Is anyone using a digital portfolio? What platform?

So many. Many can be adapted to do just about anything you want. Wakelet, Seesaw, Google Slides or even Flipgrid for video portfolios. Check out https://www.edutopia.org/article/tools-creating-digital-student-portfolios

I didn't understand that extension part. What is meant by an extension?

Extensions are little add-on programs that customize browsing and make curating resources a lot easier. They are cirtical in the digital curation process. Many are free. Check out extensions from Chrome https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/extensions?hl=en

Is Storybird available through the State Library?

It is not.

Do you have ideas for great on-line research resources for kids?

Yes! The State Library offers free, credible databases for student research. https://library.sd.gov/LIB/SLC/hmwkElemGrd.aspx for elementary, https://library.sd.gov/LIB/YAS/hmwkMS.aspx for middle school, https://library.sd.gov/LIB/YAS/hmwkHS.aspx for high school.

How do you know if something has an extension ahead of time? I've started using Loom as well. Do you just find extensions by searching the Play store?

Yes, Loom does. Most do to as a way to compete with each other. I'd check either the program website or go to the Chrome Extension Store and see if you can find it there. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/extensions?hl=en

@Joan Do you have guidelines for what your students are putting in the Wakelet portfolio?

I don't necessarily because it all depends on the objective and the subject. This would be something to crowdsource or do some research. Your school counselor might have a good idea of what should be in a career portfolio.

@Joan Did each student locate their own resources and their personal work?

Yes, in that example students locate their own sources based on the prompt and use elink.io to complete the assignment.

Are all these choices for a fee or free?

All that I showed you are free. There are advanced, paid versions too but for the most part, the free versions should be adequate for student use.

How do you organize material in pocket or flipboard?

Most of the time I use an extension and save articles or websites that way. I also go into Pocket and search for reading material and then save it.I then organize it by subject or genre.

? elink.eo - Can the URLs from library databases be linked and will they open, or is it just from website searches that will link?

Yes. I've tried several databases in elink.io and they all linked directly to the article.
