ASSESSMENT & PLAYER PLACEMENT POLICY
At Westcastle International Academy (WIA), our goal is to ensure that every player is placed in an environment that supports their development, fosters a love for the game, and serves the long-term success of both the player and the club.
Player assessments are conducted to evaluate each athlete’s development stage across technical skills, tactical understanding, physical ability, and psychosocial growth. These assessments help us place players in the most appropriate training and competitive environment to maximize enjoyment, confidence, and progress.
In accordance with Canada Soccer’s Grassroots Standards, WIA conducts non-tryout, player-centred assessments for all players U13 and below. Every player is provided the opportunity to participate in a program suited to their individual stage of development.
Following the LTPD model and best practices such as the “ABCD-123” framework, our evaluations consider multiple dimensions of player development, including:
Players are encouraged to demonstrate creativity, problem-solving, and enjoyment throughout the process.
Our assessments are structured in alignment with Canada Soccer’s Grassroots Standards for U13 and below, using age-appropriate and inclusive formats such as 3v3, 5v5, and 7v7 activities.
Sessions emphasize:
Assessments prioritize a positive, low-pressure experience where players can express themselves freely and enjoy the game.
The Technical Director reserves the right to place players where they believe is in the best interest of both the player and the club.
While feedback from players and parents is valued, final placement decisions rest solely with WIA and are not negotiable.
Player placements are not guaranteed for the full season or year. Players may be moved between teams at any time if it is determined that a different environment will better support their growth or meet program needs.
Beginning at U14, players transition into the Competitive Development Stream, which includes placement for BCSPL and other performance environments. Assessments at this stage become more structured and performance-based, while still prioritizing player development and long-term success over short-term results.
Following each assessment period, WIA will provide general information to families outlining the purpose of player placements and how they support long-term development. Individual feedback may be shared where appropriate to help families understand their child’s developmental focus areas.
We ask that all families respect the assessment and placement process and trust that decisions are made with care, consistency, and the player’s long-term growth in mind.
