FIRE, EARTHQUAKE & EMERGENCY EVACUATION

        NAG 5 Health & Safety

Fire and earthquake drills will occur once per term. The fire service will be contacted 14 days before and invited to attend.

Emergency procedures will be displayed in all classrooms.

The evacuation signal for any emergency is the continuous ringing of the school bell.  In the event of a power failure the hand bell will be used.

Visitors

  1. Go to assembly point on large basketball court
  2. Escort the children you are working with to their class at the assembly point if applicable.
  3. Check your name off with the warden.

Warden

The warden is the office assistant.

The warden will wear a high vis vest.

The Warden takes out

The Warden stands in the front in the centre of the assembled children to distribute and collect in the class lists and pencils.

The Warden assists the principal to check off the Check sheet attached.

Principal

Takes out the Emergency Evacuation Sheet.

Completes check sheet (Appendix1) with Warden’s assistance.

Gives the all clear.


Teachers

  1. Instruct children to leave the class in an orderly fashion and walk to the assembly point.
  2. Check your toilets/shut all doors.
  3. Children sit in lines at the assembly point.
  4. Send a child to the warden for a class list and pencil
  5. Take the roll
  6. Send the roll back to the warden.

Part-time teachers

  1. Escort the children you are working with to their class at the assembly place.
  2. Check your name off with the warden.
  3. You may be required to assist with extra tasks otherwise wait with the class you are working with.

Teacher Aides

  1. Walk with the children you are working with to the assembly point.
  2. Check yourself off with the warden.
  3. You may be required to assist with extra tasks, otherwise wait with the class you are working with.

Caretaker

  1. Bring keys to the assembly point.
  2. Check your name off with the warden.

Office Manager

  1. Ring the fire Service on 8010812 ½ hour before the evacuation tell them “we are having a fire drill at time…………..”
  2. Notify Kindy of any drills.
  3. Ring 111 when bells are activated telling them it is a trial.
  4. Take the First Aid Supplies, Emergency Contact folder and  Gate Key. Check the Quiet Room, Interview Room, Toilets, Staffroom and shuts all doors in the admin area.
  5. Lock the front entrance door.
  6. Open the gate by the hall for the fire truck.

On Completion

The Office Manager will turn off the bell once everyone has been checked off and has been directed to by the Principal.

Return to class when Principal has given the all clear.

Any injuries or missing children will be reported to the Principal who will take appropriate action.
Appropriate action in this instance could be any of the following:

Earthquake

In the event of an earthquake the children are to crouch under a desk or table at the teachers command “This is an earthquake, get under your desks!”  If children are outside when an earthquake occurs the teacher responsible should ensure they get clear of all buildings and tall trees and any other life-threatening structure.  They should gather in groups in the open spaces and remain seated until the All Clear had been given.
