Day 1

Reading

We are starting a mini-unit on poetry! We will identify the different elements of poetry. Rhythm and rhymes are important characteristics of poetry. Read In May. As you are reading, clap the rhyming words. After reading, listen to Chicken Soup with Rice. Can you hear and identify the rhymes?

Writing

Listen to Down By the Bay. Can you make up another rhyme for this song? For example: Have you ever seen a dragon pulling a wagon? Try to write at least 3 different rhymes.

Experiment with making a ramp out of materials at your house.  Get creative..cardboard, wood, toys, prop items up.  See if a ball will roll down your ramp.  What can you do to make the ball roll faster?  Slower?

Reading

Listen to ALLITERATION by Tammy Loveless. Alliteration is when the beginning sound is repeated. Now listen to some tongue twisters. Peter Piper and She Sell Seashells.Can you identify the alliteration?  

Writing

Now try writing a sentence using alliteration. For example: lumpy lobster landed on my leg. Try writing 3 sentences with alliteration about animals. Here are some animal suggestions to get you started:

Hippo, wolf, dog, snake, tiger, jellyfish.

Listen to Home by Phillip Phillips. Songs are poems put to music. Another important element of poetry is rhythm, or beat. Can you clap to the beat of this song? (It’s faster than you think!)

Writing

Write a cinquain poem about your home.

First line: 1 word that names your home

2nd line: 2 words that describe your home.

3rd line: 3 actions that tell about your home

4th line: a phrase that tells about your home

Last line: a name you call your home

Sink and Float Experiment

Today you get to be a scientist! Gather 10-20 objects from around the house or outside.  Make a chart in your journal with two columns labeled “sink” and “float.”  Test each object and record the name of that object under the correct column.  Did more of your items sink or float?  Were there any outcomes that surprised you?

Writing

*this video has a quick tutorial at the beginning of how to fold a simple paper airplane.  I would suggest watching the video through first and then go back a second time and have your child fold the plane.

*listen for the meaning of the vocabulary words “thrust” and “lift.”    

Application: Practice flying your plane.  If you provide more thrust, does it go farther?  Does your plane have enough lift to keep it in the air for several seconds.
