Overview

Surveillance for the 2018-2019 influenza season officially began on September 30, 2018, and will run through May 18, 2019. The Colorado Flu Report is published weekly on Tuesdays to provide a concise and up-to-date summary of influenza activity in Colorado. Current surveillance activities include monitoring the following:

  • Hospitalizations due to influenza
  • Influenza-like illness (ILI) visits at outpatient facilities
  • Positivity trends of influenza testing activity by sentinel hospital labs
  • Outbreaks of influenza in long-term care facilities (LTCF)
  • Influenza-associated pediatric deaths
  • Pneumonia and influenza mortality

Summary for the week ending Oct. 13, 2018.

  • Two influenza-associated hospitalizations were reported since the official beginning of the 2018-19 season.
  • Prior to the official start of the 2018-19 season, 1 outbreak in a long term care facility and 6 influenza-associated hospitalizations were reported in the month of September.
  • Influenza-like illness (ILI) reported by Kaiser Permanente (which includes providers from the North Central, Northeast, Northwest, South and South Central regions of the state) increased from 3.03% to 3.65%. ILI is below baseline levels.
  • Sentinel hospital labs (20 of 23 reporting) tested 797 specimens and 3 (0.4%) were positive for influenza.
  • No influenza-associated pediatric deaths have been reported thus far.
