Photography

“A lot can be told from what happens in between the main moments.” –Annie Leibovitz

Hello and welcome to Photography! This class has been designed as an introductory course to film photography, digital photography, Photoshop and using the dark room. Students in this class will gain a basic knowledge on design, composition, editing, photo production, camera operation and using the rule of thirds. Students will be allowed to go shoot outside and are encouraged to use their phone as tool along with their camera. Students will also listen to four different professional photographers on their techniques, styles and progression. This course will help guide and direct students to understand the fundamentals of photography.

-        35 mm film camera such as;

o   Canon AE-1

o   Pentax K 1,000

o   Olympus OM-1

o   Nikon F2, FE, FM, FM 2

o   Minolta

o   AVOID Canon EOS

*****THE CAMERA HAS TO ABSOLUTELY HAVE MANUAL CAPABILITIES!!!!*****

-        A 50 mm lens, this is a standard lens and works very similarly to our own eye

-       Photo Paper 8x10 size

o   Ilford Multi Grade RC (Resin Coated) is highly recommended because it dries fast and dries flat

o   AVOID Fiber Based or FB paper because it takes too long to dry and doesn’t dry flat

-       Film

o   Ilford HP 5, 400 speed film

-        This class will provide all the necessary chemicals and sleeves for contact sheets.

*** Great websites for purchasing photography equipment are Adorama, B&H, Arista, Keh.com, Usedphotopro.com, Amazon and Ebay. Be very careful using Amazon and Ebay because sometimes people will lie about the quality of equipment. Be sure to check the star rating and consumer reviews. Camera and lens together will cost anywhere from $100-$150. Before purchasing, double check with Mr. Smith or Mr. Hurwitz.

Rules and Expectations:

1.      Arrive on time and be prepared with binder, camera and phone.

2.     Respect others, teachers, and classroom.

3.     Follow directions the first time given, ask questions if you’re unsure!

4.     Use chemicals and photo materials correctly.

5.     Please remain quiet while the teacher and other students are talking.

6.     Clean up after yourself.

Consequences:

1.      First offense: Verbal Warning

2.     Second offense: Change in seating, conference with teacher

3.     Third offense: Call home, detention/office referral

Grading:

-        Students will partake in weekly “scavenger hunts” using their phone device and camera.

-        All photos taken on the student’s phone will be submitted through Google Classroom.

-        Students will be graded by using a rubric similar to the one attached at the end of the syllabus.

-        This class is easy to achieve good grade as long as assignments are completed on time and effort is being put into all work.
