COMMITTEE UPDATES

Art Lit (Kristi Nelson and Renee Nepokey)

  • Art Lit is going well! We recently discovered that Art Lit has a district distributed laptop to use during the lessons which is an improvement from borrowing the teacher's device.
  • In November, also known as Native American Heritage Month, the students studied Louie Gong, a current Northwest Native from the Noonsack tribe. He is an inspiring and talented artist who got his start by decorating his own pair of Van shoes and later grew a business and Native Owned company Eighth Generation. While in their Science classrooms, the Tumwater students decorated their own pair of canvas shoes with watercolors and truly got to express their creative selves. These projects will be featured in the cafeteria display cases in time for conferences next week so we'd like to encourage students/families to take a look and find their projects.
  • In January/February, we are going back in time to the late 1800's to learn about Piet Mondrian, a Dutch artist who is known for his abstract art of geometric shapes, straight lines and primary colors. The Mondrian lessons will take place in the Language Arts classrooms. This week we are in the 6th grade classrooms. Next week 7th graders will get their turn. We skip a week for Middle School Conferences. Finally, the 8th graders will have their chance to soak in the Mondrian lesson and produce a piece inspired by his art.
  • We were pleased with the number of people who expressed interest in Art Lit earlier this year. Sixth grade classes show the most volunteer interest in sign-ups.
  • We hope that with reminder emails, other volunteers can offer time to support their child's class or another class as it's always better to have more adult support.
  • In April, we will have the training for our final artist of the year, Alexandra Nechita.

OBOB (Kristi Nelson)

  • Kristi is working with Matt to get the battles/tournament scheduled for this year. There are 6 teams this year. 4 of the 6 teams are 6th graders (one team is 8th graders, and the other team is 7th grade with one 6th grader). Tournament will be done by end of February.

Staff Appreciation (Lauren, Jen, Alexandra)

  • We hosted a coffee cart on 1/17 for staff development
  • Staff Appreciation has two upcoming events:
  • 2/5 - Winter Conferences Dinner – Catered by Chipotle
  • 2/14 - "Spread the Love" Parent donation event
  • FYI: The Teacher head count has increased by 10 vs last year (Teacher count now 70 vs), the total staff number has increased to over 100. Staff appreciation has challenges finding affordable meals to feed this larger number of staff while also catering to specific dietary needs. Food pricing has increased since last year and so has the number of Staff.

TEMPO (Jo Salicos-Murphy)

  • TEMPO is going well this year, though we are struggling a little with recruiting new volunteers.
  • We are getting started on our big Play-a-thon event, which will be Monday April 7th.  When it comes time, we would appreciate PTO support to share about this fundraiser.
  • Current projects include designing parade tshirts for 7th and 8th grader band students, which will be paid for by TEMPO.  We are also working to get a 'storefront' set up with Portland Embroidery to offer fun spirit apparel for students and families.  Please let us know if we need to have any conversations with the board before doing this.
  • We appreciate Laura's help in placing an order of extra band books for the classroom.  We have also set up a $1000 expense line for the Jazz Band program and are paying for their attendance at an upcoming festival.

8th Grade Celebration (Brittney Pineda)

  • Had first meeting with the Assistant Principals and Laura this week. Brittney got a tour of the PTO storage closet and is hoping to recycle the available decor for this years event/theme/photo booth etc.
  • Anyone interested in helping should email her at celebrate8@tumwaterpto.org.

GRANT REQUEST #2:

Name of applicant: Benjamin Lloyd

Email: benjamin_lloyd@beaverton.k12.or.us

What is your official connection to TMS? Design Teacher, LITT

Proposed purchase or activity: Software for the CTE Future Labs

Amount of funding requested (be specific and itemize all costs, including shipping and installation): Air Manager iPad software for Flight Simulator (we had different software that stopped being supported, update to add back our instrument panel on the flight simulator) - $22.99
Microsoft Flight Simulator (We currently use XPlane and would like to add more options with MS Flight Simulator) - $69.99
Lightburn Pro Laser Cutter Software (This is the software that we use to run the Laser Cutter in the Future Labs, I currently own the license because I purchased for my at home laser cutter and have also installed on my school laptop. I would like to purchase and install on a computer in the lab so that it can be used outside of my personal / home license.) - $199
Total Software Request - $292

Ongoing expenses related to purchase, including maintenance, and proposed funding source: No anticipated ongoing maintenance for these items. We do fund a lot of things in the future labs using district-allotted money but software has always been a bit of a hangup for purchasing, the district tends to deal more with volume licensing for use on the student devices and it has been pretty hard to purchase software like this for the CTE Lab since they won't reimburse and we're requesting individual / one-off type software purchases.

Goals that will be achieved, including benefits to students, staff, and volunteers. How does the purchase or activity help meet or maintain education or enrichment goals set by the Beaverton School District, Tumwater Middle School, or the Tumwater PTO?  The flight Simulator is one of the more popular modules in our 8th grade curriculum, likewise the Aviation after school club has seen a dramatic increase this year and there are 20-30 individuals benefiting directly from the functioning flight simulator.
Additionally, the laser cutter is one of our more advanced manufacturing tools that we use at the school. Most high-school CTE programs in the district employ the use of a laser cutter but we are one of only a few to use at the middle school level. It is an invaluable tool in the 7th grade design curriculum where the students learn CAD and then prototype things out of wood like our RC Car builds, Microbit Solutions, and prototyped Video Game Controllers.

Grades or demographic impacted: Primarily Grades 7-8 but some reach to 6th grade through the after school club. 250+ students in Design. Thanks for your consideration and all you do!

GRANT REQUEST #3:

Name of applicant: Mikaela Gladstone-Saucedo

Email: mikaela_gladstone-saucedo@beaverton.k12.or.us

What is your official connection to TMS?: Drama Teacher/Program Director

Proposed purchase or activity: Costumes & Props for Beetlejuice (replacing that which was lost in the storage room leak.) I pre-bought several items during the past show that were intended for use in Beetlejuice. All of it had to be thrown out when the water fountains in the gym leaked through the wall, as they were stored in cardboard boxes. My intention is to charge a small costume fee for actors in the production, because all of the costumes need to be bought anyway - but this loss sets us back about $800 for just costumes - not including the new storage totes that I would like to purchase.

Amount of funding requested (be specific and itemize all costs, including shipping and installation): 10 Plastic Storage Totes (Home Depot - $9.98 each). We didn't lose these, but I want to make sure this doesn't happen again.
9 Cheerleader Costumes (Approx. $20 per costume)
10 Beetlejuice Clone Costumes (Approx. $30 per costume)
Specialty Makeup (Beetlejuice & Clone makeup + Miss Argentina) (Approx $40 total)
Miss Argentina Dress ($40)
Wigs (12 wigs were lost) (Approx $30 each)
--
$1,019.80 total.
--
All items are purchased from Amazon. My intention is to package the props and costumes up after the production, and rent them to other schools in the nation. We are currently doing this with the Puffs props and costumes.

Ongoing expenses related to purchase, including maintenance, and proposed funding source: N/A. The plastic storage totes are water-tight and ensure that another leak will not ruin props or costumes.

Goals that will be achieved, including benefits to students, staff, and volunteers. How does the purchase or activity help meet or maintain education or enrichment goals set by the Beaverton School District, Tumwater Middle School, or the Tumwater PTO?: We have a very robust theatre program at Tumwater, and I'm proud to have kept building it for the past four years. We produce very high-quality productions. However, part of that is reliant on the stock of costumes/props/set pieces that we have built and maintained over the years. Recently, due to a leak in the Aux Gym/storage room we lost two whales (giant dumpsters) full of costumes and props that molded. We are trying to replace and recoup the loss of those items, many of which were to be used in Beetlejuice.

Grades or demographic impacted: We usually have around 80+ students from all grades participate in each production.

GRANT REQUEST #5

Name of applicant: Jordan Rick

Email: jordan_rick@beaverton.k12.or.us

What is your official connection to TMS?: Art Teacher

Proposed purchase or activity: Purchase of clay for 8th grade students to make an animal shaped jar using multiple types of building techniques. Students would be choosing an animal that is endangered or facing extinction, studying the different textures and colors of the animal and be taught different methods for achieving those textures on a clay surface. They would also be studying the environmental impacts and why that animal is endangered or facing extinction. Students would be guided through multiple methods of hand building, including pinch pot and slab building. They would also learn how to attach clay to build up any details such as noses, tails, wings, etc. We would study the art of Julie Clements and Julie Wilson, both are ceramicist artists specializing in endangered animal sculpture.

Amount of funding requested (be specific and itemize all costs, including shipping and installation): All supplies purchased through Georgies in Portland, no shipping will be needed for local pick up.

TRAIL MIX c4-7 CLAY- 100 lbs- $ 107.00

GLOSS STONEWARE c6 SAMPLE SET- 6 sets of 31, 4 oz. bottles- $ 1,090.80

Total $ 1,197.80

Ongoing expenses related to purchase, including maintenance, and proposed funding source: No ongoing expenses required beyond initial purchase would be necessary.

Goals that will be achieved, including benefits to students, staff, and volunteers. How does the purchase or activity help meet or maintain education or enrichment goals set by the Beaverton School District, Tumwater Middle School, or the Tumwater PTO?  Students would be introduced to a material that is not often available to them unless in a specialized class. They would learn design and aesthetic development, along with more practical skills such as time management, attention to detail and a sense of touch and control. All of this links to fine motor skills.

Students would be studying beyond clay and looking at their animal through a real would connection. Why is their animal facing extinction? Why is it endangered? What conservation efforts are being implemented to protect endangered species? What are the impacts of losing biodiversity due to endangered species decline? This exploration would help students to make a real world connection and see the project beyond the classroom. The final projects would be displayed with an explanation for other students and staff to see, giving them knowledge on the animal and what they could to help.

Grades or demographic impacted: 8th grade students, ~80

GRANT REQUEST #6

Name of applicant: Tiffany Tran-Parta

Email: tiffany_tran-parta@beaverton.k12.or.us

What is your official connection to TMS?: 6-8 grade design teacher

Proposed purchase or activity: Students will research and learn about the uses of drones in various industries and fields. They will create design briefs in their notebooks using book creator. They will learn how to fly a drone and take pictures and videos in ways that allow them to be used to generate 3-D maps and models using the software from Dronelink. We would like to get 4 more drones to be able to use them in the same day with 2 classes of 8th graders. Each class can use 4 drones as the ones used by the first class will have to rest, cool down, recharge after use. We got 4 drones a couple years ago from PTO to use with our 8th graders. They really got excited about learning to fly them and using them to capture aerial images for use in photo grammetry.

Amount of funding requested (be specific and itemize all costs, including shipping and installation): https://docs.google.com/document/d/19WxIyGPRcZNTQHVi4hBTVRh3hBoNl--P7-2_gcnvjZY/edit?usp=sharing

$2958.72.

We would be happy to accept any amount that you would help with this project.

Ongoing expenses related to purchase, including maintenance, and proposed funding source: We will be using our technology budget to buy replacement items such as propellers and batteries if they need to be replaced.

Goals that will be achieved, including benefits to students, staff, and volunteers. How does the purchase or activity help meet or maintain education or enrichment goals set by the Beaverton School District, Tumwater Middle School, or the Tumwater PTO?: Students will use the design cycle to research and document their use of drones to transform 2-D maps into 3-D maps. They will also use Bookcreator to capture pictures and photos to be analyzed in class. Our students love doing these types of hands-on projects as they are of high interest and most have not done something like this before. Sherpas or student helpers will be trained first and then they will help others in small groups to fly the drones outside, thereby also learning to collaborate and teach others. This project will cover all 4 of the MYP design standards.

Grades or demographic impacted: 8th grade (~75-80 students) and potentially 7th grade ( ~70 students)

Date Needed: February 17, 2025
