Legacy Wall

The Legacy Wall is a permanent documentation of people that have distinguished themselves in their contributions to the club! As a living document, the Legacy Wall is inscribed with new names from each year with awards that explain their contribution to the club. Awards are listed year-by-year, as all awards are given for contributions made within the course of a specific academic year. In essence, the Legacy Wall serves as a tribute to people that have helped shape and sustain the club’s legacy as it evolves through the years.

Having begun in 2020, the Legacy Wall is incomplete in recognizing club contributions made prior to it since 1990. Those that have recollections of club experiences from this expansive duration of time are warmly invited to reach out and share their insight to help expand the club’s historical record.

Questions and Answers

How are individuals chosen to be on the Legacy Wall?

At the end of each academic year, club officers that served during that academic year are joined by the prospective club officers of the next upcoming academic year to form a committee. In this committee, officers determine whose names should be added onto the Legacy Wall for the year that just concluded.

What if someone wants to change or remove their name on the Wall?

Individuals whose names are listed on the Legacy Wall have the right to modify their name to reflect an authentic reflection of current identity or a pseudonym. If a listed individual wishes to not be named at all, their name may be omitted, but their award citation will remain.

What determines the listing order of names?

The listing order of names is determined by the following criteria, applied in sequence.

  1. Tier of Award. For recipients of the Order of Shoko, higher tiers are listed before lower tiers.
  2. Number of recipients per citation. Individuals are listed before groups, and smaller groups are listed before larger groups.
  3. Was it their last year? Individuals that conclude their membership (e.g. graduate) during a year are listed before others.
  4. Duration of service in Board. Individuals with longer, if any, service on the Board are listed before others.
  5. Alphabetical order. If all other criterions have been applied exhausted, the listing order of names is further determined by alphabetical order of last names.

What is the difference between a “canonical” and “semi-canonical” award?

All awards are given to individuals for contributions that occur during a specific academic year. A canonical award refers to one that was formally approved by the officers who actually served during the same academic year; all awards are canonical unless stated otherwise. In contrast, a semi-canonical award is one approved retroactively by officers from a later generation that did not serve during the academic year in which the award was earned. This distinction is for factual clarity in the historical record.

It should be noted that for an award to be canonical, it does not necessarily need to be bestowed during the same academic year for which it bestows. The only requirement for a canonical bestowment is that a majority of still-living people who served as officers during that respective year must approve the award. This means that, for example, a person may receive a canonical award in 2020 for a contribution they made in 2004-2005, just as long as a majority of living former officers that served in 2004-2005 approve the award at any time.

Can awards be removed retroactively?

Awards, whether canonical or semi-canonical, can be removed or restored retroactively with the approval of current officers and the approval of the Trustee(s) presiding over the Legacy Wall.

Can award citations be edited retroactively?

Citations can be edited retroactively with the approval of the Trustee(s) presiding over the Legacy Wall.
