6th Grade Math: The students are being introduced to Algebra. They are practicing getting the variable alone. They can successfully add and subject to solve for the variable. Now we will move on to multiplying and dividing to find the value of the missing number. Religion: Our focus in class has been on the Liturgy of the Word. We have discussed the different parts and how they are derived from Scripture. The students will soon be taking a test over Unit 1. Science: The class continues to study ecosystems. They explored micro ecosystems (in pond, lake and river water) last week. This week they learned about succession and symbiosis in ecosystems. Social Studies: Students have been learning about migration and push/pull factors that cause people to move to different area. They analyzed An American Tale to learn more about this topic. Literature/Vocab: Students are reading The Pearl by John Steinbeck. We are having discussions about greed and how family should be more important than money. Novel projects are due October 1st. English/Writing: In class, we have been working on how to write a narrative in different point of view. We first discussed how each point of view is written, and now the students are applying it to their own work. Other News:
7th Grade Math: Students are proving that equations are true, converting words into equations, and combining like terms. They are working hard. Chapter test will be next week. Religion: This past week, we have been talking about saints and the good that they have done in their lives. We then discussed how we can lead more saintly lives based the saints we have been reading about. Science: The class wrapped up the unit on classification and dichotomous keys. They will begin to explore cells next week. Social Studies: The class completed and shared their Native American tribes project this week. This gave them an understanding of how people arrived and lived in the early Americas. They will be discovering early exploration soon.
Literature/Vocab: Students are reading Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt. Would you want to live forever? We are having some great conversations, and they are enjoying the story. Novel projects are due October 1st. A few have turned them in already, and they look great! English/Writing: The students are wrapping up their personal narratives by editing their papers and having others edit their rough draft. Each time they students edit their paper, they are editing for a different purpose. Other News:
8th Grade Math: Students wrapped up the chapter on absolute value and inequalities. We are beginning Chapter 2 focusing on Rational Numbers. Practice will be done daily in class. We have discussed that the more you practice, the easier it gets, just like sports. Religion: In class, we have been discussing God’s love for one us, how our love for one another should look like, friendship love, and married love. We have been having some great deep discussions about this topic. Science: The class wrapped up the atoms and bonding unit this week. They also began to investigate chemical equations and how to read and balance those equations. This will lead to some classroom experiments and observations. Social Studies: The class have been learning about the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. They have analyzed the Bill of Rights as well as the other Amendments this week. Literature/Vocab: The class is continuing to read stories with twists and suspense. They are making good predictions and picking out the foreshadowing hints. Novel projects are due October 1st. English/Writing: The students are working on their final edits of their American and Me essays. Before I make final edits to their papers, the students will be bringing their papers home to have either an older sibling, family friend, parent, or a relative edit their paper for them. Other News: There are a few permission slips still out for the field trip to Grand Haven next Friday. Please return them ASAP. Mrs. Teegardin will be contacting parent volunteers early next week with details about the trip.
6th-8th Other News: - Grand Valley State University’s Regional Math and Science Center is hosting an Engineering Our World Saturday Day camp on October, 20 2018. The cost is only $10 and includes a t-shirt, lunch and snacks. It looks like an amazing learning experience for students.
