CGS-1060 INTRODUCTION TO MICROCOMPUTER USAGE

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course provides 21st century skills required for personal, academic and professional success. Students will learn essential computer concepts, skills and how to use popular applications. Topics include word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, email, Internet, security, and general programming concepts. The course satisfies the college’s computer competency requirement.

If you wish to install Microsoft Office 2016 in your personal computer, MDC offers this software and cloud storage free of charge to its students: http://www.mdc.edu/office365/

COMPUTER ACCESS: You will need to use a computer running Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office to complete the chapters and will need internet access to complete SIMNET training units, grader projects, and practice tests. The Technology Department Study Center in Room 9103 provides computer access for students enrolled in this computer class. Students can use the computers in the classroom only during their class time. You will be asked to provide a current MDC ID and validated schedule when you enter the Study Center. The hours of operation are posted on the door of Room 9103. Since you can use the Study Center computers, “broken computers” and “internet down” are not valid excuses!

CLASS REQUIREMENTS (*SIMNET required for all exams, grader projects, and trainings):

Performance Exams: Each performance exam consists of multiple tasks that measure your skills in a Microsoft Office application. The textbook may be used for reference but there will be a time limit for completing the exam.

Exam Makeup Policy: Only one missed objective exam and one missed SIMNet performance exam may be made up. Missed exams can only be made up during the final exam time. No retakes of exams are allowed. No exceptions will be made.

Grader Projects: Grader projects will be assigned in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and/or Access. The starting materials for these projects are downloaded, completed in the live Office 2016 application, and then submitted for grading in SIMNET.  No makeups of grader projects, trainings, and/or practice exams.

SIMNet Training Units/Practice Exams: No makeups of SIMNet trainings, and/or practice exams.

GRADING PERCENTAGES:

        Performance Exams        50%

            Grader Projects        30%

        Training Units        20%


GRADING SCALE: (exams, projects, trainings, practice tests, & final grade)

        A        =        100-90

        B        =          89-80

        C        =          79-70

        D        =          69-60

        F        =          59 or below

COURSE POLICIES:

Attendance Policy: Roll will be taken regularly and students are expected to attend class. If for some reason you are absent, you are still responsible for the material you missed. The instructor reserves the right to drop any student who misses two or more performance exams or is absent more than two classes during the semester.

Academic Dishonesty Procedure: Students are to work individually during exams. Talking or helping each other during an exam is prohibited. If the prohibited behavior continues, the student may receive a lower grade or an “F” for the course.  Copying Grader Project files from another student is prohibited; both students, the author and whoever copied, will earn zero. 

Course Withdrawal: Last day to drop the class is November 4, 2019. If you decide to withdraw, it is your responsibility to do so by this date. If you stop attending this class, you may be dropped from the course without notice and your record will show a grade of WI (Instructor Withdrawal).

Incomplete Grade: An "Incomplete" grade or “I” grade is only available at the discretion of the instructor as a result of a documented emergency that prohibits your completing the course. You will only be considered for an incomplete grade if it is beyond the course withdrawal date and you are passing the course at the time of the request.
