City-As-School

Parent/Guardian Handbook

2021-22

16 Clarkson St New York, NY 10014 Ph: 212 337-6800

Dear CAS Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the 2020-21 school year! We are so glad you and your child are members of the City-As-School community. We recognize that this school year is unlike any other and we are functioning in a world of so many unknowns. This handbook is designed to minimize some of those unknowns. Rather than sending information piecemeal, we are compiling all information that you, the CAS parent/guardian, need to know in one place. This handbook is a living document and will be updated throughout the school year. If something is missing, please let me know.

As always, if you have any questions, concerns, suggestions please do not hesitate to contact me via email, phone call, or text message. Thank you for your continued partnership in your child’s education.

With gratitude,

Eliana Halpern

Your Child’s Core Team:

Throughout your child’s time at CAS they are linked to three people: Their advisor, CACO (College and Career) link, and guidance link. These three people make up your child’s core team.  If you do not know who your child’s advisor, CACO link, or guidance link is, contact Eliana, CAS parent coordinator. Please note, advisors, guidance links, and CACO links are available during school hours.

Advisor:

The advisor is your child’s point person for all things CAS. They facilitate Advisory Seminars, which meet once weekly. Each advisory is approximately 12-16 students, allowing for individual support and personal connections.Your child’s advisor assists with registration and provides general support and encouragement. They remain linked to your child throughout their time at CAS. Contact your child’s advisor with questions, concerns, information about your child and their progress at CAS.

CACO Link:

Team CACO (College and Career Office) helps your child create their post-secondary plan, whether it's college, to start working, join the military, or enroll in a career training program. It is never too soon to start planning! They also help with finding jobs while during high school. As CAS we are lucky to have three incredible CACO links. Contact your child’s CACO link via email to make an appointment to discuss your child’s post-secondary plans.

Guidance Link:

Guidance links support students and families with accessing resources (food, housing, and more). They are available for mental and emotional crisis support, and provide weekly mandated counselling. Our Guidance team supports school mental/emotional health campaigns. Guidance links also provide school enrollment verification letters  and transcript reviews. They remain linked to your child throughout their time at CAS. Contact your child’s guidance link if you need school enrollment verification, assistance finding resources and referrals, or for support around mental and emotional health.

In addition to your child’s Guidance link, our SAPIS (Substance Abuse Prevention and Intervention Specialist), Alex Falk, can provide support and counseling surrounding substance abuse.

Use the City-As-School Staff Directory to find contact information for your child’s advisor, CACO link, or guidance link.

Parent/Guardian Involvement:

At City-As-School we view parents and guardians as a key part of the CAS community. You know your child better than anyone, and can partner with us at CAS to ensure a successful educational experience. The following sections detail how to stay informed about general school happenings, how to stay informed about your individual child’s progress, and parent/guardian groups and events.

How to stay informed about general school happenings:

In the 2021-22 school year, key information is shared via email. To join our parent/guardian email list or add an additional email address please email Natasha, parent coordinator at Natasha@cityas.org. Most general school update emails come from Rachel, CAS principal, and Natasha, CAS parent coordinator. Additionally, you can visit the CAS Padlet for school announcements, events and important dates.

How to stay informed about your child's classes and progress:

Classwork:

Attendance & Experience Schedule: Jumprope

At CAS we use Jumprope to track attendance. You can view your child’s live attendance and determine which learning experience they are currently enrolled in on Jumprope. Detailed instructions for logging on to Jumprope linked here.

To determine your child’s schedule cross reference the schedule on Jumprope with the appropropriate bell schedule linked here: Student Schedules 2020-21 School Year.

Report Cards & Progress Towards Graduation: NYC Schools Accounts

With your NYC Schools Account (NYCSA), you will be able to view your child's information in one of ten languages on a computer, phone or tablet. View report cards (grades), progress towards graduation, and exam scores. School and classroom closures will also be communicated to parents via the NYCSA. Click here to sign up for your NYCSA. You will need an authorization code to add your child. Reach out to Eliana, parent coordinator, at Eliana@cityas.org for your authorization code.

Parent Teacher Conferences:

A parent teacher conference is a short meeting between you and your child’s teacher to talk about your child’s academic performance and experience at school. Parent teacher conferences are held four times a year. The first parent teacher conferences of the year are scheduled for 11/12/20-11/13/20 and will be held remotely via phone or video conference. Sign up information will be sent via email and a member of our reach out to parents/guardians directly to schedule your conference.

Teacher Communication:

For the most immediate feedback, reach out directly to teachers using the City-As-School Staff Directory. You can schedule an appointment, call or email with a question or concern, or just reach out to check in about your child’s progress. To find out who your child’s teachers are, check their schedule on Jumprope.

Parent Events/Groups:

There are multiple types of parent/guardian events at CAS. We welcome you to join any or all, whenever you can! Events are noted on the Calendar and meeting links are sent via email before the event.

Family Webinars

Family Webinars are informational meetings, held bi-weekly on Wednesday evenings via Zoom. There is always a time for questions at the end, and these are sometimes themed (i.e. college and career, mental and emotional health, etc.) Recordings or prior Family Webinars are linked here.

Parent Support Group

The CAS Parent Support group is an informal space to meet other parents/guardians and share your common experiences. This group is facilitated by a CAS parent and held via Zoom. Meeting days/times for the 2020-21 school year are TBD.

Parent Association

The CAS Parent Association meets once monthly and is a great way to stay involved and make a difference at CAS. Goals vary from fundraising to community building. Come to one, all, or some meetings!

City-As-School

Safety & Well-being Policies 2020-21

Updated October 1, 2020

We have new policies in place this year to help ensure the health and safety of all City-As-School community members.  It is vital that all community members respect these policies to help keep everyone safe.  We are committed to justice, equity and love and want everyone to thrive.  Anyone who doesn't follow these policies may be asked to leave the school building for the day.  Any community member can reach out to a member of our leadership team for support.

1. Entry & Home Health Checks

2. Masks for All

3. Temperature Checks

4. Physical Distancing

5. Bathroom & Hallway Use

6. Breakfast and Lunch

7. Illness during School

8. Handwashing

9. Possible Quarantine & Closure

10. Limiting shared materials in the classroom

11. Testing

COVID-19 Testing in Schools:

The Department of Education, in partnership with NYC Health + Hospitals, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and the NYC Test & Trace Corps will test a randomly selected group of staff and students in schools once per month. In our school, 20% of staff and students will be selected for weekly random testing. Weekly testing of randomly selected staff and students is a vital part of our efforts to prevent COVID-19 transmission in our buildings, because it helps identify positive COVID-19 cases when symptoms are not present. Consent to testing required to participate in blended learning and is critical in our ongoing fight against this virus and to ensure we can keep school communities in school buildings for in-person learning.

We sent home testing consent forms with our students with blended schedules. You can also consent to COVID-19 testing for their child via your NYCSA. To do so log in to your NYCSA go to Manage Account-> Consent Form. You can find more information about COVID-19 testing in schools on the DOE site linked here.

Learning Models: Remote or Blended

Students and families can choose between "blended learning" and "100% remote" learning models.  Students who choose “blended learning” attend school in our building 2 or 3 days a week and will learn remotely the rest of the days.  They attend in person on either Monday-Wednesday or Tuesday-Thursday and alternating Fridays.  They learn from home via Google Meet and Google Classroom on their remote days and can still connect with their teachers on those days. Students who choose “100% remote” learn from home every day of the week and will have both “live” and “independent” learning time via Google Meet and Google Classroom each day.

The default model is blended learning. Students and families can transition to fully remote learning at any time by completing the Learning Preference survey. Students and families can choose to be fully remote at any point but can only opt back in to the blended learning model (with in-person days) between November 2nd and November 15th, using  the Learning Preference survey. We will try to accommodate any requests to opt in to blended learning outside of that window. Please reach out to your child’s advisor, guidance link, and/or our leadership team with requests to opt in to blended learning after November 15th.
