FIRE, EARTHQUAKE & EMERGENCY EVACUATION
NAG 5 Health & Safety
Fire and earthquake drills will occur once per term. The fire service will be contacted 14 days before and invited to attend.
Emergency procedures will be displayed in all classrooms.
The evacuation signal for any emergency is the continuous ringing of the school bell. In the event of a power failure the hand bell will be used.
The warden is the office assistant.
The warden will wear a high vis vest.
The Warden takes out
The Warden stands in the front in the centre of the assembled children to distribute and collect in the class lists and pencils.
Completes check sheet (Appendix1) with Office Manager’s assistance.
Check the Quiet Room, Interview Room, Toilets, Staffroom and shuts all doors in the admin area.
Checks for the source of the alarm.
Fire confirmed, ring 111
No fire, return to assembly area, confirms the checklist then gives all clear.
The Office Manager will turn off the bell once everyone has been checked off and has been directed to by the Principal.
Return to class when Principal has given the all clear.
Any injuries or missing children will be reported to the Principal who will take appropriate action.
Appropriate action in this instance could be any of the following:
In the event of an earthquake the children are to crouch under a desk or table at the teachers command “This is an earthquake, get under your desks!” If children are outside when an earthquake occurs the teacher responsible should ensure they get clear of all buildings and tall trees and any other life-threatening structure. They should gather in groups in the open spaces and remain seated until the All Clear had been given.
