a battle over truth, over authority, and ultimately, over souls

• We are entering an era where millions will unknowingly trade biblical wisdom for machine-reasoned ideology

• People are no longer just using AI to generate content; they’re asking it life questions

• This is not just dangerous, it is idolatry

• We are not just building AI, we are bowing to it and, in doing so, we risk becoming less human, less discerning, and ultimately, less free

• And this is where the danger lies -- not just in the power AI possesses, but in the hands that shape it and the minds it influences  <P1701>

• The problem grows exponentially when individuals, groups, or nations use AI to deceive on purpose which is already happening on a massive scale and getting worse

• They've even renamed 'lies' so they don't sound so bad: an inadvertent error can be called 'misinformation' while an intentional lie is now 'disinformation'

• Need discernment or feel fear? then study God's Word, pray, and stay by the Lord’s side!

2 Corinthians 11:3 NIV

[3] But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.

John 14:26-27 NIV

[26] But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. [27] Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

** Deception is most destructive when it enters the Christian camp and believers deceive themselves   <W2202>

• Followers of Christ can be led to believe they are making a positive difference by following worldly progressive movements when, in fact, are venturing from the gospel toward apostasy

• Don't just rehash the same negative talking points from the world to feel better, but choose to know what's going on in the big picture while obtaining factual information

• It is our duty to fully understand the big picture and accept the facts, whether it's what we want to hear or not

2 Corinthians 11:3-4 NIV

[3] But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. [4] For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the Spirit you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.

1 Corinthians 6:9 NIV

[9] Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men

Luke 21:7-9 NIV

[7] “Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?” [8] He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' and, 'The time is near.' Do not follow them. [9] When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.”

** Paul understood that believers can be deceived and change course   <F60>

• We can see this increasing as the day approaches believing their own lies

• God’s people seem to have a propensity toward deception, confusion, division, feckless, impotent to keep “the good life” the church has had these past decades

• While the church should lead the world, the world is instead turning the church from Christ

• The church is concerned about the demographics of the congregation and not offending anyone

2 Corinthians 11:3 NIV

[3] But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.

2 Corinthians 11:14-15 NIV

[14] And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. [15] It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.

James 1:22 NIV

[22] Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

2 Thessalonians 2:9-12 NIV

[9] The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie, [10] and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. [11] For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie [12] and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.

Romans 13:8 NIV

[8] Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.

** There are five ways a person can recognize a deceiver – one who provides a counterfeit message to the true gospel of Christ  <H87>

1. When they manipulate and play on feelings or spiritual experiences, often promising healing and prosperity

2. When Jesus is not their primary focus; they may mention him every so often but dismiss or mock the tenants of the Christian faith like sin, repentance, salvation and obedience

3. Those who consider the Bible archaic and irrelevant to our lives because it was written thousands of years old

4. When they say the Bible contradicts itself and encourage people to determine their ‘own truth’

5. When the focus of worship is concern over the overall experience, trying to evoke feelings rather than solely focusing on God

James 1:16,22 NIV

[16] Don't be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. [22] Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

Ephesians 5:6-7 NIV

[6] Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. [7] Therefore do not be partners with them.

2 Timothy 3:13-14 NIV

[13] while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. [14] But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it

** “Discernment is not knowing the difference between right and wrong, but it’s knowing the difference between right and almost right”  <S185>

Luke 21:8 NIV

[8] He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' and, 'The time is near.' Do not follow them.

2 Corinthians 11:3 NIV

[3] But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.

** Our faith involves the mind so we can reason together  <H99>

• The mind finds its interface in the brain, a fleshy organ that learns and adapts

• This gray matter can become habituated to lifestyle, thought patterns, and thinking processes

• Just like an exercised muscle becomes stronger, so also the physical pathways of the brain

1 Thessalonians 5:6 NIV

[6] So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober.

1 Peter 4:7 NIV

[7] The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray.

• Faith, belief, and obedience are connected to reasoning

• As Apostle Paul admonished, we are urged to use our mind and not put our brains on the shelf

• In contrast, cultic religions try to immobilize and disable the mind — to circumvent the natural safeguard of the mind

• As Christians, we understand it is true that our minds are not able to fully understand His greatness and His ways but we still accept logic and reason to support our beliefs

Isaiah 1:18 KJV

[18] Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord

1 Corinthians 14:15 NIV

[15] So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding.

• Understand that our mind is the place of the spiritual battleground

• It is precisely what thoughts gain access to the mind — whether through eyes, ears, or spirit — that have an impact upon our hearts and soul

• What the Bible calls the heart is, in essence, what our mind chooses to believe and pursue

Psalm 1:1-2 NIV

[1] Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, [2] but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.

2 Corinthians 11:3 NIV

[3] But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.

** The Lord forewarned us that false teachers would bring forth wicked deception in the last days generation  <P169>

• As the Bible foretold, many would come in the last days proclaiming 'another Jesus' other than our historical Savior and Lord (2 Cor 11:4)

• False teachers are identified by their ruinous heresies that many fall prey to, as well as their deceitful greed

1 Timothy 4:1-3 NIV

[1] The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. [2] Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. [3] They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth.

2 Corinthians 11:4 NIV

[4] For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the Spirit you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.

• We are commanded not to believe in naivety but to test the teachings of those who claim to be prophets

• The true remnant church of Jesus Christ will not put up with false, evil teachers as their shepherd

Revelation 2:2-3 NIV

[2] I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false. [3] You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary.

** Paul rebuked the Corinthians for easily accepting a Jesus who differs from the One he taught them

2 Corinthians 11:4 NIV

[4] For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the Spirit you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.

** If we follow Paul’s reasoning, lack of eloquence in speech does not diminish the importance of the message we share with others – the same message Paul conveyed to us through the scriptures

2 Corinthians 11:6 NIV

[6] I may indeed be untrained as a speaker, but I do have knowledge. We have made this perfectly clear to you in every way.

** False prophets accused Paul of being a counterfeit because he did not charge for his services  <M130>

• Paul also resorted to manual labor to support himself which also offended the Corinthians

• Paul asked his accusers how refusing support is a sin…?

2 Corinthians 11:7 NIV

[7] Was it a sin for me to lower myself in order to elevate you by preaching the gospel of God to you free of charge?

Acts 18:1-3 NIV

[1] After this, Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. [2] There he met a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had ordered all Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to see them, [3] and because he was a tentmaker as they were, he stayed and worked with them.

1 Corinthians 9:1,11-12 NIV

[1] Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not the result of my work in the Lord? [11] If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you? [12] If others have this right of support from you, shouldn't we have it all the more? But we did not use this right. On the contrary, we put up with anything rather than hinder the gospel of Christ.

1 Corinthians 9:17-18 NIV

[17] If I preach voluntarily, I have a reward; if not voluntarily, I am simply discharging the trust committed to me. [18] What then is my reward? Just this: that in preaching the gospel I may offer it free of charge, and so not make full use of my rights as a preacher of the gospel.

** Paul dealt with false prophets as we continue to face today, accusing them of being emissaries of Satan, knowing and proclaiming their eventual demise; Paul was unwilling to sacrifice truth for unity

2 Corinthians 11:12-15 NIV

[12] And I will keep on doing what I am doing in order to cut the ground from under those who want an opportunity to be considered equal with us in the things they boast about. [13] For such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ. [14] And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. [15] It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.

** Believer beware, for Satan masquerades as a representative of God!

2 Corinthians 11:13-15 NIV

[13] For such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ. [14] And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. [15] It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.

• No wonder false religions are on the rise when those who call themselves believers in Christ cannot discern the fake from the real

• False religion is also attractive to the world because they belong to the Kingdom of Darkness and cannot hear the voice of God; yet those deceived believe they are doing something righteous by advocating for a religion they don't know is false

Matthew 7:13-14 NIV

[13] “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. [14] But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

John 8:47 NIV

[47] Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”

• The most dangerous of false religions are those that 'appear' to be Scriptural but twist its meaning ever so slightly

• False teaching can go from one extreme to the other -- like turning the true grace-filled salvation that Jesus offers into one that requires works and achievement, or only focusing on God's grace and never being concerned about the condition of their heart or results produced

• False teachers typically espouse empty words and an abundance of intellectual knowledge; words and knowledge does not save but must be believed and put into action

• In the end when they stand before God, many will be surprised their words and knowledge did not get them anywhere; they never submitted to the will of God

2 Timothy 3:5 NIV

[5] having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.

James 1:21-22 NIV

[21] Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. [22] Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

• It is imperative believers in Christ continually deep-dive into the Bible to learn from God's 'primary source', for only then can they identify a prevalent Doctrine of Demon

• Believers must examine themselves for a false sense of assurance, such as believing in a formulaic prayer and never examining the condition of their heart to determine their motives and priorities

• In order to have an acceptable walk with God, the desires of a believer's heart must center on Christ; He will not accept a divided heart

Proverbs 23:26 NIV

[26] My son, give me your heart and let your eyes delight in my ways,

2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV

[16] All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, [17] so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

2 Corinthians 13:5 NIV

[5] Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you---unless, of course, you fail the test?

• Genuine followers of Christ aim to reject the ways of a sin-filled world on a daily basis and, as a result, are known by Christ-inspired fruit

• We must desire to say and do as God commands, practicing the law of God  <M130>

• To God, our hearts must be exclusively devoted, in all its faculties; nothing must be an object of hope or fear, joy or sorrow -- except which is subservient to His glory and in obedience to His commands  <S179>

Luke 6:43-45 NIV

[43] “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. [44] Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. [45] A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.

• When all is said and done, God will judge the heart of every individual to determine whether they truly believe in Him or are putting on an act

Matthew 7:21-23 NIV

[21] “Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. [22] Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?' [23] Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'

** Anyone can apply the label of ‘Christian’ to a pagan mystic belief system, but that doesn’t then make it Christian or even a version of it; Christians follow Christ’s salvation message ONLY and EXACTLY as spelled out in the Bible

• Knowing Christianity as a popular and generally-accepted belief system, false religions often ride the coattails of the Christian faith by editing God’s message and appeal to hopeful converts with their false doctrine

• Unless a religious group or person promotes Christ’s UNALTERED offer of salvation, then listeners should ignore the message

• Likewise, politicians often try to appeal to Christians for votes, saying what they think believers want to hear without actually following through on the supposed moral convictions when getting into office

• Be wise to those manipulating the gospel message and don’t move from Scriptural truth, no matter how convincing another’s viewpoint sounds!

Ephesians 4:17-21 NIV

[17] So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. [18] They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. [19] Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed. [20] That, however, is not the way of life you learned [21] when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus.

1 Timothy 6:20 NIV

[20] Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge

** The closer we approach the end times, the more false messiahs will appear claiming to be 'all things to all people'; this completely fits in with these unitarian days of apostasy  <M1501>

• We are told that false prophets will inundate our world in the last days, and they may appear benign or even genuine, but harbor harmful intentions

• Satan works through false prophets/teachers and will try his best to separate true believers from their faith

• Believers should be prepared to discern not only the claims of individuals but also to scrutinize their teachings and practices carefully

• We should not listen to false teachers who deceive, seeking to separate us from God  <P169>

Matthew 24:5 NIV

[5] For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Messiah,' and will deceive many.

** Believers in Christ are in an ongoing spiritual war, and should depend solely on the Holy Spirit for spiritual support rather than the world and its pagan technology

• Christians are instructed to recognize the spiritual war and the tactics of the enemy he uses against them when possible

TECHNOLOGY

• We live at a time when technology is advancing exponentially with few guardrails; Satan is no doubt directing its development

• Researchers are pretty much doing whatever they feel like doing  <S2004>

• It would be great if they realized just because something is possible doesn’t give them license to do it!

• For instance, what is considered 'a line too far' with gene editing and self-taught computers?

• Add to this, the development of AI guided by profit-driven biased algorithms (Aug 2025)

• The majority of users -- believers and non-believers alike -- increasingly accept whatever answer AI spits out without even thinking to question and verify

2 Corinthians 11:14 NIV

[14] And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.

DEPENDANCE

• As Christians, are we not to rely on the Holy Spirit rather than AI technology for guidance and support?

• We are to devote our lives to Christ and He will show us the way, not looking for quick answers from pagan sources

• We are living in an ongoing spiritual battle with a real enemy against Christ and His followers

• The enemy would love people to go to AI rather than God!

• Instead of going to a man made tool, let's go to the eternal God  <K110>

John 14:16 NIV

[16] And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever---

** Entertainment is not neutral, for it is discipleship in disguise  <H9993>

• The question to ask: who is doing the discipling?

• It's never just a movie, show, song, game, or book, for what we consume through our eyes, ears, and minds shapes us

• Movies, shows, songs, games, and books are today’s Trojan Horses

• Media doesn't just storm the gates but slips inside dressed as laughter, art, and harmless fun and with the package comes the payload

• They deliver worldviews that deny God, normalize sin, glamorize the occult, invert morality, and reshape how viewers see truth

• Entertainment molds our worldview, influences our desires, and can either draw us closer to God or push us further into compromise

Psalm 101:3 NIV

[3] I will not look with approval on anything that is vile. I hate what faithless people do; I will have no part in it.

• By the time the credits roll or the playlist ends, the message has already been delivered and the heart is a little more desensitized, a little less discerning

• Darkness rarely shows up looking dark

• It looks fun, exciting, beautiful, even good -- until it begins reshaping what we believe about truth, morality, and God Himself

• We live in a world where people can quote spell incantations from movies better than Scripture, where song lyrics shape identity more than the Bible, and where 'binge watching' has replaced Bible reading

• What we laugh at, sing along with, or excuse as harmless eventually becomes what we believe and accept

2 Corinthians 11:14 NIV

[14] And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.

Ephesians 4:22-24 NIV

[22] You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; [23] to be made new in the attitude of your minds; [24] and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

** Satan masquerades as an angel of light and is the master of deception  <H9993>

• He does not only operate through outright falsehoods but through half-truths and seemingly logical reasoning that ultimately lead people away from God

• For instance, no matter how well-programmed, AI cannot possess the Holy Spirit

• The danger of AI in theological discussions is that it can present arguments that sound biblically sound but lack the discernment and spiritual depth that only the Holy Spirit provides

• A well-structured Christian argument without the Spirit’s guidance may win an intellectual debate but fail to transform a heart

2 Corinthians 11:14-15 NIV

[14] And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. [15] It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.

John 16:13 NIV

[13] But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

** Think of the most charming, attractive and welcoming individuals, but when unmasked reveal hearts of pride, recklessness and desire death — and that is likely how Satan and his comrades masquerade and interact among us

• Paul was frustrated to see Corinthians devoting themselves to human leaders rather than Christ

• How baffling when modern ‘super apostles’ appear, and our friends seem more committed to them than to Jesus  <R1795>

2 Corinthians 11:14-15 NIV

[14] And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. [15] It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.

1 Peter 5:8-9 NIV

[8] Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. [9] Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

** Paul did not view disagreement with the false teachers as mere academic debate, for the souls of the Corinthians and purity of the gospel was at stake  <M130>

2 Corinthians 11:19-21 NIV

[19] You gladly put up with fools since you are so wise! [20] In fact, you even put up with anyone who enslaves you or exploits you or takes advantage of you or puts on airs or slaps you in the face. [21] To my shame I admit that we were too weak for that! Whatever anyone else dares to boast about---I am speaking as a fool---I also dare to boast about.

** Paul is an amazing example of how suffering and persecution must be endured for the sake of the gospel — including flogging, prison, beaten, stoned, shipwrecked, exposed to bandits, danger from others, physical deprivation, escaping authorities, longing for the salvation of others and conviction of personal sin

2 Corinthians 11:23b-29 NIV

[23] I have worked much harder, been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again. [24] Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. [25] Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was pelted with stones, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea, [26] I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews, in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers. [27] I have labored and toiled and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food; I have been cold and naked. [28] Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches. [29] Who is weak, and I do not feel weak? Who is led into sin, and I do not inwardly burn?
