New "WCTA Closet" Open for Back to School "Shopping"

Thanks to the WCTA Early Career Educators (ECE) Committee, this year, new WCTA members who are joining the WCPS teaching ranks for 2021-2022 can “shop” for free, donated supplies at the WCTA Office.

Since the opening on Friday, August 13, dozens of new teachers have benefited from the donated supplies. In response to a need for flexible hours, the WCTA Closet now has extended its hours and will be open this week through Thursday, August 26, from 4 to 7.

Any WCTA member can also visit the closet at other times by appointment. Contact WCTA President Neil Becker ( or WCTA Vice-President Carol Mowen ( for more information. (See PHOTOS for an overview of available inventory.)

The committee, led by WCTA member Giovanna Papa, opened on Friday, August 13, for a “Black Friday” event. By noon, almost a dozen new teachers had filled bags with books, math manipulatives, flash cards, incentive materials, learning games, and various office supplies.

Papa, who has recently been appointed to the Maryland State Education Association’s statewide ECE Committee, called for the donations over the summer and was overwhelmed with the generous response of WCTA teachers in providing donations of supplies and materials. The committee also coordinated a raffle for all new WCTA members for a WCTA gift basket. In addition, the local ECE committee provides regular opportunities for new hires to gather for social events and support throughout the year.
