Updated automatically every 5 minutes

Dear BHS/MS Students and Parents,

Welcome Back:

I am delighted to welcome every one of you back to our school as we embark on a brand-new 23-24 academic year. I am overflowing with anticipation and excitement for the opportunity to serve our community for another year.

To our returning students, welcome back! You are the heart and soul of our school, and your presence fills these halls with energy and enthusiasm. I hope you had a restful and rejuvenating break and are ready to dive into another year of growth, learning, and discovery. Remember, each new year is a fresh start—a chance to set new goals, embrace new opportunities, and build upon your previous achievements.

To the parents and guardians, thank you for entrusting us with the education and well-being of your children. I understand your invaluable role in their academic lives, and we are committed to working hand in hand with you to ensure their success. Your involvement, support, and partnership are essential in creating a nurturing and thriving school community. I would also like to welcome any new students and families joining our school this year. Breckenridge is thrilled to have you as part of our community.

I welcome and value your positive energy and dedication to excellence. Our skilled and devoted staff are planning and preparing for your child(ren). An all-hands-on-deck approach is necessary to provide your children with experiences that allow them to take the next steps in their educational journey.

Open House:

We are excited to have you join us for a sixth-twelfth grade open house on Wednesday, August 16th, from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

During the open house, we encourage you to walk your daily schedule, meet our new staff members, sign up for PowerSchool, and see the updated bond work. Teachers will be at their classroom doors to greet you, answer questions, help with lockers, and provide you with information specific to the classes they teach.

We will also have a school safety presentation looping in the Library/Media Center (LMC), and OK2SAY informational handouts will be available. The Counselor will also be available to answer any scheduling questions or handle add/drops. Please bring your schedules to practice locker combinations and find your classrooms.

New Staff:

Each year brings positive change and often includes a few additions to our staff. We welcome Mrs. Angela Stephens back to Breckenridge as our Agriscience instructor and FFA advisor. Mrs. Kim Ostrander will be back, teaching Middle School English. Ms. Sydney Willman has joined our building as a student teacher working with Ms. Hesse, but she will take over for Mrs. Ostrander when she finishes. Mr. Jack Poling will join us as our HS/MS Math teacher.

Additional Student Supports:

Mr. Kurt Peters is returning for another year as our Behavioral Building Specialist. Mr. Peters helps to monitor our RTC processes in conjunction with our Dean of Students, which includes positive referrals with our PBIS initiative. We will also have Ms. Koryn Walden back as a mental health specialist from the Gratiot Integrated Health Network (GIHN) a few days a week. Mrs. Mary Root will provide our students with Academic Support through the first semester of the school year.

Building Update:

You may have noticed numerous bond-related maintenance and construction projects if you drove past the school or utilized our outdoor facilities this summer. Improvements to HS/MS include; electrical work, HVAC system, waxed tile floors, weight room/multi-purpose room, HS gym flooring, etc

Communication:

Have you downloaded our Breckenridge Community Schools app? If you haven't, download it on Android or iPhone. Teachers will update, post, and provide curriculum via Google Classroom and Rooms. We do our best to keep you informed by delivering newsletters and updating our website, Facebook, and the bulletin in PowerSchool.

Parent/Student Handbook

A few minor policy changes are reflected in the handbook, and Acceptable Use Policies, which can be accessed through our school website. Please read through those changes before coming to school. Most notably, a permission form must be filled out by any student who wishes to bring their laptop/Chromebook to school and approved by the principal.

PowerSchool:

Our staff uses PowerSchool for grading, data collection, and student information. At the beginning of the school year, logging in and accessing the Parent Portal for PowerSchool is crucial. Students also need to understand how to access the portal.
