How can I get to the forums?

The forums are now Google groups which you can enjoy both through the web or via email -- your choice.  To access the web interface:

  1. Go to groups.google.com
  2. Click on
  3. Click on waterloocyclingclub.ca in this at the top of the page:
Note: you can go directly to your waterloocyclingclub.ca groups using https://groups.google.com/a/waterloocyclingclub.ca/forum/#!myforums. You may find it useful to bookmark this direct link in the your favourite web browser for quick access.
  4. See a view like this:
  5. Click on any group name to view the posts in that group.  As a club member you are welcome to post in any forum to ask a question, start a discussion or tell a relevant story.  Feel free to add photos! Note that you can mark a group as a favourite by clicking on the star beside the name. Some particularly handy posts are “pinned” so that they always appear at the top of the posts for quick reference.

How can I get less email?

When you join WCC, you are automatically a member of a number of web discussion groups or forums.  By default, you will get an email every time someone posts to one of these groups but you can control this.  You can get all the messages in a group once a day or never get email at all. To control this, first go to the web interface for the forums.  See How can I get to the forums?  Or just follow a link that is at the bottom of every email from the forums.

  1. See a view like this:
  2. Click on the “Every new message” dropdown and select one of the other options:
  3. You need to do this for each group

How do I find out about rides?

All WCC rides are recorded in Ride with GPS.

  1. If you don’t have a Ride with GPS account already, go to https://ridewithgps.com/ and create a free account.  Now find the email that you got from info@ccnbikes.com when you joined WCC and follow the link in that email to join the WCC club within Ride with GPS.  (If you can’t find the email, send an email to info@waterloocyclingclub.ca to ask for help.)
  2. Sign into Ride with GPS, look to the upper left and click on:
  3. Look down the left margin for:  and click on it
  4. See the set of tabs and click on Events:
  5. We recommend using Calendar View
  6. Current rides and events are listed on the left and on the calendar, any day with a ride will have an orange underline which you can click on. (Due to a bug in Ride with GPS, the orange underline can’t be relied upon.  Use the list on the left.  Hopefully this will be fixed soon!) Rides will have a “- confirmed” suffix if it’s all set to go.  It may have a “- tentative” suffix if some details are missing.  A “CANCELLED - “ prefix on the name means it has been cancelled for weather or other reasons.
  7. Click on a ride you are interested in -- you will see the starting location and time, the route and some ride details.
  8. If you want to go on the ride, click on  This way you will get an email if the ride is cancelled. (Note that due to a bug in Ride with GPS this might appear as:  within 24 hours of the event -- it still does the same thing.)

How do I tell if a ride is for me?

The club supports rides in a number of disciplines: Gravel, MTB, CX and Road.  Within each discipline, a few different cultures are supported. When you check out the weekly rides in Ride with GPS (See How do I find out about rides?) the name of each ride includes the discipline and the culture.  Often, when you go into the details of the ride, there will be more information that will give you a better idea if the ride is a fit for you.  If in doubt, post a question in the Ride forum.

Why should I RSVP to a ride?

When you RSVP to a ride it gives the ride leader an idea of how many are going to be there.  They may want to plan for splitting into smaller groups if a large number of members will be riding.  Most importantly, if you RSVP, you will be sent an email if the ride is cancelled.  But please be aware that if you have turned off email messages in Ride with GPS, you will not get the cancellation email.  See How do I turn on messages in Ride with GPS?

I RSVPed but now I can’t go. How do I cancel?

Removing your RSVP is as simple as pressing “remove me”. The “Your RSVP: Yes remove me” appears in the same place as the “RSVP” or “I Participated” links.

How do I find out when a ride is cancelled?

If you RSVP in Ride with GPS, you will get an email if the ride is cancelled (unless you have messages in Ride with GPS turned off.  See How do I turn on messages in Ride with GPS?.)  If you did not RSVP, you can find the event in Ride with GPS and see if the ride event name is prefixed with CANCELLED.  See How do I find out about rides?

How do I turn on messages in Ride with GPS?

Email messaging is on by default in Ride with GPS but if you have turned it off, you can turn it back on by going to your settings  select Preferences and make sure the New messages box is checked

Do I need the Ride with GPS app on my phone?

No.  The app has two primary functions: it will track your rides much like Strava and it does a good job of turn-by-turn directions to follow the predefined route of a ride, including audio cues -- so, if you don’t have a bike computer that does turn by turn, this is a good substitute.

How can I RSVP on my phone?

Unfortunately, you cannot RSVP from the Ride with GPS app.  You can, however, use your phone browser to access ridewithgps.com and do it there. See How do I find out about rides? It’s basically the same with a little more scrolling on the small format.

How can I access information in the old forums?

The club is exploring ways of maintaining the information in the old forums.  For now, you can access them just as you always have.  When we complete the transition we will provide an update. If there is any content you really want, you should make a copy now.

I don’t see my question answered here; how do I get help?

If you don’t see your question answered here, you can either post a question to the Inquiry category of the WCC Private Group (see How can I get to the forums?) or just send an email to info@waterloocyclingclub.ca
