Symmetry Butterflies

Ms. Tessa's Instructional Video

(For this project you will need some type of art material that can transfer. Paint works best, but if you don’t have any you can use graphite (pencil) or even get creative and paint with coffee!)

  1. Fold a piece of paper in half horizontally.
  2. Open the paper and paint a vertical line right in the crease. The line should not go all the way to the top or bottom of the paper.
  3. At the top of the line only on ONE HALF of the paper draw the top wing extending it to the corner of the paper
  4. At the bottom of the line draw the lower wing, but make it more rounded than the previous wing.
  5. Make sure your paint is still wet. Fold the paper back shut.
  6. Once paper is folded rub it with your hands so the paint transfers to the other side.
  7. Open your paper to reveal your entire butterfly. Now you can neaten it up and add details.
  8. Research a type of butterfly that appeals to you and use it as your inspiration for your details and color choices.
  9. Take a photo of your project and include the name of the butterfly you used (Mine would be “Swallowtail”) email your photo to me @ tessa.vanravenswaay@k12.sd.us

1. Cut or tear a sheet of paper in half horizontally.

2. Fold the paper in half hamburger style.

3. Fold the paper in half hamburger style again.

4. Fold the paper in half hamburger style one more time.

5. On the small piece of folded up paper, draw 2 half people.. One on the left side of the paper, one on the right side of the paper, touching hands in the middle.

6. Cut along the half people, making sure they stay connected at the hands.

7. Gently open up your people garland.

8. Decorate each person to have diversity and different personalities.

9. Take a photo of your art and email it to me at tessa.vanravenswaay@k12.sd.us

Thankful Hearts 

Ms. Tessa's Instructional Video

1. Fold a sheet of paper in half.

2. On the folded edge, draw half of a heart shape. (Or more) While the paper is folded, cut on the drawn line to make a cutout heart.

3. Place the cutout heart on a new sheet of paper. Color on the edges of the cutout and extend the coloring on to the new piece of paper. Once you’ve colored around the whole cutout, remove the template. Fill the rest of the page with color and / or decorations.

4. Inside the heart, write a note of gratitude to all of the members of our community that you are thankful for during this time.

5. Email a photo of your art to me @ tessa.vanravenswaay@k12.sd.us or to mary.brunick@k12.sd.us if Ms. Brunick is your teacher.

Read an online book AND Complete Getting Started and Lesson 1 at the following website: Imagineering!  (You don’t need to physically write down answers to questions, just think about them!  Let your imagination go wild!  Would you ever want to be an Imagineer?!)

Sun Stone Project

Read This short article about the Aztec sun stone.

1. Find a round object about the size of a sheet of paper. Trace it in the middle of the paper.

2. In the center of your circle, trace a smaller circle using something round ( like a cup )

3. In the smaller circle draw a face.

1. Draw a small dot in the center of your paper.

2. Use something with a straight edge to draw straight diagonal lines extending from the dot all the way around the page.

3. Now that your paper is divided into sections (the sections look like long, skinny triangles) Make sure you have an even amount of them.  (try to have 10, 12, or 14 sections)

4. Starting near the center, use alternating arc lines. In the first section your arc will go up, in the second section your arc will go downward. Repeat until you have gone all the way around.

5. Repeat step four as a contour outlining your first wavy shape until the paper is full of alternating arcs.

6 Shade every other section of your drawing from dark to light to dark again. See picture above for reference.

7. Take a photo of  your project and email it to me @ tessa.vanravenswaay@k12.sd.us Please include your name and class number.

Objective—demonstrate the structure and the elements of music (such as rhythm, pitch, and form.)  Using a simple song, sing both in unison (all on the same part) and in a round (harmony).

 1. Sing the song Row, Row, Row Your Boat or Hot Cross Buns.

2. Teach a family member one or both of these songs.

3. Tell a family member about harmony. Harmony is when two or more pitches/notes sound at the same time.

4. Teach a friend or family member how to sing Row, Row or Hot Cross Buns in a round, starting at different times.

2020 SFSD Elementary 4th Grade E Learning Board

This is an optional Learning Board. Families can access and use as they wish.

  • Students choose at least one activity per day from each subject area column (Math, Reading, Writing, Science/Social and Specials        ). 
  • Dreambox, Investigations games, and Read to Self are options to utilize each day.        
  • Students should have a physical notebook or a folder where they can take notes or complete the daily activities.  As you will see, some other activities will have to be completed in a document called “ Mi Diario” (posted in Google Classroom). Those activities will be underlined in the chart.

1) Fold a sheet of paper into three even sections.

 

2) Without tracing draw a circle, rather large in the center of 2 of the sections.

3) In the last section, draw a cube. Start with a square. Draw a dot in the center of that square. Use the dot as a starting point for another square. Connect the two squares corner to corner to make a cube.

4) Using a pencil, shade one of the circles to make it look like a 3D sphere. One side of the circle should be very light, the other should be very dark, but the change should be gradual.

5) Shade the other circle using the same technique but with a crayon or colored pencil.

6) Shade the cube. The cube should have 3 visible sides. One side should be very dark, one side should be lighter, and the last side should be very light.

  1. With paper, pencil or pen, write an 8 beat rhythm pattern using rhythms we have studied in class.  
  2. Use quarter notes (ta or “pole” ), eighth notes (“light-ning” ), quarter rest, 16th notes 16th+ 8th (“telephone”) and 8th+16th (“woodpecker”).
  3. Practice it then clap it for a friend or family member.
