This report is submitted to meet the requirements of the School Act of the Province of Alberta and the contents are a true and accurate portrayal of the activities of the School Council:

Duty to Report to the Board

The School Act of the Province of Alberta Regulation 171/98 - School Councils Regulation requires that School Advisory Councils:

1. Provide by June 15th of each year a report:

  1. summarizing the activities of the school council in the school year; and

a. including a financial statement relating to money handled by the school council in the school year, if any

  1. A school council must retain at the school a copy of the minutes for each meeting of the school council and make them available to the board upon request.

  1. A school council must retain the minutes for each meeting of the school council for at least seven years

To assist with the above requirement the Board of Trustees of Fort McMurray Public School District has prepared the attached form for submission to the Board. Please complete and submit to the Superintendent of Schools prior to June 15.

Achievements or Accomplishments:

(These items may be considered for inclusion in the District and/or School Annual Results Report)

*We supported our staff with numerous donations

*We assisted Beacon Hill by collecting donations for their snack program

*We assisted the school with the Prom Project

*We discussed a resolution to take to ASCA regarding credit for athletes on sports teams. (This didn’t end up happening, but, in partnership with the school, we’re looking into whether or not it is possible.)

*We created an annual plan which we used to guide us in our efforts *There was some discussion about the diminished quality and number of choices of food available at the cafeteria. The change has not been popular with the students.

*We attempted to support efforts of ELL students by looking for parent volunteers to help with projects as laid out by the ELL teacher. Unfortunately, we were unable to secure adequate volunteers.

*We worked on ways to improve communication with parents through a monthly update following each meeting, and sending out a request for agenda items.

*We looked at a new parent teacher interview process and it seemed to show some success

*We discussed the potential of an alternative calendar *We discussed the upcoming School Board elections *We evaluated our effectiveness as a council

*Chair encouraged parents to discuss the Minister’s Youth Council with their students

*Discussed the ASCA issue resolutions and sent our proxy vote with another school


2. Council Development Opportunities:

*We strongly encouraged members of our council to attend the Joint Networks meetings as a way of developing their understanding of educational issues and concepts at a district level.

We strongly encouraged members to attend the Alberta School *Councils Association’s AGM as a way of developing their understanding of educational issues and concepts at a provincial level.

*Attendance, as always, is a problem

b. How can the Board better assist the operation of School Councils? *We appreciate the continued emphasis that the Board and the District place on parental engagement.

*We appreciate the Board’s support of School Councils by supporting the attendance of council members at the ASCA AGM. *We appreciate the Board’s support of school councils by encouraging administrators and trustees to attend the AGM with the parents.

This is to certify that the Westwood Community High School School Council did not handle any money.
