Oklahoma Premiere of ‘Church & State’ to be Produced by Lawton Community Theatre

LAWTON, Okla. — The Oklahoma premiere of “Church & State” will be produced by Lawton Community Theatre Feb. 1-3 and 7-10 at the theater, 1316 NW Bell, in Lawton, Okla.

“Church & State” is a serious comedy by Jason Odell Williams centered around guns, religion and politics. Three days before his reelection, Senator Charles Whitmore has a crisis of faith when a gunman opens fire on an elementary school in his hometown of Raleigh, N.C. He makes an off-the-cuff comment to a blogger questioning his stance on guns and God, which gets leaked on social media. His devoutly Christian wife and liberal, Jewish campaign manager both try to perform damage control. “Church & State” looks at how religion influences politics and how politics has become a religion, all while being simultaneously funny, heartbreaking and uplifting.

According to the “Church & State” website, the production has been produced in 25 states since 2017, and the goal is to have productions in all 50 states by 2020. Albert Rivas, director of Lawton Community Theatre’s production of “Church & State,” believes the message of “Church & State” argues neither one side nor the other but is poignantly relevant.

“This is not a conservative agenda or a liberal agenda, this is a matter of life agenda,” Rivas said. “When our society has become desensitized to the murder of children and our legislators aren’t doing anything to fix the problem, then we need to be the ones to put this in the front of our minds. As Senator Charles Whitmore says, ‘We need a common sense approach to gun laws.’”

Productions of Lawton Community Theatre’s “Church & State” are 8 p.m. Feb. 1, 2, 7, 8, 9 and 2 p.m. Feb. 3 and 10. Tickets are $16-$24 depending on section and can be purchased by calling the theater’s box office at 580-355-1600 or at the theater’s box office, 1316 NW Bell in Lawton.
